3rd person view

I'd love a 3rd person camera, that arcade feel. For some reason, players hate it for PvP, but it would be great even without the combat UI elements (target, radar).
Third person allows an invisible camera to peer over or around cover for more intel than they could realistically gather. Thats why in a game like fortnite, you can just camp and wait for the perfect time to peek because you can just watch them without exposing your head. Its not realistic. As for ship pvpv, eh wouldnt really make a difference.

1) Make it a visible camera with a tiny amount of health and a transition animation when you launch it.
2) Cover doesn't matter for hiding anyway. Radar shows you their position, the hologram their orientation. You can even scan another player's ship while they're docked inside a station.

About being realistic- check out BMW’s camera system))) it’s already here, it’s a future but it’s already here)

By the way, MWO implemented this. It's a PvP mech arena game. 3rd person does give you that advantage of looking around corners, but other players can see it and destroy it. You also don't get to use the radar while you're using the camera. This means no warnings if an enemy is behind you. But it did make it easier for newbies to hop in.

To be fair, piloting a mech is like piloting a tank. You have to keep track of where your legs, torso and arms are pointed towards. It's much easier for new players to pilot from 3rd person.

Almost every game which allows you to operate with transport has this feature of 3rd person view and it’s normal. I don’t really understand why ED still doesn’t have it from more than 10 years of existence 🤷‍♂️ and it kills me((

OK, realism nerds, pretty much all complex platforms in the 2020s include ISR drones, so if anything's weird about on-foot Odyssey, it's the absence of them.
Yeah but you dont constantly monitor and integrate your aim and movement based on a drone above your head. Sure you could stop and use it for intel.
But hey since we want to drive home the realism, we would actually just be firing nukes at each other so we should just add those.

Yeah. I mean that's what the "I" stands for? I didn't mention Command and Control at all.

No? I might set fire to your straw man using space lasers though.

When I clicked the thread I thought it would be about the ground game. lol i'm a tool. Some good points, in the thread. I'm fine the way it is. It's current first person state does add a sim feel, an immersive feel, and the flight instruments needed would be kinda... different(?) from a third person point of view. The cinematic camera is a very useful and fun addition, I was actually surprised when I found it, and a bit thankful, because it's not a necessity. Would I like it? Sure. Do I need it, nah. I bet it would take a large effort to make.

That would be a "no" from me. The fact that ED is played from the first person perspective is one of the things I like about the game. Playing from a third-person perspective feels too much like an arcade game, not like a space simulator game.

Yes, I understand that you are not suggesting replacing the first-person perspective with a third-person one, in other words, you are asking for it to be an alternative. However, I myself don't feel the need for such a feature, it would only veer the game towards being an arcade game, it would probably cause all kinds of nightmares with the external camera (after all, we already have those problems with the external view, particularly when going near walls and other obstacles, going through the mail slot, etc), and it would just be development time away from more interesting and useful features and bugfixes.

Ok, then why this game has free camera so? Or why there is a 3rd person view for on foot gameplay? The way that all ships has the only one interior is one of the reasons to play 3rd person view as well, at least will be different ships from outside.
They have like five different cameras around and inside the ship and no arcade camera for those who wants to play it different way…
That’s frustrating somehow

It's not going to change now in 2025, after 11 years.
True, I think so as well unfortunately
But why not to try to reach devs here? It doesn’t cost me anything
And maybe, if they are really reading this website, so there is a little chance to got this feature in next few years😅

To do photography or film work, the default camera positions and lack of instrumentation show it obviously wasn’t intended to be a 3rd person viewpoint option for actual gameplay.

What 3rd person view on foot, there is only the camera suite that we have with the ship or the SRV.

Yes I am sure it is for anyone who wants to play arcade style.
