Cannot shoot panels from top of tower to release ancient relic

* May have finally sussed this. The wee yellow symbol shown in the picture below indicates the ancient relic is locked in the tower and cannot be shot down unless you have an Ancient Key (picked up from interrogating a Guardian Beacon with your datalink scanner) aboard your SRV. The contents of your hold in terms of ancient artefacts (orb, tablet, casket, etc.) then depends which data goodies the ancient obelisks offer up to you. *

Apologies if been asked before, my search of the forums came up blank. Spending what seems like an eternity gathering Guardian components and blue-prints in Horizons, I have difficulty sometimes shooting the towers to release the ancient relics. As per the image, any tower with the wee glowing yellow circular symbol seen above my sights just doesn't allow me to shoot of the panels at the top of the tower to free the ancient relic. Is this part of the gameplay I don't understand (then please do throw whatever advice you have, thanks) or is it a bug? Cheers.

In 3.8 it is no problem, might work in 4.0 too: don't target the thing, shoot the bits and Relic off the tower. Simples. :)

It happens in EDO, are you using 4.0 or 3.8?
3.8 would normally work, in EDO you have the option of whipping out a pistol, alas 4.0 wouldn't have that option.

Thanks for all the replies folks. As said in my OP, I'm playing on Horizons (vers. 4.0) so have no on-foot option and I have tried the non-targeting and just blast the panels method with no joy either (and I've spent the whole 2000 rounds trying!!). First World problem, eh? :) Cheers again.

While I've not done the Guardian sites for ages, I'd say that at least 50% of my attempts ran into some glitch or another. From Pylons being totally unresponsive, through to them seemingly working fine, but not being counted for some reason, through to the final orb not appearing or not able to be scanned. It was a hugely frustrating experience! I did the work to get enough blueprints for every Guardian module, but I actually have enough for just half of them. Really cannot face going back to try again, and haven't in a couple of years at the very least.

It's a real shame that this rather grindy gameplay loop is still so buggy - I feel your frustration!

Your saying above your sights... but your sights are really low in that picture?! In turret mode you should be able to fully aim at the sky about 75 degrees or so upward..... WAYY above the height of that relic. I'm wondering if you have set up your turret only to rotate (yaw) and maybe never set up the pitch??? I was just gathering guardian stuff last week in both SRV's and have done it in both Horizons 3.8 and Odyssey, everything is was working flawlessly... Unless there is a bug in the Horizons 4.0 then I would have to guess you have not set up your controller fully.

Yup indeed, I'm not targeting; I set my sights low just to make a reference point I could refer to in the picture to highlight the wee yellow circle that pops up on the towers I cannot shoot the relic free from. Turret has full range of movement. I've started to notice the same wee yellow circle as I've seen on the relic appear on the ancient obelisks. Maybe I need to scan all obelisks before the game allows me to shoot out the relics from the top of the towers?? Away to try this theory....! Thanks for the reply.

The pic is a bit small... and no, the obelisks (and neither the pylons) will change anything in the way the relics can be shot down.

So - are you on the right side of that pillar? I.e., have you tried to drive around and shoot from another side/angle?

CTRL - Roll Mouse wheel forward sorts out the picture size issue! Thanks for confirming there is not a link between scanning the obelisks and getting access to the relics atop the tower and aye, I have focussed fire from all angles. However, I reckon I may have cracked it from a map of the site I'm currently plundering posted on another forum site that confirms not all relic towers give up their relic so sweet(!). Instead for individual towers, it's what you have in your cargo hold determines whether you can shoot the relic down of not (look in top right of the attached picture for what combination of cargo gives access to both obelisks and relic towers). Thanks to CDR JetsonRing for this brilliant map and stopping me pulling my hair out.

Another option: my DBX's multicannon worked to knock the ancient relic off the tower, even though my SRV's turret failed. (I don't visit guardian beacons, so that wasn't the issue. Also, remember that a Large MC is going to take longer to spin up & fire than the SRV's dual repeaters.)
