3 fire buttons?

On my warthog.

I put the little finger trigger as secondary and KWS is always secondary (ADS for exploring).
The primary trigger is my primary fire and the trigger dpad up / down is the switch fire groups.
Works very well once you get used to it.

Pull in the little finger trigger for KWS and always keep it pulled until finished. This allows you to fire main weapons and release without releasing the KWS. Also switching fire groups is simple with the dpad up / down and you are totally independent of the KWS

This aircraft

uses this stick

Many of us use this stick

It can be loaded with cannon mavericks bombs Laser bombs sidewinders laser pods and so on - if its inconvienent why the hell didn't the military design the stick better

It's not the stick that's the problem, it's how you map the buttons on the stick to the systems. USAF can have them wired to any button they like.

Don't really care about extra fire buttons, but I want a separate key for KWS and any other scanners etc that go in a fire group

+1

Yes this. Fire groups for weapons and configurable buttons for everything else. Having a KWS button doesn't give anyone a special advantage in PVP.

Not having keys for these does force you to setup and use your firegroups though.

Design decision to increase complexity (and risk of getting it wrong when under pressure) and nothing to do with controllers afaik.

If we're going to talk about thing that keep coming up, and are modelled after military aircraft, can I get a decent HUD please, with flight path indicator, target aspect, closure and decent weapon range info up front? ;) (Sorry I'll get my coat...)

Sure! One sec, let me just find my magic wand.. :)

Maybe its because I'm using mouse & keyboard, but this really isn't a problem for me. I've got 3 firegroups. First is discovery scanner, second is scanners & lasers, third cannons & lasers. So going into combat start with KWS & Lasers. KWS goes while lasers strip shields, one button press (and I don't even have to stop firing) and switch to cannons to start blasting. In a RES that means I'll need to hit the button twice to get back to KWS & lasers. Most smaller ships I just laser anyway, so its only when fighting bigger ships I need to switch. In a CZ I don't need to switch either. Very occasionally I forget and fire my cannons when I'm meaning to scan. 90% of the time they miss anyway so just throwing a few credits away.

And yet they follow virtually the exact same weapons management strategy that FD have employed, just like virtually all fighters over the years have. Only two weapon release triggers/buttons because that is the most sensible use in a combat situation. A primary and secondary weapon release with additional weapon selection functionality.

Keeps things managed and simple.

Scanners are a different issue but can be mostly managed with a single weapon bind anyway since they are context sensitive and are not needed all the time anyway.

Countermeasures should be a dedicated bind like chaff, heatsinks and shield cells.

On my warthog.

I put the little finger trigger as secondary and [...] The primary trigger is my primary fire

Eesh, sounds awkward to pull both at the same time - the red button is the designated weapon release button of course but you are free to use whatever binds works best for you :)

Re. a fire button for every weapon...
Such a setup would offer the most control and granularity. No ship has over eight weapons, and I've used as many triggers without issue in other games.

Sorry but that's just daft and totally gamey - what buttons would you allocate for each weapon? Why do you even need to fire individual weapons in such a (disorganised) way? - do you play the clarinet by any chance? Why do you need to pick and choose individual weapons to fire like that, you're trying to destroy an enemy ship not spray paint a pattern on it with different colours.

Try using:
lasers
cannons
collector limpet
advanced discovery scanner
kill warrant scanner
frame shift scanner
frame shift interdictor

Which I have now mounted of my corvette, because Engineers reasons (grinding stuff for upgrades)

3rd or even 4th fire buttons are a must... most os us flying joystick have 12+ buttons anyway. Or make it a dedicated bind for scanners, another fire button would be probably easier to implement.
