Horizons 3Dconnexion space mouse as joystick... anybody tried it?

Haven't tried myself and I don't know if Elite supports it natively.

A couple of guys in the Star Citizen guild I'm part of, tried it out for that game - last I checked it required a use of third party software like VJoy.

I use a SP Pro for six axis thruster control. Also have some keys mapped to the buttons, speed percentages, landing key, FSD etc. Works very well indeed.

I tried with small one, Space Navigator, ED recognized it without any additional software, just I could not calibrate it to work as it give signal even if I am not touching it... so it is kind of good for evasive maneuvers, as not even I can tell where I am, but I couldn't control anything with it.
I am jealous on you Magic Man, I want to try working one too! :)

Here's an extensive thread about how to make a 3DConnexion device work with Elite.

My personal experience is that it is fine for peaceful gameplay but falls short for combat.

Very good for landing on high-g planets.
I use it for all "shifting" thrusters controls (3 axis) in pair with a conventional joystick (using solely 3DC's 6 axis doesn't really handy for combat). Can be used as an "alternative" control.
