Retiring community.elitedangerous.com

Update/Edit: Just checked and it appears that the new GalNet site only supports going back until Dec 7 2020 (a total of 514 articles right now), so several years of articles would need data migration if the old site doesn't stay as an archive.
Indeed and this really worries me... We've alread "lost" the articles that were published back in 3300.. We have things maintained in https://elite-dangerous.fandom.com/wiki/GalNet but as covered this can't be relied upon... Heck it doesn't contain any articles since April! The (old) official site starts at the 6th of Jan 3301... https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/06-JAN-3301

Hi,
this information is understandable, but just closed access to the site Galnet News.
For years, I have collected and categorized all the Galnet news in English and French.
I would be sad not to be able to propose to the community https://news.galnet.fr/galnet-news/
For information, this site offers all the news, sometimes exclusively in English and sometimes in French, since the beta of Elite in 2014.

I will try to find a solution.

When I was searching for older articles recently (because reasons, but that's another story) I did find it odd that there were effectively two Galnet websites. It makes sense to have just the one now. However, it makes even more sense to make sure the oldest Galnet articles (from 2014 and thereabouts) remain accessible and are preserved.

Looking back at what has been retrieved from the earliest days, I see that nothing of importance happened on 1st December 3300, for example... 🤔

Thanks for the clarification.

Hunting down and updating all the links will be quite an effort and I'm sure we will be finding dead links for a long time.
It is possible though I appreciate not straightforward to have redirects take you to the equivalent page on the new site.

Failing that if you could keep the old site available for historic articles that would be appreciated

What would we want to see on a the new site?

A search function would be brilliant. Then it would be possible to search for winking cats or individuals easilly.

I rather liked the old calendar but perhaps if we are still here in 10 years time it will take up a lot of space. How about putting the galnet articles on the community events calendar on the days they occurred?

Of course as others have said we need to have all the articles on the new site.

In addition to the missing articles, the change in URL structure worries me.

All links that points to the old site will die with the site. Many forum posts, youtube video descriptions, twitter tweets, and various articles written by the community contain the links to the old site for refference. But those links will be meaningless the minute you kill the site.

Auto-redirect feture from old URL to the new will be prefferable. But I'm guessing thats out of question when old articles are missing.

If they at least have the same URL structure like this:

Old - https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/63760a3faf7b7c38e46d2ef4
New - https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/galnet/uid/63760a3faf7b7c38e46d2ef4

thre's still hope that people can find and replace so the link points to the new URL, but it doesn't
The new site have a completely new URL structre like this:

Old - https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/63760a3faf7b7c38e46d2ef4
New - https://www.elitedangerous.com/news/galnet/coming-taranis

and thre's no way we can renew the links with this kind of change.

Not that I don't agree with you, just a FYI: there are at least two other archives online.

Of course, it's too bad that there will be a move, because a lot of the articles on the wiki will have to be corrected and the links in them corrected.

I support the proposal to make a search and more convenient navigation to find the necessary news, both by title and by date. Also, need access to all old articles from 2014 onwards. Ideally it would be to make access also to news localizations, including old news.
