That is awesome.
ARE YOU LISTENING FRONTIER? This is how you treat backers ;-)
yeah...I'm getting a free rift...yeah...I'm getting a free rift...yeah...I'm getting a free rift...yeah..I'll need a new graphics card..yeah...
That is awesome.
HTC are not in great shape, financially. I suspect they will want to actually make money off the hardware so I'd guess the price difference will not be entirely trivial between the two systems.
Probably pre-ordering the CV1 here as long as it's £400 or less. Any more and I'll wait and see, despite being an Oculus Kickstarter backer so been through the DK1 and DK2 phases.

My suspicion is that given Oculus is shipping with EVE: Valkyrie and Frontier have switched to using Vive for their demos recently, they won't have been sent one of the new dev kits. I'll be happy to be proven wrong and Elite will support Oculus at release, but at this point I'm prepared for disappointment. It's worth noting that the 1.0 sdk dropped over the Holiday period. I'd be very surprised if FDEV did not receive priority access to CV1 "dev kits" to work on the technical issues, and compatibility. FDEV have always said that they are continuing to work with oculus, but the real work starts now with this SDK. When they know, I'm sure they will let us know.
vive has a camera mounted in front, hopefully will allow people to have a way to 'check' things like keyboard and such without having to lift off the headset as you have to do with oculus.
Do we know if Oculus has a front-facing camera? The rumours were that they were going to add one to the consumer hardware, but I can't see anything obvious confirming it. Would seem a bit silly not to have it.In case others hadn't seen today's announcement from CES ...

By pressing a button on a handheld controller, the user can see objects near them ghosted in to the virtual reality environment.
While I wouldn't personally describe a webcam as a "technological breakthrough" this does seem like a VERY cool idea. When I first tried VR (with Eve:Valkyrie) and then started playing Elite I immediately thought ... uh oh, how am I gonna type system names in the galaxy map? (I'm not a touch typist). The idea of being able to press a button to make the display go semi-transparent seemed like an obvious solution to me.

I think they *will* support it, just not at release. My suspicion is that it'll come shortly after the Vive releases to market. They didn't support one driver set for a development kit due to ongoing issues with Oculus. I can't see them ditching the consumer version outright given their former excellent rift support (again for a unit that was still in prototype form) and really good peripheral support overall. It's been an excellent source of press for them, I just can't see them not supporting it.
That said, the advice about waiting is good.

Dont forget Frank that Valkyre is a made for vr game built from the ground up whereas Elite isnt. I think Oculus want the vr gaming industry to go this way, as I think they feel this is how you'll get the best VR experience which is what they are all about. All their declared release games are made for vr, and I expect Valve will be doing the same.
I think future priorities towards either hmd's will only be given for technical reasons and/or based on available resources at the time, the usual story there.
No idea why they would take off the Oculus logo though. Could be that until they are absolutely sure it will work like they do with the Vive, that its best to leave it off for now?
