A confession from a remorseful pirate.

Thanks.. but nah. Need a ship that can mass lock. I don't care about the operating costs.

Then a clipper. ASPs are good but you can't run when the bounty hunters gang up on you.

But I'm not kidding--cobra, try it! Masslock is nice but a cobra will save your ass more times than not. And you can be extremely profitable in one. It forces you to hone your raw skills rather than using the masslock luxury.

So "piracy" in Elite dangerous isn't about money and pirates still wonder why traders prefer to get blown up? It's not about the money. It's not about the money for the "pirate" and it's not about the money for the trader. Simple. It's about forcing your will onto others and that other not to allow it. Really simple.

And piracy is in almost all cases completely risk free. What risks? That a T-6 is able to reduce the shields of your Clipper or FDL or Python to 99% before he gets blown up?

FD sold the game on the premise of being a pirate or a smuggler and didn't even bother to list trader on their sale page ;)

Shooting the same npcs around the same asteroids might be fun for some people but for others we want the player interaction that was promised to us.

I pirate because it's fun, you have all sorts of crazy encounters and meet people for good or for bad. I traded for like 400 hours and was only pirated a few times but each time was a good experience mainly because I knew when to run and when to fight.

FD need to work on the game mechanics for piracy for both traders and pirates but even if they are a bit broken (combat logging, interdiction cooldown, high wake jumps, broken black market system) I'm still going to pirate and I'm still going to kill traders that don't comply to my demands.

I killed two T9 players last night filled with palladium, one thought he could run and then when his drives were shot out though that silent running would save him and when it didn't he self destructed. The other thought they could use mines and by the time they stopped I had a malfunctioning burst laser through heat damage from shooting him that it ended up stripping the last 5% of his hull before I could put my weapons away. The next time I interdicted him he stopped straight away. Do I feel bad? No. I used to trade myself and if I was in a T9 I wouldn't risk death for a few t of palladium that I could make back profit wise in another run.

The game is all about risk. You can run if you think 20t of palladium is too much to drop for a pirate vs your rebuy on a T9 and full hold of cargo but you can't complain about it after the fact as it's part of the game. If you want to play open without being pirated you don't use thrudds or slopeys and you find your own trade data on systems outside the main systems and grind away in peace or you go to solo or group. Atleast most player pirates message you with demands before shooting.

To the OP: +1 to you. Liked your story and your style. I'm glad to see that some pirates still have some human conscience. Even if i'm a BH i would say keep up the good job.

I have repped you too much.. wont let me anymore. I agree on all accounts.

I think the trader that should be LEAST likely to test his skills by running, would be a T9. I don't think pirates (correct me if im wrong, I'm new :D ) Don't really ask for more than ... 10, 20, or 30 tones? I think somewhere around 30 the canisters start blowing up on their own (takes too much time to scoop). So in a T9, making 700k in a single run. If you only made 600 that run... so be-it, it's no big deal. The bigger the trader, the less of a hit a pirate can make. Maybe that 30 tones will go to 50+ with drones in the next patch though... so T9s look out ;)

I can scoop 30-40t before it disappears, if I'm under fire by police I can do about 20t due to my ship build.

I normally ask for 20 - 30t depending on the player and what they're carrying as I know how much of a hit a trader will take from trading myself and I don't like to be greedy. I'll also only try to hit the same player once every 24 hours.

The T9 that attacked my was one of the funniest encounters I've had but the T9 dropping mines meant that the amount of noise going on in my cockpit made me not hear the chat beep when he tried to surrender. Mines are atrocious against anything with shields it's the equivalent of taking a pea shooter to a tank.

As if piracy is to get paid. Trading and bounty hunting require a smaller skill set, lower risk, and have much, much higher cr/hour.

EDIT: Also, not killing the crew doesn't mean they didn't kill the captain and officer(s), which is still murder.

Your statement has inavertantly answered the very question that was raised. When you said "your romanticising of piracy is amusing" and followed up with this reply, you reinforced the point others were trying to make.

Piracy isn't about the money, it's about playing the noble scoundrel, the stereotypical pirate. that's why we do it, also, the skillset INvolved is as you rightly said, higher, once you master it, there's litterally nothing you can't turn your hand to.

After all, we are in a sandbox, doesn't one build castles in a sandbox? The most basic form of role play after all. ;)

We should still be able to earn a living from it. Some nights I don't even make my ammo costs :)
