5000 LY for Palin, Destination Recommendations

I already unlocked the Guardian stuff I am most interested in and have a hard time thinking I will ever be motivated to sit through that Borefest to unlock the rest. Easily the worst "gameplay" I've encountered in ED, but that is another topic.

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. I appreciate the options!

Take a long distance passenger mission, preferably with a wanted criminal onboard. It makes the return trip more interesting.

There are a lot of asteroid bases which are just over 5klys away, head out there honing and scanning anything interesting. I'd personally recommend Jellyfish Sector FB-X c1-5 as it's right in the middle of a very pretty nebula and you can sell all your data right there and take your time to come back.

Some decent music is a must a well.

Sounds like a good destination. I was gonna skip on honking as I plan on suiciding my way back home, but this changes things . . . thanks!

5000,01 LY in one single direction, plotting a neutron route. With a cheap ship. Then self-destruct :D

Yeah I've never understood that, all other exploration rewards require you to fly out thousands of ly's and then if you get destroyed you lose everything, so there is no evidence you have been there at all, but with the 5kly you just need to fly out and not bring back any evidence you ever did it. Never mind me, just an explorer grumbling, at least it reduces the pain of them that hates jumping long distances, but I reckon we should have to retrun with a scan of a system 5kly away to prove we were there.....3....2....1....ATTACK!

:D:eek:

If you haven't done Guardian FSD booster yet, then no brainer is get ~900-1000 LY of your Palin by going to Synuefe NL-N C23-4 , planet B 3

I barely skimmed the how-to guide on shooting/charging up the orbs, ignored the player painted map, and just drove around in the hated SRV for ~1 hour to do the blueprint + power cells/components farming. Hate every aspect of the Guardian unlock / farming but love the FSD bosoter. Spend 1-2 hours getting there and doing it on way for Palin unlock if don't have FSD booster already.

Personally, I'd follow advice from other player above ^^ - after you get 5k + 1LY, self destruct and take easy way home.

Of course if you travel the wrong direction self destructing can actually take you further away if the nearest station is further out, then you need to purchase a cheap sidey, if the base has a shipyard, self destruct and take the starter system sidey option and leave your old ship far, far away.

I only self destruct if way, way out there.....at a system it is point towards station and ......FULL....RAMMING....SPEED!!!

Any recommendations on destinations? I'm not much of an explorer myself, but might as well head somewhere nice lookin' while I'm at it right? If I can get tipped off to somewhere decent, I won't fly aimlessly until I tip over 5000.

How I did it in one evening:

Fitted a DBX for maximum range, fitted an Advanced Discovery Scanner, added an AFMU, made sure I had the appropriate materials to fuel the AFMU then turned the AFMU off.
(An AFMU continually repairs and uses materials if you do not disable the AFMU when not using it).

Chose a direction at random, picked a system on the GalMaP that was over 5000 LY from my system of origin.
Used the "Neutron Superhighway" route plotter (Elite Dangerous Neutron Router): https://www.spansh.co.uk/plotter to plot a route to my destination system over 5000 LY away.

Flew the route, HONKing every system to collect a ton of exploration data and stopping when the FSD started to malfunction, activating the AFMU and repairing the FSD module, then disabling the AFMU.
(I had to do this 5 or 6 times, make sure you have the materials!).
On reaching my destination I checked "statistics" in panel #3 to make sure I had traveled more than 5000 LY from my system of origin.
I had not gone 5000 LY from my system of origin so I made a couple more jumps and received the invitation from Professor Palin in my COMMS panel.
Plotted a route to Maia using the Neutron Superhighway, followed the route back to Maia, paid a visit to Professor Palin and as a bonus, turned in a bunch of exploration data.

I did all this in about 5 hours but was not in any particular hurry. o7

PS: I took an SRV with me in case I had to scrounge materials for the AFMU. o7

I recommend that your first 1000LY take you to the guardian ruins, then spend a day there getting the mats you'll need for the guardian FSD booster. Then return to the bubble, unlock the booster and use it build yourself something with very long legs. Then do the remaining 4000LY in an easy weekend.

One thing: the 5000LY is distance from where you started (probably LHS 3447), so don't wander aimlessly. You need to head out in a straight line.

What did I do? I wanted to see what the far side of Barnard's loop (the purple eye looking thing) looks like, so I went and looked.

I went to the Monkey Head nebula. This was like 8 months ago before we had guardian fsd boosters. I specced my Asp for 51 LY jumps. Took me awhile as I’ve never tried the neutron jump thing, nor overcharging my fsd. But I found it fun discovering some planets. I bookmarked an earthlike world that has my name as first to discover. Anyway, go make the best of the adventure!

Here's a suggestion, one I took myself:

Pick your stating station.
Throw in a single passenger cabin.
Browse the Passenger Lounge for a passenger mission going out at least 5k ly or more.
Fly there.
Scan whatever they want your to scan.
Return them whence they came.
Profit (long range trips usually pay pretty darn well, mine was 20m)
Get the credit for the trip for Palin as well.

Two birds, one stone, dead.

I went to the rosette nebula via the Witchhead (to avoid permit lock zone if you try to fly straight from sol to rosette), was perfect, got my name on loads of stuff and one earth-like.

if you want to see some stuff along the way i would recommend;

LBN 623 nebula - Great pink nebula backdrop

Veil East Nebula - blue hues and generally a great view

Veil West Nebula - absolutely stunning, one of my favorite nebula's

Sadr Region (Huge central star here)

Pelican and North America Nebula

Cave Nebula

Elephants Trunk Nebula

NGC 7822 - this has a lot of very bright stars in a line with multiple black holes orbiting several of them and several other black holes

at this point you will have done 5,000KLY - Then you have a few choices.

You can head 2000ly further away either crossing to the next arm or you can extend your trip to 7000ly each way by going either to the Bubble nebula or the Heart & Soul Nebulas.
You will see some amazing sites, the stop offs are quite short (so you see something quite often) and you will have done enough to unlock palin!

of course you could just jump into the black continually until you hit 5kly then self destruct.... you could also stick pins in your eyes, equally unpleasant

I asked a similar question a while ago and got some suggestions from helpful cmdr's here
In the end I went to NGC7822 then faffed about for a bit, but planning a bigger journey based on my experience once the new exploration mechanics appear in the main game.

AFMU uses Ammo, most A class variants have more than enough for 10 even 20kly of neutron jumping repairs, also the AFMU only uses ammo when repairing and can only repair modules while they are switched "off" so dont click repair in SC otherwise you will emergency drop, you have to manually re-activate modules once repaired too.

most of us keep the AMFU switched off to save power and use lighter powerplants for better range, but if you have the power keeping them on does not do any harm or consume ammo / materials.
