All this flying around solar systems has inspired me to watch 2010 again - anyone else seen it? Great movie and I was thinking the scene where they dock with the derelict Discovery One would be a great template for the 'salvageable wreckage' instances or some variant.

Yes. Though not as cinematically unique as 2001 it was a great movie to watch nevertheless. Watching it as a kid I remember feeling really uneasy to being downright creeped out by it but man was it gripping.

Agree. Has to be 2001 for me. I saw 2010... it was ok. Nothing has ever really made me want to watch it again. 2001 I HAVE to watch again and again.

My Google Fu is usually pretty good, so I'm surprised it was so difficult for me to find anything about this movie! I've now put it on my list of things to watch :D

Is that the movie where Jupiter gets turned into a star by some incredibly advanced Aliens?

"ALL THESE WORLDS ARE YOURS—EXCEPT EUROPA. ATTEMPT NO LANDING THERE. USE THEM TOGETHER. USE THEM IN PEACE"

(So what's the first thing we'll all do in Horizons? :D )

2001 had the Kubrick touch which made it a classic and was full of that special movie making he had a knack for. 2010 ultimately I think is a more "watchable" movie because of the more simplistic approach to the "issue" vs the mystery that 2001 presented. What I found to be great in 2010 was the whole forced collaboration between the US and USSR crews (a product of its time) which was required from a technical standpoint but very much frowned upon given that the world was on the brink of nuclear war. The whole aspect of having to work past the political crisis and try to unravel the mystery of Discovery and the prior mission.

Finally all the Dave Bowman appearances could have been straight out of a horror movie in how they were done which gave a bit of shock factor since you were tense from the looming war and tension building even on the ship.

A fantastic movie in my book.

Of the two movies 2001 is still my favourite and by far one of Kubrick's finest works to this day. 2010 was as already said by EAGLE 5 a more watchable film and easier on the mind. The play within a play of the unfolding cold war situation on Earth was superbly done. So many great scenes and so many great quotes from both films, true Sci-Fi at it's best, and don't forget that Kubrick used the moon set from 2001 to fake the Apollo landings for NASA lol.
