4k screenshots in open

Anyone know why high res screenshots aren’t possible in open?
They’re fine in solo and private group, but when in open you can only take low res photos.

I much prefer playing in open cos you meet other players and the game feels more alive, but if I come across a nice scene and want to take a pic, it means logging out to the main menu then logging back in. And frankly it’s a real pain in the a…

The ability to take hi-res screenshots in Open was removed after (some) players realised that they could weaponise it by remapping the My Pictures folder to a very slow storage device, e.g. a very old USB stick and, while writing the screenshot to storage, their ship was invulnerable to damage.

Interesting, I never knew that - cheers Robert.

4k image taken in open. Not a high res screenie, just running the game at 4k.

What's stopping you from taking a desktop screenshot Alt+PrtScr?

The game engine has a feature that allows the player to take a screenshot at a higher resolution than is being displayed. Your suggestion would give an image that is at the native resolution (ie the same as a regular screenshot).

Yes, this is a problem if there is no 4K monitor. It probably stops it. :)

You would also lag your network so you will appear in a different location to other players than what your computer was registering you at IIRC making it difficult to land any shots.

So does this mean even a regular screenshot temporarily (although very briefly) actually makes you invulnerable as well? Couldn’t someone just create a macro/afk script that just continuously took screenshots to exploit that? Oh oh…. Maybe shouldn’t have said the quiet part loud there.

Thanks.
Lol how do they (some players) come up with this stuff?
Wouldn’t have even crossed my mind 🤷‍♂️

With Nvidia cards at least, and presumable AMD as well, you can increase resolution beyond what your display supports and have it downscale it to the screen. In the Nvidia Control Panel this is called Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR). This, in combination with the high resolution feature of the game, is how I've been able to take native 16K (if we're assuming the term 4K UHD is actually 4K, which it usually isn't – why they didn't just call it 4x, when it's actually 4 times the pixels of 1080p FHD is beyond me) screenshots of the game, even using the older version of the debug camera feature.

Cheers.
