1% Away from Elite Combat Rank. Help needed

Hi Chaps,


I've been playing Elite for quite some time but never bothered grinding for any kind of rank. One of my goals with Elite is / was to 'complete' it through casual fun play using only a keyboard (no mouse) from day one, and no add-ons of any kind. No use of fast ranking or exploits to help my rank or credit progress. A black and white HUD is the only tweak I've made to the game apart from a few of the keys on the classic keyboard template. Well, I've hit Deadly 99% and I'm it's time to get my wings in a trusty old school Cobra MKIII over the next few days.

This is the load out I'm thinking of using.


Any suggestion on how I could modify it to either improve it or make it more old school? Missiles, ECM?

I think I will head to somewhere like Isinor, Lave or Zaonce.

Again an suggestions to make it more memorable for an old Elite player would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing I would suggest would be to go for a 4A SCB, as the recharge is stronger, and since you only have 4 heat syncs, the 5th charge in the 4B could do more harm than good. It will still just fit in with your power capabilities, and will give you a tiny bit more jump range.

My Cobra is equipped with fixed medium pulse lasers and 2 missile batteries. If missiles would be already a bit more like they have to be, it would be perfect already.

Decent build. If you can find a Compromised Nav Beacon, you should be able to make quick work of the elite ranked eagles there. I'm sure it'll be fun to make elite in the ship that represents it all in a place of lore. Good hunting Commander.

My only suggestion would be Riedquat. Lave and Zaonce were fine, but Riedquat was anarchy and swarming with enemies. My first "there be dragons" system back in '84.

Where do you cash in the bounties from Isinor? I've got one on my list I can't get rid of, Isinor although it has a population of a few million has no stations and as far as I can tell no docks on airless planets (not that I have Horizons anyway). It's not a lot but I'd like to clear it.
Strangely Isinor has a terraformed planet without an orbiting station, not seen that anywhere else, perhaps it was stolen.

Also well done on slogging through with just a keyboard.

No stations of any kind in Isinor. Doing my first stop at a station now. Hull down to 50% no chaff or cells left. Fortunately I started with forty basic ammo refills in my synthesis stock so didnt need to keep going back for refills. I'm headed to Dyson orbital in Ngoma. I think that's weer I got my permit from so hopefully can hand in bonds to the chapter there.

hey ben,

i'm running a medium beam for stripping shields, and a medium mc after shields are down,

with a small cannonn for medium/larger targets (cannons only suffer size penalty one class higher)

and a turetted burst (because the small cobra hp arent't on target often).

i personally fly lightweight ships, and the cobra is great for getting distance till shields are back... so chaff, no bulkheads, eventually bi-weave, and a class 2 scb only for keeping the shields up in case.

with a lightweight setup and the low speed without boost, the cobra is a good dogfighter.

the 3A powerdistributor can run a medium beam alone for a very long time.

anyway, fly safe and enjoy!

Thanks. Id forgotten how nippy the cobra really is. Ive been able to zip out of combat when shield shave gone down and recharge very quickly. Fantastic.


Just about to jump in for round two in Isinor. Still no idea where I can hand in combat bonds.

Brillaint! Just in time. I'm on the last multi cannon reload out of the 40 units of basic ammo I could synth from materials which has saved me 20 ammo restock runs to another system. Im on about 7m in combat bonds and need to cash them in and swap out the multi cannons for something else.

Sounds like fun Ben! Sounds like has been a good play style and being in casual form wouldnt have often suffered the dreaded CBF'ed starting the game lol.

One question, have you a pic of your B&W Hud? Also the number matrix to enter if possible.

Yup still at it :D Excellent loadout! I'll give it a spin. I'll take out one of the shield boosters and rebind M for missile and E for ECM. Right on Commander!
