64bit woes

I realise my PC is ... well basic with on board graphics, but I just want to try to understand why the 64bit version of the game does not work at all on my 64bit PC.

It can't even run the opening screen. After a few minutes of blank screen it says I don't meet the min requirements of the game, but the min requirements seem to be the same according to frontier store - so what's so different?

Your onboard video is the most likely problem, depending on what it is, it may not have support for DX11 Compute Shader 5.0, what vidchip is it, do you know?

Do you not have a dedicated GPU? if not I understand why you can't run the game. A onboard graphic card, mostly included in the CPU are not enough to run the game.

Could you list your system?

It is no doubt missing DX11 that's causing the issue. If the card supports DX11 make sure you've updated your GPU drivers and also although may seem silly, have you got 64bit OS installed.

I was able to run Elite Dangerous before the update. I have Intel HD Graphics 2000.
Just tried Elite Dangerous 32bit and that does not even open the window now!
dxdiag seems to show DX11 is installed.
I do have 64bit windows, yes :)

Disagree, it runs fine on an AMD A10-7300 laptop.
With the caveat that it will run fine with reduced resolution and graphics settings, then yes. However, the AMD A10-7300 has a max resolution of 1366 x 768 and R6 graphics. What's your FPS running Elite? Hit CTRL + F when playing and post a screenie.

And even if you get decent FPS on yours, not all laptops are not designed for gaming levels of GPU performance. In fact, few are. Don't give people the impression you're getting 174 FPS with 1080 res because my definiton of "fine" as someone who builds gaming PC's and yours will differ.

Hi Tod, I'm assuming you have a desktop PC. if you are considering getting a dedicated GPU then I can highly recommend Asus for reliability and the Nvidia chip because as you may know, AMD have ED supercruise issues with their drivers at the moment. Something like the GTX 750 Ti with 2GB for less that £95 all in from Amazon would run the game pretty well and of course it is DX11 compatible. You should see a huge difference in performance compared to your on board graphics. I'm not sure what your budget is but for less than £100 this is hard to beat IMHO.

Naturally anything up from this is even better but I would think you could get away with a GT 740 if funds are tight, although I would recommend you get a minimum of 2GB GPU memory. BTW I have no connection with any of the named companies I'm just sharing my experiences from 33 years of gaming! Hopefully Santa will be extra generous next week!

Just to ask an obvious question - you are running a 64bit version of windows?

I theory it shouldn't be an install option if not, but may be worth a check.

As someone who just installed ED on a laptop (Intel HD4000 graphics), the Horizons client doesn't run (usually crashes in the Compute Shader setup, although I once got it as far as the main menu), but the 64-bit ED client does work fine(*). Looks like it's mainly the compute shaders which are only needed for EDH that's the problem, at least on this particular integrated GPU.

(*)For a certain definition of "fine". This install is purely to be able to at least watch the departure of the Distant Worlds expedition while I'm overseas; I'm under no illusions that this will allow me to play.

If you install Horizons the 32bit launch stops working. It shows and you can press play but it doesn't run and just cycles back to play.

Thanks for everyone's advice.
I nipped to Maplins and got a cheap ASUS NVIDIA GEFORCE GT 610 as it works with directx 11 and horizons works now - and everything looks much better than it did before too, so I am happy.

"Fine" and 174 FPS are the same for people in the tech industry? Well, I'm happy with about 30 FPS, I admit I never checked. The game seems fluent to me, I do run into FPS issues occasionally, but that's probably because of a well-known bug with AMD drivers in supercruise.

Reduced graphics settings, yes. I run on High graphics details, Ultra choked out my system a lot, planets wouldn't load or became transparent etc. More than 1366 x 768 are not possible on my laptop display anyway, but I can run the game on higher resolution via HDMI, so not sure where you came up with that "max resolution" thing.
