4K confirmed for Xbox One X. Ps4 Pro owners, take out the Pitchforks!

Really? It's not the Pro that is the problem. The Pro can run ED in 4K. It's Frontier that can't make it work on Pro. I really can't imagine a game like ED ain't possible in 4K on Pro. It's just space, planets, stations and ships. None of it is photo realistic. Nothing we ain't seen before except for the scope of the universe. Nope! Pitchforks it is! :D

Well I am not sure its as clear cut as that, I guess of course the Pro can run ED in 4K as it could be set to output at that resolution but, if the frame rate is like 10fps I am not sure anyone would be happy and FDev would not release it like that.

It brings up another point about Pro 4K support, as while the PS4 Pro does not support a discrete 1440p resolution many games have 1440p as the dynamic resolution target, so internally the PS4 Pro can do 1440p. I was wondering if Elite could run at 1440p on the Pro and how it would perform.....

I agree with both Apollo and Stormy. I believe the Pro can indeed display ED's graphics at 4K (checkerboard), but I also don't believe this is cut-and-dry for Frontier. If ED were a PS4 exclusive, then I think Frontier would have more 'motivation' to do all the incredibly clever optimizations needed to achieve this feat on a PS4 Pro. Being a cross-platform product that's primarily targeting the PC market, I doubt Frontier is going to invest in time and talent needed to make ED really shine on the PS4.

What's sad about this is listening to David Braben talk about how clever he was to get the original Elite to run on computers of those days. For example, redrawing the ship via XOR instead of erasing the screen to greatly increase framerates. We need a modern version of David for the PS4 version of ED. Unfortunately my experience with younger developers coming from PC programming is that they don't know how to optimize in this fashion, as they live in a world where you just throw more CPU, GPU, and RAM at performance problems instead of solving them with clever coding. Developers that make console exclusives are much better at this IMO.

I actually believe this is not on Frontiers end but due to Sony's stated promise/policy that ED would be able to be played & experienced on both the Original PS4 & the newer PS4 pro with little to no difference. Sony for whatever reason doesn't want to break this promise and as such isn't allowing Frontier to do some minor adjustment for the PS4 Pro which is a shame. I think it would perhaps encourage more people to upgrade to a Pro(one would think Sony would be amiable to more sales), but even if they didnt, the game would still be as playable as it is currently on the original PS4 & supported as it is today while allowing the Pro to have increased graphical capability. I do think a 1440p dynamic resolution on the pro would run at a good framerate & be a nice improvement.

I think this is also a factor on why PSVR support for ED on the PS4 pro will never happen.

Just my 2 cents.

Nah, I don't think that's true. HZD is a vastly superior game on the Pro as it supports native 4K with checkerboard. Its also way better at 1080p on Pro than a standard machine. Sony have never stipulated it cant be better on a Pro, just that all games must run on base hardware.

And as a PS4 Slim owner, I'm cool with this because HZD looks "dang good" to me on my humble platform. Seriously, it blows me away, especially because it looks so good on a box I paid $199 for. That's why I throw my support for 4K ED on the Pro even though I don't own one, because this should mean that the quality on the base PS4 will also get better.

That and if Sony ever releases a low-wattage "PS4 Pro Slim", I'll be upgrading :D

Yeah, that's completely inaccurate. Sony say that you can't have any PS4 Pro exclusive games and that you can't segregate PS4 Pro players from users of the normal PS4. There's nothing to say that the performance can't be better on the PS4 Pro and this is what every other developer does when they develop their games to handle both platforms.

The limitations on Elite are purely down to a lack of will from Frontier who for whatever reason don't want to spend the time working on the PS4 version to the level that we want them to. Ultimately that's their decision but the responsibility is theirs alone.

Personally I'm eyeing up Elite on the XB1X to see how much of a difference 4K makes to the experience as it's currently on sale.

Frontier have done some work on the Pro as we know, it is the better version on PS4 and it does look nicer than the base machine, they could and should do more though.

As for 1X, I cant really justify buying an XB1X just for Elite, while the XB1X is undoubtedly the better machine, I still like Sony exclusive games. There are a few on Xbox but nothing like Sony IMO. I thought about it for a nano second.

I wouldn't buy one for Elite either but I'm fortunate enough to already have one sat there doing nothing as I prefer the PS for this generation. The only real question is whether I can be bothered doing the grind for a third time.

Hey Stormy, you know how I keep saying, "I hope you guys get 4K so I get better quality in 1080p," right? Well what if it's the other way around? It seems to be the general consensus that texture quality has received a significant buff. Good 4K requires good textures. This might be a sign that they are indeed working on some form of 4K for the PS4 Pro but haven't fully cracked that nut in time for this update.. Seriously, I'd not give up hope just yet :D

I'll admit that when "general consensus" becomes "comparison screenshots that show how they were indeed improved"

Do you not have 3.0 installed on your PS4? Maybe you need a new TV, LOL ;)

Well, I was having this chat with stormy right now. I do, and as a matter of fact I have a brand-new 4K screen. But yeah, before i opened the forum and saw you guys gushing over the new textures, I honestly did not go "oh wow, they did some tweaking here!". Might be my eyes, granted. But there's only one way to resolve this: cold hard facts. Show me improved textures on a same ship before and after 3.0 and I'll shut up.

One thing that separates me from many of you is that I'm running a vanilla PS4. My textures from 2.4 were nothing impressive, to say the least. If you've been running a PS4 Pro in Quality Mode this entire time, the difference may be far less for you than what it is for me.

This is the best I can do as a first attempt. Note that the yellowish tint (2.4) is less flattering than the white light (3.0). I don't see WOW! improvements TBH, esp if you look at telltale stuff like lights and shadows

Everyone seems to be focused on the outside of their ships, whereas I'm more impressed with my interiors. And you're not going to notice differences in textures from an external camera that's a mile away from your football stadium ship. It's the up-close details that really stand out to me.

Interesting, could you do some Cockpit HUD/UI comparison, I wonder if it will even show up but I am convinced its sharper.

Now you're looking at a wall of text? Just because texture starts with "text", oh nevermind, LOL... How about looking around your cockpit in camera mode, and use the zoom in feature to look at various panels, your flightsuit, etc. Notice the grains, the scratches, the small little details.

If it's going to take a magnified screenshot to convince you, then these changes aren't going to make much difference in your day-to-day gameplay. You might as well just embrace your skepticism and enjoy the game you have.
