"Second star to the right and straight on 'til morning."
There are a lot of asteroid bases which are just over 5klys away, head out there honing and scanning anything interesting. I'd personally recommend Jellyfish Sector FB-X c1-5 as it's right in the middle of a very pretty nebula and you can sell all your data right there and take your time to come back.
Some decent music is a must a well.

Jellyfish Nebula. It's 70 light years across and about 5,000 light years from Sol. Nearby is the star Eta Geminorum
5000,01 LY in one single direction, plotting a neutron route. With a cheap ship. Then self-destruct![]()
Personally, I'd follow advice from other player above ^^ - after you get 5k + 1LY, self destruct and take easy way home.
Of course if you travel the wrong direction self destructing can actually take you further away if the nearest station is further out, then you need to purchase a cheap sidey, if the base has a shipyard, self destruct and take the starter system sidey option and leave your old ship far, far away.
Any recommendations on destinations? I'm not much of an explorer myself, but might as well head somewhere nice lookin' while I'm at it right? If I can get tipped off to somewhere decent, I won't fly aimlessly until I tip over 5000.

How I did it in one evening:
Fitted a DBX for maximum range, fitted an Advanced Discovery Scanner, added an AFMU, made sure I had the appropriate materials to fuel the AFMU then turned the AFMU off.
(An AFMU continually repairs and uses materials if you do not disable the AFMU when not using it).
Chose a direction at random, picked a system on the GalMaP that was over 5000 LY from my system of origin.
Used the "Neutron Superhighway" route plotter (Elite Dangerous Neutron Router): https://www.spansh.co.uk/plotter to plot a route to my destination system over 5000 LY away.
Flew the route, HONKing every system to collect a ton of exploration data and stopping when the FSD started to malfunction, activating the AFMU and repairing the FSD module, then disabling the AFMU.
(I had to do this 5 or 6 times, make sure you have the materials!).
On reaching my destination I checked "statistics" in panel #3 to make sure I had traveled more than 5000 LY from my system of origin.
I had not gone 5000 LY from my system of origin so I made a couple more jumps and received the invitation from Professor Palin in my COMMS panel.
Plotted a route to Maia using the Neutron Superhighway, followed the route back to Maia, paid a visit to Professor Palin and as a bonus, turned in a bunch of exploration data.
I did all this in about 5 hours but was not in any particular hurry. o7
PS: I took an SRV with me in case I had to scrounge materials for the AFMU. o7
