2.1 beta feedback - warning for explorers....

On balance of my esteemed CMDRs solid sensible advice and on watching the vid of the FED corvette getting bum loved by psycho NPCs I think I will delay return until this silliness gets balanced.

I can make more money out here that way:)

Today's inspirational advice:

Pilots with 100MCR of exploration data should refrain from dropping into Resource Extraction Sites on the way back home to dock.

:)

I don't want to reply just with a video but I really really can't resist:

Are you sure? I could get a few million in bounties to hand in at the same time as my exploration data and make even more money...

I'm racing back myself, still 47K lys out. I want to be back in the bubble before 2.1 goes live. Honestly I want that upgraded FSD drive anyway, so I'll grind for that and then head back out with my new and improved long range Asp.

Do NPCs even attack outside the bubble? I never ran into any once I got in the grey.
Not anymore. There was a time after launch that you would see the odd Eagle and Adder just outside the bubble, but I forget if it was around 1.2 that was patched so that NPC's stuck to inhabited space.

...
Speaking to the long term aspects of the exploration career path, it seems fairly clear that by the end of the year (2.4), being a passive explorer will simply no longer be a viable option.

I'm not convinced.

I'd like to think a potentially dangerous encounte rout int he black is about a slikely as hitting a binary pair the wrong way. ie - possible, but doesn't happen very often at all. I've seen it twice in 520k LY. Though it may also depend on your proximity to possible "alien space".

I'll bet you five space bucks that 2.4 will be raiders and pirates chasing us across the galaxy in souped up Eagles & Sideys, spamming us with comments like "Look at all that tasty data!!!" and "I can't believe I finally found you!"

I'm definitely going to arm myself for the next big expedition:)

I'm in a sidey, 63KLY from the bubble, no shields, currently 79% hull and a ton of exploration data...even if I thrashed the Grass Hopper II I don't think I could make it back in time before 2.1

I think I will be stopping first at Kano where the space station is 13ls from the entry point...and I'll be calling a few friends to ride shot-gun on my run in...

It will be a little scary I think.

Perhaps you haven't had the correct accident yet but I've depleted the hull of an SRV pretty easily in the past landing after a jump kind of hard or hitting a rock that I thought would have been easy to traverse over (this is the more frequent one I have come across, they just annihilate you). I've found that the SRV takes more a beating when it takes that sudden sharp impact as opposed to rolling down the side of a mountain.
Sure - I've lost 30-40% at a time for the worst collisions (generally when I get flipped into the air by one rock and come down roof-first on another rock before I can regain control). Last night in beta I lost 25% hull hauling a few escape pods a few hundred metres out of a shipwreck, just from bouncing off a couple of tiny rocks on the way in.

Sounds like a plan to stock up on synthesis materials before all the hard work done by the rock rats (and others) are made obsolete :(

Absolutely this!!
As much as I hope that they will stand to their word (by no less than Michael Brookes himself), that material distribution will not change, I will put some time into prospecting for the very rares and rares before 2.1 hits. As it is in the current beta I have not been able to find any very rare and only one rare in 2-3 hours of prospecting on two different worlds, even using instance-resetting. This is - sorry - ridiculous!! What have we done all the work for during Distant Worlds??

My return trip from Beagle Point after the DW expedition is nearly over, I am just 3000 LYs from the bubble now. I am not sure yet if it's safer to dash for an outlying system in solo or to ask for escort from the Iridium wing for fellow DW explorers. Perhaps I am too distrustful, but I am scared of the scenario where a Iridium wing member might turn out to be a turn-cloak who thinks "what the hell, lets just blow this stupid explorer bloke out of the sky" instead of protecting me

Just go in solo to a high security system where the station you're docking as isn't too far from the entry point. Never had a problem. Doubt you'd have a problem with the iridium guys, either.

I actually got interdicted there once. Did manage to outrun the AI though.

In 2.1 ?

Not my feedback and a lot might change before it goes live, but you should all read this thread

Here is my post :

You can always do the trader favourite of submit boost jump if interdicted. You'll be through the last 100 LY in 3 jumps, and can then sell data or add more shields etc. It won't be a problem unless you stay and fight.

With all due respect, you misunderstand. :)
The jumping from systen to system is not the problem, the "in system" SC to a base is the huge problem.

I did this exact test of coming in to the bubble(I was at the edge already when I self destructed for 2.1) with the specific task of landing anywhere to "sell" data.
In an Asp, no guns but average shields, good boost, and lots of experience as a decent runner :D

First interdiction I SUBMITTED , but alas the game didn't think so, so I got the 45 second(or thereabouts) penalty. Within 10 secs(or less) of the NPC firing on me I had no shields ! I immediately changed tactics and kept turning in to him and boosting, and still being hit. I worked my backside off until the FSD was back online and left with much hull damage, it was fun :) but then I didn't have 2 months of data to protect, or an already damaged hull, and I had shields.

2nd interdiction, submit worked, got more hull damage(shields were only on 2 rings to start with) and SC out

Then I did the usual of passing the station at 100% throttle and turning around to go back to it, just managed to come out of SC as I noticed a pesky NPC going behind me :)

p.s. If my Asp did have guns(and I had lots of data) I would have still ran, as these new NPCs are hugely better and tougher(which I like)

If Jaques could buy data I'd be *so* tempted to turn around and sell back it at BP if I was you :)
