10 Things that Planet Zoo is doing wrong, that could be easily fixed.

In this post, i am going to talk about gameplay mechanigs that Frontier implemented in Planet Zoo that just don't make any sense to me. I won't be talking about adding something in the game. All of these points, except for number 3, shouldn't take to much time to fix and could improve the gameplay by a lot.
Let's start.

1. Path Size (High priority)
In the game, the minimum path size is currently 4 meters. Making smaller paths would be incredible easy for them, and i just don't get why they didn't add 1m, 1.5m, 2m ... as a path size. This makes rebuilding some existing zoos in the game a lot difficult, and also restricts the gameplay, for absolutely no reason.

2. Deep Diving Need (Medium Priority)
To make your animals dive, you need a lot of underwater space, and it also needs to be 4 meters deep so that they actually dive. This is really annoying, especially because of the spectacled caiman, the african penguin and the giant otter. The required depth should be 1.5m or even lower, but definetly not 4 meters. This makes building realistic habitats for some animals nearly impossible, and except for maybe some aquariums i have never seen and african penguin enclosure that had 4 meter deep water.

3. Animal's walking areas are too restricted (Medium Priority)
The problem with some animals is that you place them in their habitat, and they can't reach half of the space. For example, snow leopards, which are really good climbers, can't cross a f*cking log. Or a capuchin monkey can't just climb over it, but has to walk about 2 meters around it just to reach another part of the habitat. This is due the way to big hitboxes for scenery boxes and animals. I think this would probably be impossible by now, because all hitboxes would need a change, but it should have already happened at the beginning of the game.

4. Protestors (Low Priority)
Protestors are one of the most annoying an useless things in the game. They are literally walking around your zoo and shouting around, because the TeMpArAtUrE oF yOuR gOliAtH bEeTlE doesn't feel right, or yOuR aArDvAaRk, which is in a 700m² habitat, iS tOo StReSsEd. I think this useless feature should be removed in all game modes.

5. Limited climbing (Medium priority)
In the game, a lot of animals can't climb, even though they do it often in real life. For an example, the nile monitor is a really good climber, but can't even walk up a 10cm stone. Planet Zoo has a good climbing system, however many things are wrong with it, some trees aren't climbable for any animals, like why can't a monkey climb up a oak tree. Also' there aren't any animals that can climb up rocks. At least dall sheeps and snow leopards should be able to climb steep rock hangs.

6. Buildings, useless Warnings and Habitat Gates in Sandbox Mode (Low Priority)
In Sandbox Mode, all you want to do is build a nice zoo. So it is very annoying to have to get a staff, build a staff room, have the staff running 2 km only to place a animal in a habitat, which wouldn't be possible without a habitat gate. I think that you should just be able to drag your animal into your habitat in sandbox mode. Habitat gates are also annoying to place, since they require a flat terrain in a radius of around 3 meters around them, for whatever reason. A huge problem for me are also annoying useless warnings in sandbox. Some examples:
1. Your keeper can't access your habitat
2. Your animal is starving / severly dehydrated
3. You need to build a vet / research centre
Why can't you just turn this annoying stuff of if you don't want it.

7. Not being able to edit terrain next to water, barriers and paths. (Very high Priority)
This is the most annoying thing ever in planet zoo, and has 0 reasons for being in the game. You always have to remove all paths or barriers around some terrain to edit it, which is time consuming and useless, because you can place them at the exact same place afterwards. I spend around half an hour building a habitat, and 1 hour removing paths and barriers only to edit the terrain slightly. This is just huge bullsh*t.

8. Feeder and water bottle placements (Low priority)
Can someone please tell me why my feeder can float 10 meters in the air, but can't be placed 2 meters away from a barrier. Why can't any f*cking thing be placed nex to barriers in this game. Sucks.

9. Useless features (Very Low Priority)

Useless features:
1. Animal talks, literally just a dude standing there doing nothing
2. Zookeepers shouting random bullsh*t that doesn't make sense when they enter a habitat
3. Some Guest thought, like "The temperature for the goliath beetle seems to be to low", like how the f*ck can you tell this
4. Okapi and Anteater being walkthrough animals, okapis are very shy and anteaters are dangerous, there isn't a single zoo which has a walkthrough of them in the world

10. Arboreal animals problems (Medium priority)
Some animals, that spend most of their life in trees, climb very rarely. For example, i build a lemur house with about 30 red ruffed lemurs, 2 of them climb at one time, the rest stays at the ground. The same is for basically any monkey, the clouded leopard, binturong, red panda .... If these animals literally live in trees, why do the spend 90% of their time on the ground. Doesn't make sense, and never will.

I would love to hear your opinion on this points, and if you agree or disagree with them.
Thanks for reading!

Unrealistic animations should be removed, because the animals don't do it. This includes:
1. Cassowarys random jumping
2. Ring tailed lemurs mediatating
3. Sun bears deep diving, they can't even do it
I can assure you that they can. Frontier always ask real zoos about animal behaviors. Since they got confirmation that something like that is possible, they added it to the game.
Also u have fallen into lemur trap.

Eh, I do agree with a lot of stuff in here, except for the removal of things. Animations are good, as lemurs, cassowaries, and sun bears do the things that you listed, Animal Talks are good for Education ingame, as well as an alternative way for feeding animals. Everything else though is agreeable in my book. Navmeshes can easily be changed as modders have found out, and we know that Deep Diving works in less than 4m but Frontier won't fix that. I feel like Deep Diving still is necessary to be fixed, especially for the otter.

Ring tailed lemurs mediatating
Have you ever seen a ring-tailed lemur? This is one of their most famous behaviours.

I would certainly like a smaller path width for staff members.
My beef with the protesters is mainly that they arrive way too fast, a lot of time before I had a chance to address the particular animal abuse I must have done.
I have trouble with the underwater feeder and the dwarf caimans. The minimum depth is too deep, the caimans don't dive very much and the fish just vanish into the water before they seem to be seeing then (the caimans)
I love the rendition of the animals in this game, so to me, they are no "useless animations or features" I want more of them, actually. As long as they are realistic and have been observed.

Sorry, but as others have stated, all of these things are occuring in real life (not sure about how commonly sun bear dive, but a quick research told me they are indeed able to dive)..

Please make a research on the internet before claiming there is something unrealistic about the animals, I know that some things about animals seems "weird" or "out of place" but the animators of the animals do alot of research, they dont just randomly think "You know what would be cool? If this dog had a yoga animation!". There might be some minor inaccuracies in design or technical limitations on the animals, but in case of the animal behaviour, the devs do not add behaviours that the animals dont display.

I know the only bear that dives consistently in captivity and the wild is the polar bear. Grizzlies are fully capable and willing if there’s food in it for them but prefer to just stick their head in. Formosan black bears and sun bears don’t regularly dive and are even less willing then the other two by far but their definitely capable if there’s motivation behind it. I’m still glad there capable in game. Maybe if there was a way to limit it with the bears besides the polar bear but really it’s not that big of a deal. I think PZ has some minor problems but a lot of these to me aren’t it. Even with the minor problems the game is still amazing tho.

I believe the not being able to put enrichment close to barriers is to try to prevent so many issues with animals escaping through them - if they do an animation through the barrier that seemed to cause a lot of the issues in the first 6 months or so of the game being out. I don't think with the way the animation system works this is something they are likely to change or 'fix' as it feels like a key mechanic.

Similarly the habitat gate thing seems like a bit of a stretch to get annoyed at the few minutes you have to wait for your animal to be transported. It's clear the habitat gate is what the game uses to register the barrier as an enclosure - I imagine that otherwise we would not be able to use the barriers for non habitats which is something I find useful. An better fix for sandbox realism builders might be a null habitat gate or some more variety in the gates.

Similarly the hitbox thing is something where I imagine they are trying to walk the line between pleasing detailed builders and casual players - animal escapes is an issue and they originally increased hitboxes to try to reduce that. I'm not saying they have got the balance right but I feel like most of your points make some huge assumptions about why they have made certain choices.

You should feel free to suggest changes but them not doing it may be for very good reasons and the tone of your post is a bit condescending e.g. "there is 0 reason for doing it". Clearly there is a reason why it is built that way and the mechanics of the game work that way. If there was a straightforward way to make the pathing and terrain editing work better near water they would have done it already and in fact there has been community manager comments on a number of threads trying to explain some of the complications to improving pathing at least.

The 1m paths is another example where I think there are some obvious potential reasons for them not to have it - the guest groups navigation mean they would get stuck which causes major lag and performance issues. I know many sandbox players play with guests off but that is only one game mode and not the main way the game was designed to be played. There's an easy exploit by using queues to get smaller paths for those who want to - frankly I'm not sure Frontier should change the system just to cater to realism especially as then less experienced players would use the paths thinking they were suitable for guests and then the complaints about performance would go up.

I agree with point 3. It's a bit too restricted.

How do you know it could be easily fixed ? Are you a programmer working with the Cobra Engine ?
Yes, I am basically a programmer, I don`t know anything about Cobra Engine, but Frontier has professionals working, and I am pretty sure that these people can easily do most stuff that I mentioned
