Greetings Commanders,

For the past few years we have been using the https://community.elitedangerous.com/ to mirror and archive all GalNet articles. We wanted to take this time to let you know that we're preparing to close this site and redirect traffic to our main site over at https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/galnet. This is due to technical reasons preventing ongoing support as well as a desire to modernise our presence on the web.

While we don't have a specific time frame for this just yet, we'll also let you know closer to the event. We hope that letting you know this in advance will allow time to prepare any pages or tools of your own that link to the former.

While we wind down the old site, we'll also investigate adding functions to the new version. These will include easier ways to search for older articles and offering easier ways to link pages to your own sites and tools in the way the previous version did.

We hope this helps!

Excellent! If there will be some kind of archive like we have now on the old site everything should be fine.

Thanks Bruce.

This is good to hear. Admittedly figuring out the new site's API wasn't hard but an officially documented method would be nice. And adding all of the old articles to the new site would be great as well.

Agreed an Archive would be lovely. even more lovely would be some kinda re-directs from the old article to the new ones... but I know how hard that would be... One thing I'd critically ask though is to PLEASE not just remove old articles because they're not on the new site, please migrate them over

I would suggest that, whenever new articles aren't going to be posted to the old site any more, you put one "we're moving" article in there, so anyone who is only consuming the RSS feed https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet-rss actually knows the change is happening. Or maybe just redirect that specific URL to the new RSS feed URL.

Talking of which, can you please confirm an official, supported (as in works, is intended to work, and there would be an announcement about that changing) RSS feed URL for the new galnet home ? I've picked up https://www.elitedangerous.com/en-GB/rss/galnet.xml as working well at this point in time.

Thanks for the heads up Bruce. The new site really does look a lot better than the old one, but just to echo the comments made by others.

The most important thing is that all pages are migrated to the new site, we don't want to lose anything.
A search function is the second most important thing, as currently it is very hard to find anything on the new site.
And making sure the RSS feed continues to work is the third :)

Hear, hear. Also that search function should allow users to specity from- and to-dates.

I appreciate the modern main site for recent articles and understand the desire to move. Personally, I have been using the RSS feed from the new site already anyway. That said, it would be nice if the redirect will not just be a flat redirect to the main hub on the entire subdomain as it was yesterday but rather keep old data alive. As of now, sites like the ED wiki use a ton of links to community.elitedangerous.com as citations for lore. All of these break and so did googling for specific old articles.

It would be nice if there is a way for sites like the wiki to migrate or maintain links to historical articles. This could be done by either providing a way to view all of them on the new site (redirect even?) or by making the old site an "archived version" that will still be accessible but not updated and added to anymore.

Update/Edit: Just checked and it appears that the new GalNet site only supports going back until Dec 7 2020 (a total of 514 articles right now), so several years of articles would need data migration if the old site doesn't stay as an archive.

If the articles are not available by Frontier sources. Retcon claims will go through the roof. And a good deal of the meta, a huge attraction of the game to alot of veteran players will no longer be trusted. This is a big deal...
Mass 1nhibited raises an excellent point. If Frontier servers are not the system of record for galnet news articles, then, whilst I don't think that anyone would actively go around retconning articles the potential is there. This is why @DrinkyBird's et al's excellent site can't be anything more than a convenience if people are going to argue lore (and we'd NEVER see that happening!!!) :)

You know, this is just a ridiculous situation. What is wrong with keeping the calendar/text system going as well. It isn't exactly resource-hungry, whereas the new "picture book" system must be. I get fed up with people coming along and deciding to change things for appearances or because they just did a MBA or a creative design course. (The BBC News website people are doing it too, removing links in their news articles.)

Keep our calendar Galnet archive - you know it makes sense.

(Now - time to get those kids off my lawn... grump, grumble...)
