My biggest reason why I think one of my captains will be Empire aligned is that they have style, without being fanatically evil. They have bunch of issues, but that's not as far as "we will destroy planet" kind of.

My point still stands. The Empire, the Federation, the Alliance. Just names. Labels which bring to a mind an idea, shared among many, of a semblance of security and civility. But that is all it is- an idea, a thin veneer of self-deception that allows life to carry on regardless. Yet all it takes is one little Barbarian invasion and it will all fall apart like a house of dog-eared playing cards.
Just think how teeny tiny these great empires are in comparison to the rest of the galaxy. How fragile and faint their small flicker of light is, deep in the vast ocean of darkness. For every good citizen, there is a hundred dread things waiting to tear him limb from limb.
Why bother with these inferior societies? Join the only one that will survive- Anarchy. Be your own pilot. Don't let these trinkets of gold deceive you. They are but shiny metal not even useful for armor. Think of the glory and fame in becoming the greatest survivor of all time. Immortality is the only way to live!
