2.2 Beta VR stuff...... what are your thoughts?

Ok, I wasn't thinking that far ahead. I had it at 1.25 in game and 1.5 in Steam. Then for the beta I changed to 0.65 and realized I didn't change Steam to the recommended 2.0 yet. I'll do that now.

So this is my first Beta just so i know i can do anything in the Beta and it all gets reset anyway correct? In other words I can experiment with ships etc. lose my A in some battles and will not affect the real game?

yes, don't worry for beta they made a copy of your commander on test servers. Just be very carefull to be on the beta as sometimes when you want to launch quickly the game, you can launch the live build ^^

Got it thank you going to go have some fun on this tonight

Just for the records. If u set in game SS at 0.65 u need external SS to be set at 1.54 to obtain the native resolution.

Whats the formula for this setup? Normally I use 0.75 or 0.85 in Elite and 1.5 in the Oculus SDK. To whta I must change my Oculus SDK setting?

hey there,

well it is as simple as a multiplication. considering 1 is native resolution, u have to multiply 0.65 with a number to get 1 as a result.
0.65*1.54=1 (1.001 to be exact) which is native resolution. (dunno about oculus but steamvr will modify the SS value to get the result to a valid resolution when starting)

Hi mad Mike, out of interest do you super sample using steamvr or the oculus debug tool? I can't tell from your response, but Arachau seems to agree with me that supersampling and the new beta is meaning lots of judder that wasn't there before.

As I mentioned it's nothing to do with the settings as I don't use the presets I use the custom setup so the change wouldn't have had any impact between the old and the new.

I really can't see how you could run VR high with decent supersampling (in steamvr config) in the new tourism stations but if you and others are I could love to know so we can help me and others

The new VR high has super sampling built into the setting itself I think so if you super sample outside of elite then run vr high you are doing it twice (that is my understanding). To het the same settings as 2.1 ingame in 2.2 beta you need to run vr medium.

I run with super sampling off and use vr high in game which I think I read super samples at 1.5.......

Have noticed the last 2 days that Voice Attack is not working great with the Beta having to repeat commands a lot. To verify went back on Horizons and did not have to repeat a command once in 2 hrs. Not sure what would cause this but a little iffy when you are trying to disengage and hearing crickets

Won't get a chance to try it until later tonight, but I'd rather they'd made the Galaxy and System maps usable in VR before looking at higher performance. I was pretty happy with what I had, just had to revert to the screen to be able to navigate the Galaxy map...

+Rep for this and, totally agree.

I only tried my DK2 once with 2.2b and what I was pleased to see was the awful memory leaking after 40 mins of game play appeared to have gone, I have actually reverted back to screen because of the 2.1 mem leak issues I was seeing. I have yet to test 2.2b more with my Rift but I am too busy so I think the next time will be the live 2.2 :/

I use VR high with my Rift CV1 with some settings reduced, because of my GTX 970 MX Gaming (no i dont get 90 fps, but constant fps, so it doesnt give me the swirls). Overall the performance is better than before. Performance in Beta 3 was better than in Beta 4 though, especially in stations.

The visual quality is incredible, compared to 2.1.05. The planetary surfaces are much crisper, both on approach and when down on the surface. Rocks and other surface features have received a material upgrade and they are placed in a greater variety. Looks more ramdom now and the sizes go up from pebbles to the size of small houses.
Ambient Occlusion really adds to the visuals and i love, what Frontier did to the sub surface scattering of the ice textures.
The level of detail of materials waere increased and are more crisp. The ring systems are just wow, both on approach and on entering.

In opposition to the OPs post, i find the VR experience in 2.2 Beta x much better than before. The only thing i hope for, is getting the performance of Beta 3 back. Concerning the memory leak, the game hasnt crashed to desktop once and i have no judder building up over time. Very good experience so far.

All good news, repped.

I always disliked the monotony of rocks etc When in the SRV, hopefully there's a greater variety, and most importantly, variety in size (some rocks should be BIG).

Glad to hear the material textures have been improved too. Vid card memory should be full of the best textures the engine can throw at the game!

I upped the graphics on the planets yesterday in the beta as I couldn't stand the blurred textures. Even if the fps are a bit low I have to keep it. Having the planets look that good, I just can't go back.
