145% Power usage ?

I'm playing around with edshipyard trying to design my first combat ship.

On this Viper I get up to 145% power usage ?

Can anyone explain to me how I am supposed to manage this and what will happen once i deploy hardpoints ?

Many thanks

When you deploy hardpoints your ship is likely to go dead in the water. You can manage a few percent power by prioritising modules or turning off things like fuel scoop. But not 45%.

Glad you asked before you tried to do it!

Deploying more kit than your power plant can produce ends up with your ship shutting down and or possible self destruct!

To manage power you can setup the module priority section on the right panel.

Have fun!

Your Cargo Scanner is responsible for 27% of the 145% total, your KWS for another 27%. Get rid of both of those or decide which one you really need. Do you want to be a Bounty Hunter (KWS) or a Pirate (Cargo Scanner)? You can't be both. The Viper is an excellent ship that will fulfil one role and one role only, if you try to make it into a multi-purpose ship then you will encounter these issues.

Personally, I would ditch both scanners and put some weapons on it.

Edit: Also, do you really need Rating A Life Support? You seem to have everything A rated. Decide what you really need to keep at A rating and use D rated modules for what isn't so important.

145%? That's not going to work, you'll need to drop down some of the equipment to lower grades and then use prioritization as Shads mentioned.

Try taking lesser kill warrant and cargo scanners, lower sensors and life support and have multi-cannon small weapons and pulses as main.

he is telling you to be blind, suffocate, and attack with the strength of a sidewinder

hey welcome to Viper world mate

What tagos said in a bit more detail: in EDshipyard, untick the box next to your FSD drive as this will show you your power usage once you have deprioritised the FSD module. Next downgrade the KWS and the cargo scanner. Choosing D rating scanners will put you at around 93% power usage, which should be fine. No other changes needed and you could work up the list of scanners to see how much you can improve the ratings without running out of power.

You hit 145% without having the anything in the medium hard points? The Viper is a balancing act for power, which means you need to choose what you are going to do and specialise your loadout. If every ship could carry maxed out modules and weapons it would be a very dull game.

As well as the power management suggestions from others, I'd also point out that Class A isn't always best (downgrading life support has already been mentioned). But the real killer for you is the scanners. Running lower class scanners will greatly reduce power consumption, going from the A to C class scanners will take you down to a manageable power consumption.

At the end of the day, how you change the modules depends what you want to use the ship for.

Ok for a start, you don't need an A-rated life support on a Viper. You'll never be 25 minutes away from the nearest station. That thing is for explorers.

Also, A rated KWS does not work on a Viper. Neither does A rated Cargo scannning.

As for the A rated shield generator, the Viper is already very strong on shields, it can be flown perfectly well using 3D shields.

The viper is restricted by its power plant. You can't fit it for everything at once.

Personally I'd opt for D level scanners sensors and life supports, as they're lighter models so Jump range will improve.

I like the fact that just loading out the most expensive kit doesn't always give you something excellent. It keeps the kitting game more interesting when combos of variously-rated kit can give you optimal results instead of purely Fling Monies improvements.

This is the loadout I am currently running on my viper. I completely shut down cargo scoop, and priority 5 on FSD, Fuel Scoop and DC. You will notice that both utility mounts are empty as well. Not an ideal situation, but it is working out fairly well for pve RES hunting and to a lesser extent, high intensity warzones. I don't know if this will help or not, but I thought I'd put it out there for discussion/derision of my fellow Viper pilots.

Hey thats great info about the unticking of the boxes, I was unaware of that! +1 to you!
