5-yo Tissue Sampling Bug

The process to obtain caustic tissue samples is excruciating.
A would rather bang a sharp stone against my skull.
So, i actually really enjoy it. It's an activity that requires specialised fittings, careful planning and tactics in a dangerous environment you just can't hang out indefinitely in, with multiple avenues of approach... and has the potential to go wrong very quickly if you don't. The game needs more high-stakes, complex activities like this. Salvage/ research activities are desperately lacking interesting game loops for all the modules that exist for it (hatch breakers, recon limpets, research limpets etc). It's also not prone to relogging, and the greedier you get, the bigger the chance of losing it all. There's actually nothing else like it in the game that hits so many good points.

More excruciating was the time i farmed 600 pod tissue samples from space organics, where the gameplay is literally "float in space for an hour with your cargo hatch open, occasionally click left mouse button a few times".

What sucks about corrosive tissue sampling, like so many other things in this field, is the limp-wristed payout of something like 50k per sample. Beyond unlocking the corrosive sink, it's a God- awful payout even compared to "you shipped literal biowaste 20Ly, here's half a million credits.

Maybe thargoid war state systems/ rescue ships could offer missions which pay out at least 5-10m per sample.

I don't think they should be that much, that would make it a bit silly if you could go in with a universal limpet controller and get 5+ samples within a few minutes. But the rescue ships should definitely be increased from the lowly payout of what they currently offer (iirc it's something ridiculous like 10% of market value), to somewhere around 1m.

Uh... have you actually sampled a caustic tissue sample before? I only ask because universal research limpet won't change anything... each caustic generator can only be sampled once only... it's not like normal sampling where you can throw 8 limpets on at once... and thank God it's a 100% success rate. Given they're multiple kilometres apart but sampling requires at least getting within 1km with G5 engineered sensors just to get a xeno scan first as well... i have serious doubts anyone could get 5+ samples in minutes.

Throw in all the other complexities on getting these... i can kill Cyclops faster and more safely than i can collect these samples, and that will get me multiple millions.

If there's a video of someone getting 5+ in minutes though, I'd love to see how they're doing it.

When you mentioned thargoid war state/rescue ships I immediately thought of regular tissue samples i.e. the ones the thread was originally about, and how the rescue ships are grossly underpaying for them when they're currently the primary source of war progress.

I've done plenty of caustic generator sampling, doesn't really seem that interesting once you've figured out how to do it... I've been having more fun trying to detonate them inside the maelstrom, from a safe distance with a flak launcher so they damage nearby glaives.

Ah righto. Regular tissue samples would actually pay ok... if the sample rate was 100%... XD

I mean, doesn't that apply to anything? (That one you figure it out, it's not very interesting).

I'd still stand by caustic tissue sampling objectively being way more interesting than many activities out there (like the pod sampling example i gave). But if it's not somebodies particular bag outright, that's fine.

I’ve been able to successfully obtain tissue samples but the sub-targeting process using the left panel is aggravating. By the time I’ve targeting the access point for the research limpet, I look back to the main view and the caustic generator has taken off and left me choking on another cloud of acid. Doing this without a caustic heat sink launcher is punishing.

Here has been my experience:

  1. Plot a course in my AX ship toward a maelstrom. While in hyperspace, get interdicted. If the interdiction is with 2 Glaives, the mission is aborted, because you can't escape without fighting and defeating them. The damage sustained to defeat 2 Glaives is too much for me to continue the mission, so I need to turn back for repairs.
  2. Repair ship. Plot another course in my AX ship back toward a maelstrom. While in hyperspace, get interdicted. If the interdiction is with 2 Glaives, go back to start. If not, then outrun the Thargoids and get into maelstrom system.
  3. Head toward Maelstrom. During supercruise, expect at least two more interdictions.
  4. Enter maelstrom. Locate caustic generators, deal with insane amounts of caustic damage, fumble with left screen sub-targeting routine while receiving endless Thargoid acid belches.
  5. Obtain 1 tissue sample, head back to home base for complete repair and restocking of limpets (best to bring over 48 per trip).
  6. Repeat process for sample #2.
I would imagine this is much easier with a caustic sink launcher. But in a stroke of pure sadism, FDev has decided to obtain a caustic sink launcher, one must float endlessly through a massic cloud of caustic acid to farm the material. Sort of like placing a fire extinguisher inside the rim of an active volcano.

I agree the payout on these should be much higher. I would say something along 20,000,000+ per sample, given how much effort and danger is required to obain them. So far I think I have spent about 30,000,000+ in ship rebuys in order to learn how to do this process. I would pay 50,000,000 per unit if they were readily available in a commodity market, which I suggest become an option for those who don't have hours to spend on this brutal farming loop.

Having said all that, perhaps I just suck at this, in which case, I'm desperately seeking advice from those who are better at this process than I am.

Minor wrinkle: Have a key bound to "next sub-target" and you can avoid using the left panel.

Thanks for the suggestion. I believe I have that already bound (I use it in CZs). I am not sure if it worked inside the maelstrom, but I'll check that out. If so, it would be helpful, and you have my gratitude.
