1080 ti Upgrade

So as I have been waiting for my CV1 to arrived, and looks like it will be a couple of weeks yet anyhow, it got me thinking about graphics cards.

I have pretty much decided to upgrade my 970 to a shiny shiny 1080ti as from all the threads and boards my 970 will be at its limit and I totally want a nice experience with VR. I have a DK2 at the moment and get 37fps in stations and anything between 60-75 out and about. Most of my settings are quite low and I have tinkered with settings for the last month to get the best experience (Thanks you guys for all the hints and tips on this)

So my question is :- There are loads of 1080ti cards out there all with different configurations and manufacturers. Which ones should I be looking for and what should I avoid ?? There are also a big differences in price, anything from £620 to £900ish from what I can see.

Any advice from 1080ti users or the tech guys who know about this kind of thing would be most appreciated.

From what i see on the benchmarks, the stupidly expensive cards only push out a few more FPS. Not too sure if its worth the extra cash.

To be fair, I thought everything worked pretty well with my GTX 970. I only upgraded because I had thought it died on me (turns out it was an unrelated problem). now I use a 1070.

The differences have only come down to how far I can push the HMD quality, etc. I ran the 970 with ED's "VR Medium" settings, and then went to "VR Ultra" with the 1070. The 970 will do fine as long as you don't mind using more moderate settings.

Current benchmarks are all showing performance pretty equal across brands. The coolers and casing is where price difference is mainly found. The GPUs are all the same, some cards are slightly overclocked. ASUS an EVGA have a good reputation. Everyone's going to have their favorite.

Just find a good deal and look at review sites like Arstechna

I just upgraded to an EVGA overclocked icX cooler 1080Ti from a gtx980 myself...now to explore settings!

I personally swear by EVGA and that is because their customer support is excellent. e.g., when my 980Ti died in warranty this year, they sent me a new 1080 FTW because the 980Ti was no longer available. The 1080 is about 30% quicker than the 980Ti, so a nice free upgrade. They turned this around in a week, and I am a UK customer.

I upgraded from GTX970 to a 1080ti and it was like entering a new world in VR... Almost max 90 fps with settings maxed (at Supersampling 1.5). There are a few situation, where it drops a few frames, but overall the performance and the image quality, the 1080ti delivers in VR is awesome. Worth every cent!

Here a direct comparison from my system, using a GTX970 and GTX1080ti...

I bought the founders edition, that came directly from Nvidia. My GTX970 was an MSI Gaming edition, which ran pretty decent. If i had to buy another 1080ti, i would most likely take the MSI version.

Yeah my 1080 is a founders. It clocks to ~2100 with a custom fan curve (Pascal throttles 1080s at 82c so you need to blast it and keep it cool) and maintains it which is pretty good for a 1080.

Why not a 1070? From what I read the 1070 is a nice step up coming from a 970, but the gap between the 1070 and 1080 isn't all that big. Not worth the extra money imho.

I'm starting to look lustfully at the 1080Ti, too, but my main criterion will be noise output, not FPS output.

It's my work puter (I work at home), and I'm obsessive about puter noise. This is what I have currently, and the 970 was chosen specifically for quietness.

If I get a 1080Ti it needs to be as near silent as possible when not gaming, so any suggestions would be appreciated.

I can´t hear the GPU when wearing the HMD. No disturbance there. And as long as you don´t kick it to the edge,
it operates between completely silent and almost not noticeable. At least i can say that for the founders edition.

also check gamersnexus.net. solid testing and independent. I went for the MSI Gaming X as it was the best price at that time and available. Also very quiet. Asus Strix is very nice as well. Do NOT buy the MSI Armor. This card is only good if you put custom cooling on it.

I went from a 980ti to a 1080ti and the ability to push super sampling makes worlds of difference in image quality. The 1080ti is a beast runs at 90fps 99% of the time and gives a great quality image in the HMD. 1.5 SS in Steam 1.0 SS in Elite and 1.0 HMD quality most settings high or ultra gives eyegasmic VR quality at 90fps 99% of the time. For some reason the Steam SS really helps I think it applies it at a different place in the graphical pipeline than the Elite ingame SS. With the Steam SS at 1.5 it really smooths all the text in the huds.

I can't speak to all brands beyond that my research shows they are all fairly close in performance. I have had a MSI GTX 980 Gaming for quite a while and was pleased enough that I bought the MS! 1080ti Gaming X. It has 3 modes-Silent, Gaming and OC(factory). Check your space and card length if your case is tight. The 1080ti is a sweet piece of tech and I would think all major brands are fine. The triple fan cards will OC even higher but with this power and the cost I choose to settle for the factory ,for now anyway.

I have the Evga SC2 1080 ti and it turns the fans off under 50c so it's dead silent at idle.

I run an asus strix gtx1080ti on a reelatively modest i7-4770k +16gb ram, like others in this thread, I'm neurotic about noise, so I have a pair of bitfenix fans acting as inlets, one 200mm & one 230mm and one 140mm fan acting as exhaust. When running speedfan the computer is silent; the loudest thing in my office is the fridge in the kitchen which is the next room along. Although it goes without saying that when gaming there is some increase in noise, but not enough that you can hear it when playing the games in VR, even playing on screen, the reduced load is enough to keep the computer inaudible against the games at moderate volume on speakers. The performance is as astounding as the silent operation, so I'd thoroughly rerecommend the asus strix 1080ti.

Ouch, that makes me think there is something seriously wrong with my system...:

ETA:

Ouch, didn't know you now have to have a paid account to post pics from photobucket. Anyway pics were a very poor score of around 3000. Similar set up, expect your RAM was 1800 vs my 1600.

When reading this thread I am a little confused as of why I can run ED in ultra with VR with a simple 1060 GTX without noticing frame rate issues?
Even my CPU is still an old I5 2500K...

If you are using a Rift then likely due to ASW - Although you might not notice the frame dips as ASW does a great job at masking them you will see other tell tale signs that its on, such as UI distortion. You can check your actual frame rate by pressing CTRL+F in game - your frame rate would then be displayed in the desktop mirror window. If your frame rate shows 45FPS then ASW is doing its magic. You may notice it jump back to 90 in deep space and such.

Not only do many of us play with high settings but we're also supersampling in order to obtain a clearer image quality and less jaggies.

Well those old 2500/2600K chips are very good, especially if you overclock. Your card isn't bad either. I could run ED on Ultra with a 2600K (4.9ghz) & 1070, the only issue is you cant crank up SS. I went for a 1080TI and high end CPU, no need to worry about SS, running multiple apps/streaming etc.
