120Hz on the Index/Quest 2 - Worth it in Elite?

The beta for 120Hz is now available for Quest 2 if you have the PTC option on in Home. I haven't tried it yet because I am still forced to use my 1070.

I am happy to play ED at 72 Hz, unlike Dirt Rally, which has to be 90Hz. I am defo looking forward to playing BeatSaber at 120Hz.

Does anyone play ED at 120Hz? That's a significant increase over 90Hz, a third again. I hear the Index can go 144Hz? That's twice the default of the Quest and Quest 2!

I would love to hear your thoughts - should I become even more impatient for 3080 availability than I already am, or not worry about it

On a 2D monitor, the difference between say, 60 and 144 is night and day. Provided your rig can handle it, it is a glorious experioence and absolutely enhances gameplay.

In VR, it is only going to make that even better. Now I have tried to get the Quest 2 via both Link and VC to run at 90, and for the most part it keeps up - with lower settings of course, I'm using a 2080 Super. A 3080 or 3090 is going to be a significant upgrade to VR and I would expect that 120hz is possible, perhaps with a little reduction in settings.

I imagine 144 is going to be pushing most rigs in VR, so I would expect some reprojection - however, considering how good reprojection tends to be, it should still feel good, and is definitely recommended.

BTW I wasn't aware the 120hz mode was actually active... thats incredibly exciting and goes against their own timeline.... I wonder if it supports Link, and if VC is going to add it soon...

Sweet! Yeah I have a 144Hz monitor.

I was under the impression it had just released for the PCVR via Link, with Quest 2 standalone update arriving later.
TBH I haven't checked, I only watched VR Flight Sim Guy's video, where he talks about it and how to get it:
Oculus Home > Settings > Beta and opt in to PTC, which will download the update.
I will check when I get back.

Soz for being a numpt: VC?

Personally I prefer more details and 90 FPS on the index - of course if I could, I would, but my poor 2080 Super already struggles with my current settings (and no, reducing shadows is out of the question - it just adds to much)

For experiences where high speed head movement is common higher refresh rates are awesome.

For more sedate experiences like ED you generally dont get much wow factor out of anything above 90hz.

I tried it with my Index at 120hz and it wasnt worth the hefty downsizing of the intermediate frame buffer resolution.

I run 120hz on my Index, trying 144 currently and it seems to handle it fine on a 2080 and 5600X running the VR Ultra setting

Oh hahaha sorry, I meant VD - Virtual Desktop :D

And no, I'm not seeing any 120Hz option - I suspect the interwebz would be alive with news if that had happened...

Given how I can barely keep things smooth at 90hz with my 3070 & Quest 2, I don't think I'll get any benefit from going to 120.

If the oculus software had a way of doing per-game display config like SteamVR does, I'd probably actually reduce the refresh for Elite back down to 80 so I could afford to increase resolution a bit more.

Why don't you just adjust the slider? It is only a couple of clicks or so:
Launch Home
Go to Devices and set the slider and Hz
Click OK
Put on Q2 and activate Link (which auto launches Home again)
Game

I do it for beat saber and ED and I don't think it's remotely a ballache

120Hz can help, when you can not get 90hz stable. Why? Because that special mode that renders on 90Hz 45 Images when you can get 90 FPS and create between every frame a "fake" image to get it smoother runs on 120Hz at 60 FPS. So even 144Hz could be interesting, then you will have 72 FPS with a fake image every second image to reach 144Hz and than you should notice that bad artefacts of the fake images, that can sometimes happen, not so much anymore than on 45 FPS.

Maybe it is worth a try.
