2.2 Beta VR stuff...... what are your thoughts?

I didnt want to post in beta discussion as i have not actually been able to install the beta yet so figured they would not want my chat cluttering the forum.

in the mean time.

what are your thoughts of 2.2 beta in VR.

the new VR high and ultra, any other things you noticed? how to rings and planets look ? (i guess its a non VR thing too but i think the hideous planer surfaces at a certain distance looked worse in VR than on a monitor)

If discussing the VR high and ultra and commenting on performance, remember to mention what GPU you are running.

thanks

Won't get a chance to try it until later tonight, but I'd rather they'd made the Galaxy and System maps usable in VR before looking at higher performance. I was pretty happy with what I had, just had to revert to the screen to be able to navigate the Galaxy map...

I read this a lot..... out of curiosity what contols do you use? i find the galmap in VR perfectly usable when using either an xbox pad or my hotas.

mouse is a total bust however.

They are totally usable if you properly set your key binds.......

I want to know about the readability changes.

Has the texture behind the text improved readability? Chime in when you know!

OK - now in with the Oculus. To be fair I haven't played in a while.

The text is definitely more readable - I reduced my SS from 1.5 back to the standard 1.0 and the text/font is still quite readable. Main menu doesn't seem different, but at an Engineers base, the text is both capitalized and I *think* an easier to read font. Left/right ship menus "feel about the same", sorry I do not have screenshots. There is also a 1.25X SS option which I do not remember being there before - I think it used to go from 1.0 to 1.5 as 1 step.

These tweaks will help free up GPU horsepower for other things.

My current settings are custom: no bloom, blur. high textures DOF reflections, medium env material, low shadow FX ambient. 980Ti OC on 4.6 GHz 2600K.

I have just tried the beta and just inside a large station I cant pick up on any graphical improvements, the one thing that has happened is that I can sit with 1.5 supersampling on usually without issues, but with the same settings in the same station reprojection is on almost constantly. I hope this is something they can fix in beta as I cant see anything added to justify it.

I am going to go back on later to see if I can compare the two any closer, but nothing stands out yet.

That said the other things are lovely, the new station interiors, improved loading screen between systems and the new station screen are all amazing.

dont forget that VR medium is the old VR High, so if you just stuck it on VR High as that is what you had on before, you are actually running 1.5x SS as default.

No they are definitely exactly the same settings as I use custom. I even double checked to see if they had added a new graphical setting we didnt had before but I cant see anything.

Im going to try it in a few more locations and compare with vanilla to see if it was just that station or if it is also in other situations too.

Ice asteroids look really good now in VR :).

stumblingdrunk - I think they added to materials quality that may be impacting VR. station surfaces, may be a bit more reflective. Also try solo to see if FPS raises; the beta servers are always sluggish and for some reason it seems to impact FPS. Finally - what CPU are you running? This update may have pushed that over the edge too as the CPU is what usually determines minimum FPS.

Separately - I'm getting crashes when entering supercruise about 50% of the time now. I also couldn't enter Orbital Cruise on a planet in Shinrarta Dezhra.

I just tried it again around the station and reprojection is on alot more. I dont understand why it would be worse though as nothing has been added to stations (unless its hidden) as im in the standard station (im pretty sure materials quality was always there). My CPU is a 3570K at 4.5ghz, but as its identical to what ive always been using so I dont think its that. Its not visibly massively different, but with notify in headset on vive, reprojection is now constantly on inside the station. Iam going to raise it under bugs as im sure it shouldn't be that way.

If you are on oculus. Use the debugging tool to figure out whether it's CPU or GPU. That should help frontier help you (or all of us).

I am on Vive, but I was using the display frames in the SteamVR settings and the CPU is never fully utilised. The GPU however is flat out and I have a 1080. The more I think about it the more I think it could be the new adverts they have introduced, but its almost a non-thing in the grand scheme of things. If you go to a tourism station the judder is huge so many of us are just going to have to tone down the supersampling to cope with it.

Im loving the new look of the stations, but its a shame the rest of the game is going to have to look look worse to display it adequately in VR (for Vive atleast)

If any of you Vive users have a similar setup i would love to hear about your experience of supersampling in the beta
