Differences between Horizons and Odyssey?

In Horizons you can buy a PC for 64 million credits (and change).
Just for completeness, everyone else can't. I've logged into Horizons live, only difference is of course that I got the EA Panther for ARX - but that shouldn't make it more expensive.

I bought the PC for ARX. But the price I saw at Jameson wasn't for the PC. I'm not sure what I was looking at TBH. Senior Moment? Apparently.

The cost of the PC at Jameson is showing 264 million (and change) now. Again, not sure what I was looking at, but I screwed up. Apologies to all.

(I think I need some more coffee....)

Don't worry, we all have those moments 😁. 264 million sounds about right after discounts. And yes, if you buy the early access for ARX, the ships will be available in the shipyard in Horizons Live - in fact, buying them for ARX is the only way to get them in Horizons live even after the early access phase has ended.

Good thing you cleared that up, I got worried there for a moment :D.

Sorry 'bout that. These 'senior moments' are becoming more frequent and more annoying to me (and others) the older I get.

If you are correct, then I'm going to try something: I'll load up Horizons and see if I can get the new little ship (Cobra V?) for credits, as I've not bought that ship in Oddity.

Edit: OK, loaded Horizons and went to the ship store at Jameson. It shows the Cobra Mk V for sale for 1.6M credits. Not sure what that means, but there it is.

Again, I have never purchased that ship in either Oddity or Horizons. 🤷‍♂️

I can confirm that a Horizons-only CMDR will NOT see the new ships (already out of EA) purchasable. Of course a CMDR having bought Odyssey may see them purchasable even if using Horizons mode. What a Horizons-only CMDR can do though, is buying-in to one (or multiple) of them without owning Odyssey, which would be a financially questionable move, but nevertheless applaudable for the game support aspect of it.

That's probably because you own Odyssey, and the V is out of early access. If I am not mistaken the clients for Odyssey and Horizons are the same, the latter just disables some features - but your "live" account does have access to the new ships through your Odyssey ownership.

Very questionable move as a single ship basically costs the same as Odyssey.

If I have zero interest in walking around and/or shooting at bipedal NPCs, is there any benefit for me to play Odyssey vs. Horizons? (honest question, not throwing lawn darts)
I would say yes you get all the stuff even if you choose not to participate it will become the baseline game eventually as did horizons.
I haven't don't on foot apart from two bacteria and the first mission . I don't have any interest on the on foot but it may be something later on if I get bored ?

What 'motivation'?

The game was released, I bought it, watched the demo crash and crash (eventually CTD'd). Never was interested in legs as I have that in another space game and wasn't that thrilled with it TBH.

Eventually the game ran without crashing. I wanted the new graphics and planets. Until I didn't. Visited a few dead rocks with thin atmospheres. Not impressed, but that's just me. Not interested in settlements as they (and the stuff they have) are Oddity related.

I don't play Open, so gankers are a non-issue for me. I'm not interested in the current play-style offerings in Oddity, but that may someday change. Maybe.
I still don't get it. Nothing of what you write there explains why you stick with Horizons mode rather than launching in Odyssey mode. What exactly are you getting from the Horizons mode? What's the advantage? What do you get from there that you are not getting from Odyssey? The two modes are literally identical, other than some stuff being inaccessible in Horizons. It's not like in Horizons you are getting something (practical or cosmetic) that you don't get in Odyssey. In my experience Horizons doesn't even run faster than Odyssey (because they are the one and same game.)

Well, I suppose I'll just have to settle with not understanding.

I'm puzzled too... Page 1 discussion gave me the impression the OP wanted to know the differences to decide whether to buy Odyssey. But then on pg 2 they mention they already have Odyssey... Ok so I guess there's still some curiosity about the differences, that's cool, but yeah if you already have Odyssey I dunno why load Horizons instead.

(Caveat: it's my vague understanding ppl sometimes run Horizons for alt accounts, but that doesn't seem to apply here.)

The only actually legitimate reason to launch in Horizons mode that I can think of is if you want to team up with someone who does not have Odyssey.

(The two modes don't instance with each other. In other words, someone in Horizons mode cannot instance with someone in Odyssey mode, even when both are in open or the same PG. Both players need to be in the same mode.)

I know no one wants to do the maths, and of course I'm aware everyone's financial circumstances are different but I've just jumped back in to the game myself, and before I did I picked up the Horizons expansion for £10 on Steam. £10 or three cups of coffee or two pints down the pub if you're lucky.

Since joining the Kickstarter back in 2016, I've only put in a measly 500 hours into Elite I reckon, and I think at the time I paid £50? I also bought Horizons I think that was another £20. So 7000 pence divided by 30000 minutes is 23 pence per minute of gameplay. That's not accounting for the 9 years Frontier have spent keeping the game running, store my data, admin, support, servers and rack space, inflation, other costs etc... That 23 pence is probably stretched even more.

I figured, throwing Frontier a tenner to keep the lights running for a few minutes longer wasn't going to ruin my day and I found out that I quite enjoy just chilling on station concourses watching ships go in and out the stations. I actually quite enjoy the variety of little surface stations and dwellings to go visit and meet people. It's alright.
