3305 Squeegee technology severly lacking.

FDev. Please remove the vomit inducing smudge marks from our canopies!!
I hate admiring this gorgeous galaxy only to turn towards a star and see those
disgusting trouser stains all over my cockpit. What in the world were you thinking
when "designing" them??

"Oh, they're gonna love looking at these gruesome smudges herp, derp, derp".

Did humanity forget how to clean windows in 3305? I can't stand it if I have one
single bug splatter on my cars windshield. What made you think I would enjoy staring
at this garbage from my amazing starship?

Can't even make out the reticle or anything! Ridiculous... Luckily there are some custom shaders you can use to "clean" the windows.

First - I wear eye glasses and probably as every other user of sight augmentation I have an OCD about clean surface.
Second - despite above I welcome that small GFX detail. It proves that devs can achieve nice results if they want. Tho I would like more variety in design instead of every screen looking exactly the same.
Third - granted speed we can achieve I'm amazed that our front doesn't go matte within first hour of flying. Few scratches as a final result isn't that bad.

Also - bruises add to character.

The thing is those canopy scratches should only appear on ships that are flying without shields. Any other ship the shields should stop any 'space dust' getting near the canopy.

Edit - which really means I just thought of something AFTER I clicked the POST button ..

Maybe this is all a clever ploy foretelling the arrival of Space Legs/Elite Feet. Just think, there could be a whole group of unemployed citizens floating around the mail slots, 34th Century equivalent of the bucket of dirty water and a 99cent squeegee in hand, just waiting for you to coast through the slot so they can clean your canopy for a few credits .....

They could link it to the ship paint percentage.... a nice incentive to keep you ship in good repair, although the explorers would probably come and burn down the forum 😁

I could deal with that. In fact that would be kind of cool. Having your canopy get grimy over time until you click fix paint.
Anything but this perma puke we have now.

I believe a ship at 100% repair, integrity and paint job should have a damned-well crystal-clear screen and should deteriorate as does paint But I think hull repair limpets or AMFU SHOULD be able to clean the glass.

I agree about the shields thing protecting the screen thing. They should also protect the paint jobs better.
I'm also inclined to think that shields should be necessary for super cruise and hyperspacing without taking damage, too.

Mini rant:
Personally, I think that it should be the shields that allow us to fly within the corona of a sun like we can and not instantly frazzle. I really wish they had sorted out the stellar proximity behaviour. Flying so close to a blue giant that it fills up 120 degrees of one's vision should be a death sentence if the shields drop, or at least an instant requirement for multiple and continuous heatsinks.

There were so many more satisfactory ways of handling wear and tear and physical damage that they could have implemented... Instead, all we got was one ship with actualised damage states: The Anaconda. And even those are global HP based...

The scratches got worse with 3.3, it seemed. The AspX looks like a closed-down shop now, when the light hits the canopy. It never used to be that bad, and the more subtle scratching that was in 3.2 was actually quite agreeably believable. Maybe the new lighting model made it more obvious, or something.

The shader fixes I’ve tried seem to have their own side-effects, like darkening the overall image too much.

It would be great to see this dialled back considerably. (And whilst they’re at it, remove the daft tinting of the skybox)

Yeah, the skybox being the same colour as the nearby star is a bit pathetic.
Are you confusing this with No Man's Sky?

The skybox isn't the same color as the star in any system afaik. There is however a local region near the star that becomes tinted, roughly approximating the fact that all stars have rather significant atmospheres and constantly eject material into space.

Our own sun's atmosphere, in a very loose technical sense, envelops earth entirely due to this ejected matter. The corona extends millions of km into space.

I have never seen anything like that, in my version of Elite the glare looks very realistic, this on console?

This is how glare/scratching looks for me, and i really like it, because without it i would feel like there's no glass in front of me.

I agree with all this but.......

Can we not have both?
Would it not be even better if our ship's canopy was cleaned when our ships get serviced at a station and then gradually get clarty again as we fly them?

As anybody who's ever sit in the fornt seats of an aircraft will confirm, some imperfections in a canopy can always be noticed in the right lighting conditions and I suspect that's the effect FDev were going for with our canopies but it seems like, perhaps, they've overdone it a bit.

Surely it wouldn't be that hard to have, say, 10 different overlays to represent 10 different levels of groatiness and then - to avoid sudden, noticeable, changes - only apply a new overlay when you log in for a session.

Here's another screenshot of the scratches/smudges on my windshield, i think it looks great and adds to the atmosphere of being inside a real ship, which is kind of a big part of Elite.

Maybe i should start a thread demanding that Frontier keep them in, and yes i know the effect is more pronounced on the industrial ships, i still think it looks awesome.

I have severe short sightedness and astigmatism, (seeing ovals instead of circles), my glasses could be mistaken as NASA equipment, yet i cannot relate to your point, as windshield and glasses are two clearly separate things for me.

Personally like the scratches and smudges (especially in VR) Was quite annoyed when they toned down the canopy resolution during one of the updates (shortly after gamma)

As long as this game is online-only, we won't see any modding, no modding means we'll get topics like these.
