50% Pathfinder to Elite?

I'd like to head out on one rather large trip and come back Elite. I got an ADS of course, but I will only be honking systems 99% of the time. What kind of round trip am I looking at?

Depends how fast your system map loads. Instead of jonking, in order to make a lot of money you need to find a good balance between jonking and scanning everything. It is always worth scanning metal riches, as they make a bunch of money and are usually within scanning distance from the star. Terraformables are good to pick up on- they will usually be around 500-1500 ls away from a G,F or A class star, and will usually have grey clouds (not all the time, although they are worth scanning anyways)
ELW's, WW's, AW's always scan unless they are reeaaaaaally far from the main star.
Head to neutron stars and black holes
Ignore all icy bodies, and most gas giants

Go wherever you want to go! You need approximately 160 million credits to get to Elite from exploration, I generally make about 1-2 million per kly so just fly to wherever seems interesting, and always check your system map (except for brown dwarves. They always suck :p)

Take DSS too.

At some point you'll be bored to just honk(scan star)-scoop-jump, and willing to scan some planets & neutron stars & black holes too.

Pathfinder 50% - how much credits is that (earned by exploration)? 20 million? 40 million?
A bit over 10 million earned - you'd need about 15000 honk(scan star)-scoop-jumps (IIRC the average earning is about 10000 Cr per system that way).

50% pathfinder means you've earnt about 10-15 million from exploration. You need another 150 million to hit elite.

I went to beagle point mostly only stopping for ELW, Amonias, pretty WW, NS, BH. 8000 jumps made 115 million took nearly 4 months.

I still always check them. One day one will be interesting.

I found a T-class dwarf recently with just a single planet orbiting it some 18K LS away which turned out to be a High Metal Content world rather than an ice world. That's about as interesting as they get... unless L-Class counts as brown dwarf? I am still hunting for a solitary L-class with an Earth-Like World. They do exist, but I've spent a lot of time on this and nothing yet - but it has led me to find some mildly interesting systems around L-class stars.

am I the only one that thinks the rank progression for exploration should have used something other than the (generally low) payouts for scans? something like number of systems visited, distance travelled from your starting point or something like that?

All Elite Ranks are grindy but the Explorer one seems to be the most grindy one by far - unfortunately

I would like to thank everybody for their input, but..

.. my priorities have suddenly shifted. :-/

it has taken me nearly 8 months to get to BP

lol

totally agree maybe rarity of objects etc and maybe a multiplier for range from civilisation?

I like that idea, essentially the further out you go the higher a base multiplier is applied to your scan of a system. That would be a cool thing (and could possibly spark new interest in exploration)

it doesn't need ot be massive amounts but something to make it worthwhile heading out. i also think that we should be able to ditch modules and fuel to increase jump range. i have heatsink modules that are useless now as they cannot be recharged but i could have done with the weight reduction for jump range.

i don't want to dumb down exploring in anyway but it should be more flexible in some instances

if your just strangling the goose when you enter the system you need to jump 15,000 times give or take 10%

lets times that by an average 20 ly jump range your looking at going 300,000LY or... just head to beagle point and back TWICE then head to Sag A and back while strangling the goose and you will be very close to elite.

if you have a better jump range then you need to go further!

"strangling the goose..." LOL, love it :D :D

But yeah, your example shows it seems to be unbalanced compared to the other ranks, isn't it? It just seems like it's OTT.

I wonder how many Elite Explorers there actually are (and how many managed to preserve their sanity) :D :D :D

i always look at the systems and see whats worth scanning at times if i am in a good rhythm i won't stop unless it is something worth it but i usually always scan whats there (of any worth)

Yeah, L, T and Y are all brown dwarves.

According to Inara there are;

Elite Traders 9.61%
Elite Combat 6.16%
Elite Explorers 2.76%
Elite CQC 0.10%

Insanity is another thing [noob] the void does things to you.

although... the credits are fine we dont want the riff raff out exploring with us :)

Don't worry... get and Advanced Discovery Scanner. From time to time there is someone who start a thread claiming that scanner is unfair and you can make money very fast and should be limited in a way you need to find planets usin parallax.

[/sarcasm]

Thanks for the effort, 2,76% is not much - lots of kudos to those explorers. That said, I am tootling around Jaques at the moment, will probably head off to Beagle point and then loop back to Sag A on my looong trip back to the Bubble. So who knows, I may reach it yet ;)Exploring is good fun though, I like to break up the monotony of it by taking breakes scooting around rocky worlds at high speeds in my SRV :DwhEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE *thump*

Best way for me was Neutron farming (sticking your name on all undiscovered ones) - I did a bit during a trip to Sag A*, via the scenic route and I came back with about 70M CR - couple of months out in the black I think, still not quite recovered my sanity, the black just creeps in and kinda stays there, lurking...

Still not found the point in my career to do the other half to Elite, been working on an explorer'conda build to do that but got side tracked , oh look a squirrel !
