Glowing Green Giants - The Definitive List

Oh... :(

Looks like I'm back to square one. Just need to scan 3 million systems and, with a bit of luck, I should find one.

Another new GGG was reported in the Codex in Blaa Hype TF-V d3-144

Not much to write about, but this system has a lot of tubers.

Which spreadheet are these being recorded in now? I have one that claims to be the definitive list but its missing recent ones.

BTW We are posting them to the Canonn Alert server when they are reported by Canonn plugin users or EDDN The in game codex is obviously going to show GGG that haven't been posted to EDDN but you might find the Discord convenient to see them when they have.

I'm happy to announce by the combined efforts of 250 CMDRs and 16 squadrons, we found the missing gas giant!

I found this several months ago, unfortunately I can't remember where it was.
This is the only green gas giant I've ever seen:

GGG 5 Has been found by CMDR @ORANGEORANGE in the At the Eldritch Gate Expedition; here is the thread where he explains what he did. Perhaps this thread had the most traffic in the last six months because of the clue searchers. It also made it to various news outlets and even FDEV promotes.

Just to throw this in here, there has been another Class I GGG found a few months back after the discovery of Kelly's GGG but it seems to have gone unnoticed by some (showed up in Canonn Alerts on 9/24/2022) I took the liberty to get some banger screenshots:

It is fairly close the lost GGG as well:

Idk about y'all but I kinda dig the little green swirls it has overlaying the maroon storms, don't think I've seen one like that before. They're usually boring or have wicked cloud bands.

And as is characteristic for most if not all Class I GGGs, the discolored maroon poles:

Being that this GGG was discovered within the search area for the lost GGG, makes me wonder how many just go right under our noses as we jump by them? We gotta get the GGG count higher!

Aaaaand another one! I'll tell you what, I was beginning to think we were running dry on discovered GGGs this year, thanks for making me think otherwise! This is what, the 5th for 3308? We're falling behind the average, we had 9 new GGGs discovered last year, and 10 the year before that... I guess we gotta get chugging on discovering more within the next two months before 3309 comes around. Anyway, here's the most recent addition to the list, within Hawking's Gap discovered by ToniM47:

Tell you what, not thaaat much of a fan of Green GG2s. None of them so far have been that "flamboyant" in color palette if you know what I mean, but I suppose that's just the nature of how they look in general. Seems that its the gold color that is on standard GG2s that changes to pink, and the dark brown color is what changes to green.

^ Here is where most of the discoloration seems to be, besides a few broad pink patches on the unlit side. But the thing I like most about this planet, are its moons!

Plieliae_SM-C_c29-11_20221108-081626.png

Which it has 3 of. You can see the closest moon in my first photo to the top right of the giant by the rings. It's the last moon in the system that I like most though, it has a high inclination of -67.12°. Haven't noticed any moons around GGGs that have that yet. Only if it had more green!

Looking now, I can't help but notice on my travel map on EDSM that I just skimmed over this GGG on a previous voyage by what looks like 3 jumps :(

The actually definitive GGG list has a timeline of discoveries as well, also noting down how many new systems were uploaded between those days. This year, so far there have been four new GGGs discovered, and the one lost GGG's location found. (Since that wasn't a new one, I didn't include it there.) The pattern seems to be interesting though: generally, a new GGG is discovered after a median of one million new systems uploaded, and an average of 1.25 million. Consider that EDSM uploads tend to make up a bit over 40% of the total new discovereds, and you end up with one new GGG somewhere around 2-2.5 million systems. Now, days might have slowed down for a simple reason: exploration activity has slowed down markedly. If people discovered half as many new systems per day, it'll take twice as long to find a new GGG.

There have always been some outliers though, when no GGGs were found for a long while: in these cases, it might have simply been that a freshly-discovered GGG was not added to the Codex because of the well-known Codex bugs, and went unreported anywhere. So far, the current record for "longest time without a GGG" is 4.23 million systems uploaded, over 125 days: since these days it's around 15,000 new systems uploaded per day, that same amount would have been over 282 days.

Keep them coming everyone!!! It's only been FIVE DAYS and we have another green class I gas giant to gander at. When I got into the game to see where it was, it was only 800 LY away! How convenient. And this time it isn't that boring! I was happy to see some color in the FSS:

Plaa_Ain_YH-G_b13-0_20221110-095832.png

It gives me those festive vibes. It's a like a candy cane! with a hint of green apple.

This planet also has 6 icy moons, one of them is orbiting kinda close to the rings.

This planet is just an hour's hop north of the NGC 6357 nebula. Worth visiting? Yeah, i'd say so. The rings have hotspots for tritium, void opals and low temp diamonds. I'll see you guys hopefully sometime soon for the next new GGG post :)

Huh, I quite like this one. Looks a lot like GGG #18 "Neon Beacon".

Makes me very happy that this search is ongoing, and this thread is still active.

I'm currently in the Perseus Arm in my little Diamondback, and my one big goal in this game is to track down one of these.

Looking at the spreadsheet, there doesn't seem to be much of a pattern to them, but does anyone have any semblance of an idea of a pattern to better track them down? Or is it really just luck of the draw?

The thread and spreadsheet here are no longer updated, though people still post here. If you're looking for the data that's up-to-date and more detailed, see the link in the newer thread.
That said, while we're at 46 green gas giants, that's still nowhere near enough to draw any lasting conclusions. We likely never will.

If you go to the Galactic Centre or Ryker's Hope regions, green gas giants are easier to spot there, as they generate Notable Stellar Phenomena in those two regions: K-10 type Anomalies. This just makes the GGGs quicker to spot though (no need to scan all the gas giants in the system to know if any are green), it doesn't mean there are more there.

o7 Cmdrs.
I was informed to ask you about this.
During expedition I have discovered these green glowing planets.
I know these aren't GGGs.
So i am asking for an explanation.
I already opened a thread.

A lighting bug currently known only to affect T Tauri and Herbig stars. At the moment we know of 4 different temperatures that cause this phenomenon, but why exactly it occurs? No idea
