11 Q's from SC Backer (noob questions)

I was thinking of investing $45 (I think that is 25 pounds) in ED, and wanted your thoughts.

EDIT : Actually, deciding to go towards the kickstarter special!!

Can you help me out with a few questions?

1. Is there any benefit in becoming an original backer, do you think?
2. Is the pricing of buying in going to increase?
3. What's your take on it compared to SC? (I'm very much interested in 1st Person Dogfighting and have good gear for it). (SC backers perspective would be wonderful!)
4. Do you think the organisation is sound? (The right people at the top / dev's?)
5. Will people still be buying in after the Dec 3 deadline? What will that look like?
6. What is customer service like?
7. Does it make sense to back SC and ED?
8. Any Video's or forum posts that should be my first stop?
9. What excites you guys the most about ED?
10. I loathed some things about STO. I hated the greedy, stinking, money grabbing systems in place to suck ever increasing money out of you. Specifically, Character restricted items, money capping unless you pay MORE, and DROP BOXES. I swear if I see a dropbox I'll have a fit. Is there any link to the dev's thinking on whether subscriptions will be stayed away from, their philosophy on looking after the fanbase and not to leech the game for all its worth after it is developed? Is there a sense of fairness and loyalty to the fanbase in what you have experienced so far?
11. How is PVP being implemented? Is there space for a mainly PVE player?

I'll do my best to answer but others may chip in to dig me out if I go wrong! In your order:

1. Yes in short you are helping to bring a classic game from the 1980s bang up to date, plus as backers you get some special goodies depending on how much you throw into the fray
2. Not sure what you mean - do you mean the price for the game once it hits the retail shops? No price has been confirmed but one of the backing tiers will give you this game, plus all future expansions included, great value
3. Elite set the standard for space combat in the 1980s and all the dev videos to date (including Dev. Update no. 8 this week) showed great dogfighting for this version. Recommend you visit the Frontier E D webpage to catch up on all the Dev videos
4. In a word, yes. CEO just won an award from his peers for his work and as Tech Personalty of the Year !
5. I imagine so. Pledges have kept coming in well after the Kickstater campaign ended
6. Personally I have found it great, fast and helpful. I cannot comment how others have found it
7. If you enjoy Space based games, why not. Both games have their own take on the genre and I for one will be playing both
8. http://elite.frontier.co.uk/ is a good place to start as are these forums
9. I played Elite back in the 1980s and every version since. This game has been 20 years in the offing frankly but at long last the tech, vision, player support and love is there to bring it to life and create a genuine gaming classic for our time-phew!
10. No subscriptions for the game once you purchase. I believe some microtransactions are on the cards but nothing game changing.
11. Game will facilitate Single Player Offline/Online, Multiplayer and Ironman modes. Suggest you check out some of the Dev Diaries which go through all this.

Hope I have answered some of your questions well enough. The forum folks here are a friendly bunch so I imagine you will get more detail shortly. Good luck and welcome to the forums!

1,2,4 yes
3 no idea
5 they will be changing the backers app. look for the dev diarys (#8 i think)
6 not needed them
7 personal chiose
8 the dev diaries will be a good start , they include some vids
9 david brabem , sheer genius
10 dont think you will see drop boxes or subscriptions here. i think they will be opening a 'vanity' shop (fluffy dice , maybe custom paint job etc) but DB is not in favour of P2W.
11. there are a few ways to play and you can change between most (the exeption being solo off-line). first choise is ironman(death=game over) / normal. then there is the choise of all-in(PvP/PvE)/private group(you and a few friends PvP/PvE)/solo-online(PvE including develepments withing the online galaxy)/solo-offline(PvE but you are the only influance on the galaxy)

hope that made sence

1. Is there any benefit in becoming an original backer, do you think?

Not a massive benefit at that level. Someone might be able to correct me, but I think the decal you get lets you into the founder's system or something...

2. Is the pricing of buying in going to increase?
I would expect so. It will very likely be priced at standard AAA title level.

3. What's your take on it compared to SC? (I'm very much interested in 1st Person Dogfighting and have good gear for it). (SC backers perspective would be wonderful!)
The devs are pretty set on 1st person dogfighting, with very limited ability to go 3rd person (probably possible using a camera drone, which means you can't fly your ship at the same time). I am a Star Citizen backer, but I'm really not that sure on what the flight model will be for that. For Elite, they're favouring pitch 'n' roll over yawing, so it's got that WW2 flavour, but you can also do 'Newtonian' stuff like flip your ship over. I think they're aiming for roughly similar things.

There should be 25 playable ships when the game launches, and loads of modules to swap in and out.

4. Do you think the organisation is sound? (The right people at the top / dev's?)
Yes, David Braben is one of the key figures in videogame history. Elite was the first game that combined sandbox gameplay with action, and was way ahead of its competition. It was one of Chris Roberts' favourite games growing up. He also released a couple of love/admire sequels, which suffered slightly at the hands of publishers.

Since then he's run a successful independent dev studio, with healthy financials.

5. Will people still be buying in after the Dec 3 deadline? What will that look like?
The deadline is the 6th. Not sure on the prices, but you no longer get the perks.

6. What is customer service like?
The one time I asked for help, I got it, but I've not really needed to find out.

7. Does it make sense to back SC and ED?
I did. They're similar enough that they should appeal to the same people, but different enough that you'll get something different out of each.

8. Any Video's or forum posts that should be my first stop?
Check out the 1. Is there any benefit in becoming an original backer, do you think?[/Quote]"]Design Decision Archive, which has lots of info on the various gameplay systems.

9. What excites you guys the most about ED?
There's a huge galaxy to explore, with tens of thousands of NPC inhabited systems and billions of unexplored ones. There's an alien menace lurking out there too. All of this will evolve with some direction from the devs, and a lot based on player actions. Systems will rise and fall, and you can find your own stories to follow.

10. I loathed some things about STO. I hated the greedy, stinking, money grabbing systems in place to suck ever increasing money out of you. Specifically, Character restricted items, money capping unless you pay MORE, and DROP BOXES. I swear if I see a dropbox I'll have a fit. We'll find out fairly shortly, but they're at least involving the community in their discussions. The community doesn't like being leeched, so I've high hopes for a system that keeps the servers running without making the players feel like rent boys.

11. How is PVP being implemented? Is there space for a mainly PVE player?
We're not sure whether there's going to be an enforced PVE version of the open group, though possibly not. If you want a co-op session with friends, or just want to go solo, you can filter out the other players by entering a private group.

Obviously some of this is subject to change during the testing phase, when we find out how well the systems work.

Phew! That was a lot of questions...

Great stuff!
Thank you for your comments, what changes after (is it?) December 3?

It's after December 6h, they replace current backer app with preorder shop. That means that most of current backer sweet tiers will be gone and will be replaced with game preorder in form of game copy + alpha or beta access. There maybe other deals offered there, but no information about that.

Hi Echo Seven! As a fellow SC backer I'll give it a try!

1. Is there any benefit in becoming an original backer, do you think?
There are some levels that give you some benefit: Starting positions and lifetime free upgrades (that last one is at about 80 pounds I believe). Other than that nothing like LTI or something similar to SC.

2. Is the pricing of buying in going to increase?
I would think so but that is based on nothing. I think the amount of choices that we currently have will deminish. At the moment of Retail some options might still be left.

3. What's your take on it compared to SC? (I'm very much interested in 1st Person Dogfighting and have good gear for it). (SC backers perspective would be wonderful!)
It's the same and also very much different. That's what attracts me to both. SC is currently about 55 stars each with a number of planets. Every detail needs to be designed and built. E: D will have a different setup through Procedural Generation. This will make it possible to simulate our whole MilkyWay Galaxy (currently anounced as about 400 BILLION stars). Yes this game is BIG!
Also in SC it looks to me the big player guilds will become a force to be reckoned with. In E: D I have a feeling that you can loosely connect to a group of players. So I think you'll be more on your own. Dogfighting will be common in both games if you choose so. SC does have a very clear possibility to join a fellow gamer in his ship and perform a role on that ship (gunner, 2nd in command, henchman, floor sweeper :D...
In E: D ... we don't really know yet.

4. Do you think the organisation is sound? (The right people at the top / dev's?)
I think Frontier Development has proven theirselves at a similar level as Chris Roberts (although on much different terrains). Recent video's definately show good quality and throughout the last year FD has always been straighforward about the direction they're going. David Braben and Michael Brookes are rock solid in their ways of communicating (except for the repetitive use of the word "SOON" ;) but that is also used a bit as a meme by now)

5. Will people still be buying in after the Dec 3 deadline? What will that look like?
After Dec 6 (actually) a new store will come online where different levels of the Beta (and I guess eventually the game) can be bought into. Except these will be without some of the benefits that current backers have.

6. What is customer service like?
Good! Always listening to your wishes and trying to find a solution with you. So ... a bit like Sandi but probably not as good looking

7. Does it make sense to back SC and ED?
I know I did! Both games will suck up time I am sure but both games will also be around for a long time I predict (and hope). No reason to be in a hurry. I think depending on my mood and/or friends that are online I will switch to the other game on a daily basis.

8. Any Video's or forum posts that should be my first stop?
Look for the DAMOCLES VIDEO and the two recent follow up video's of which the last one was released only yesterday. Both do some explaining of the Damocles video.

9. What excites you guys the most about ED?
To me... it's being able to play a space game that finally looks and feels reel! And that has a unique approach to generating the worlds that you will visit. Either PG or handcrafted (some systems will be partially handcrafted as far as we understand) I am just very eager to find out what that has in store for us!

10. I loathed some things about STO. I hated the greedy, stinking, money grabbing systems in place to suck ever increasing money out of you. Specifically, Character restricted items, money capping unless you pay MORE, and DROP BOXES. I swear if I see a dropbox I'll have a fit. In this game... if you don't want to spend extra cash you don't have to. You can earn all necesary stuff in game by flying your ship(s) and make a buck out of trading goods, kill a pirate, run an errand ... etc.

11. How is PVP being implemented? Is there space for a mainly PVE player
There is distinction between online and offline play.
If you only want NPC's and don't have internet you can still play this game. The Persistant Universe will then not be updated for you.
Then online: You can play online and still be alone, with a group of close friends or join the whole group of players. In the first two cases you will enjoy updates from the PU but you choose who you meet up with when it comes to other real humans. The last option is the variant where all other people will be in (as will I). The PU is ONE entity though! Whatever is caused by a group of players in the "all group" will reflect in the game you are playing even if you are playing the single player online version. How this exactly works out I don't know either.

Hope this helps! Cheers!

Can you help me out with a few questions?

1. Is there any benefit in becoming an original backer, do you think?
An investment of 25 pounds gets you a ship decal, which allows access to the Founders System, plus the game of course. You'll get the game for Gamma testing, which is after Beta 2 (around March 2014) Although the more expensive option of 80 gets you a lot more inc all future updates/ expansions for free.

2. Is the pricing of buying in going to increase?
It's not be confirmed, but I don't think so.

3. What's your take on it compared to SC? (I'm very much interested in 1st Person Dogfighting and have good gear for it). (SC backers perspective would be wonderful!)
I think it will be a great game too, not my thing, but still it looks amazing.

4. Do you think the organisation is sound? (The right people at the top / dev's?)
Without a doubt, the Devs have been very open and honest.

5. Will people still be buying in after the Dec 3 deadline? What will that look like?
The pledges will end on 6th Dec, then only selected options will be available, and none of the 'goodies' / extras. Alpha, Beta1 &2 and game.
6. What is customer service like?
Don't have a Frontier game so can't comment directly, but as above, the Devs have been very open and honest, so I would think this would reflect in their customer service.

7. Does it make sense to back SC and ED?
Many have, if you like space games, and can afford to.. why not?

8. Any Video's or forum posts that should be my first stop?
The Design Decision Archrive - great source of info and Frontier Developments youtube channel

9. What excites you guys the most about ED?
400 billion star systems, open play, do what you want.

10. I loathed some things about STO. I hated the greedy, stinking, money grabbing systems in place to suck ever increasing money out of you. Subs are not on their list for funding, they are looking in to some form of money generation, ie micro subscriptions or cash for credits, there are no details as of yet.

11. How is PVP being implemented? Is there space for a mainly PVE player?
You can play offline, solo online, groups. Offline means no evolving galaxy( due to other player actions, injected GM events etc), but no other players. Solo online gives you the changing galaxy, but no other players. Groups is a little more complex, you can have private groups, where you can select a bunch of friends and only ever see them, or be in the 'all' group, meaning you can potentially meet anyone else. A max of 32 players can be in the same 'instance'. It may not sound a lot, but space is pretty big, so actually meeting that number .. well it may be more common in core systems or at game launch etc, but after a while players will be all over the place.

Which leads on to PvP, if you see a ship you can attack it. You may get a bounty on your head or have the police etc come after you too. It's part of the game, but not the focus.

Hope that helps?

11. How is PVP being implemented? Is there space for a mainly PVE player?

Let's see:

1) If you become a Kickstarter backer, you'll get a decal that gives you access to the Founders' system. You won't get this if you buy at retail, and you probably won't get it after next week (eep! December so soon!)

2) Who knows? The basic version might be a bit more expensive than what you pay for now.

3) One big difference between E: D and SC is thar E: D will include around 400 billion star systems. Most of these will be procedurally generated while conforming to current stellar evolution models; however, the nearest 120,000 stars (those visible in the night sky) will be done by hand to match what we know. Furthermore, every known exoplanet will be included!

4) Yep! See above

5) The total at the end of the kickstarter was about 1.5 million; now it's over 2 million, so people are clearly still coming in. I imagine this will continue. E: D will be going into a gamma phase before retail release when all backers can get it, but there will be a last quality control check. There will only be a reset after gamma if something horrible happens

6) Customer service has been fine for me :)

7) I didn't, but a lot of people have. They are both space games, but quite different

9) Very tough to pick! Maybe it's the evolving universe; there is only one server, so everybody has some impact on the game. Worlds will fall, new colonies will arise, the frontier will expand, all due to player choices in missions

10) There will be no subscription fee, and if you pony up to the right level, you will never have to pay for an expansion either. I think there will be stuff you can buy with real world cash, but the game will be balanced so that you can do very well just by playing the game. By the way, in Elite, the journey is the game really, with no overarching story, so if you took out the "grind" there would be nothing left :p!

11) The multiplayer will be via peer to peer connections, with one main server looking after the evolving universe. I think it will be pretty much all PvP enabled, though it would be up to the players who find each other whether they want to fight or team up. Since the players will be spread out over a very wide area, you might never see another player unless you arrange to meet them! There will be plenty of NPCs to go around though

As the above posts contain most of the relevant info, I'll just state that FD is a trustworthy company and David Braben is a industry reference, even into domains outside gaming (Raspberry Pi). As a member of the DDF (Design Decision Forum) I can attest that the devs have been quite engaged with the community - check the DDF archives for useful info and to look at the feedback provided.

I backed both ED and SC, and I feel both games will be fantastic - and different enough to provide good long lasting entertainment. ED will certainly cater for the PVE only player, even in online mode. Main expectation for me is the huge "boundless" universe with a feel of "deep space" (hard for me to explain - something that Frontier had and X series didn't) with diverse activities and great many things to do and places to visit.

A backer (until the 6th) will have unique rewards - how do you value them is always a bit personal, but I think ED provides very good value, specially some tier rewards.

And, almost forgot to mention - the ED community has so far been great!

Just a couple of comments

Its not yet clear what will be in the founders system in terms of numbers of planets but its going to be a place where many of the backers on this forum will hang out. After December 6 the only way you will get into it is to become Elite so I expect it to be a cool place.

Elite - what can I say - the only game that ever sent a chill down my spine and still does.

Others have covered most of the points, but this might give you a bit of flavour...

10. ... Subscriptions are definitely out, but there's nothing specific out there about their overall philosophy. Reading the tea leaves does provide a lot of hope though.

High-level backers get to provide extremely detailed feedback on individual proposals - you can see players actually changing devs' minds in the design discussion archive. Although they've been amazingly receptive on many topics, they've generally ignored player suggestions around monetisation, and frequently say words to the effect of "we're not giving you <feature you really want> because we'd have to take money off you to pay the costs". Even after seeing the money SC was able to rake in from the crowd, Braben floated his life's work on the stock market rather than come back to us a second time.

As it happens, the design forum is expecting to talk about monetisation for the first and only time in the coming days. It won't hit the public archive until well after the 6th, but there's a reasonable chance of some chatter leaking into the general forums before then. If you're still not convinced by the above, you may want to hang around for a few days and see if you can glean any information.

I don't know about the SC forums but everyone here is very helpful. Giving them a list of questions was like showing a red rag to a bull, they love 'em! ;)

Great Community!

Marvelous!

Thank you so much to everyone that took the time, really appreciate the feedback.

I am definitely going to back the project now.

Lovely community!

It's been great to see all the different perspectives!

Expansions included?

Hi,

I've just noticed that I can do an 'addon' where all the expansions are included. This is not part of the 25 pound deal, right? Is there a package that includes that?

Are expansions planned? Are they major? / Is this worth it?

The free expansions for life is only the £80 tier and up, and yes, they're major expansions. One will open up planets so that you can fly from space, go through their atmosphere and land. Star Citizen is doing this with cut-scenes and limiting you to small areas around the landing pads.

Another is first-person gameplay, so you'll be able to walk around your ship, space-stations and again you can go anywhere you like on planets.

If the game keeps going the expansions will hopefully keep going. There might be an underwater expansion, adding underwater bases and submarine type gameplay. There might be smaller expansions too, but we haven't really heard anything about that.

This is one of the exciting things Elite will hopefully have to offer in the future.
