A contribution about South American animals by regions

(This isn’t a wishlist)

While people is waiting news for the autumn DLC, I want to share this…

It is obvious that players want more South American animals in game, specially wildlife from the tropical rainforest (me included), because these ones are the most known animals in this part of the world. You can see this in the current distribution available of SA animals (Conservation Pack) in biomes, where fauna from tropical and grassland biomes are the majority:

Desert: 1Grassland: 9Tropical: 10Temperate: 6Taiga: 2Tundra: 1Aquatic: 6

Additionally, it is clear that fauna from other SA biomes are less required (Desert, Temperate, Taiga and Tundra), maybe because they are less known between the players and less frequent in North American and European zoos (part of them are present on South American zoos mainly). Personally I would like to see more animals from the Andes or the Patagonia, to have more biodiversity available in PZ.

For these reasons I decide to use a bit of my time to make these pictures to share you some SA animals from different regions, not just the tropical one, and spread biodiversity on the continent to you. Mainly I take animals from the meta-wishlist of @randomgoat and chose other ones that don’t appear there to complete the pictures. I also checked the IUCN Red List website to investigate a little in detail about the possible biomes to which they would belong if they were in game (you can disagree with me). In some cases, some species can live in more than one area (for example, Desert of the Pacific Coast + Andes or Andes + Patagonia) or even both South America and North America (for example, white-tailed deer, nine-banded armadillo, collared peccary).

Finally, I divided the South American regions as follows (arbitrarily of course):
  • Tropical Rainforest (yellow)
  • Tropical Savannah (orange)
  • Desert of the Pacific Coast (black)
  • The Andes (red)
  • The Patagonia (grey)

Would also love an Andes Skunk or Humboldt’s Hog Nosed Skunk, as well as Geoffroy’s Spider Monkey! These, as well as the Two Toed Sloth, Coati, Nine Banded Armadillo, Spectacled Bear, Humboldt’s Penguin and South American Sea Lion, would be top tier South American inclusions for me!

I love the layout of this thread. It's so through with the animals and the biomes from mid-post down. Love to see that kinda of thing here.

TIL there are some pretty funky-looking deer down in South America. Cool. Thanks for this post, it's very well done. I will say I think you missed two Cerrado animals, those being a tamandua and the giant armadillo.

Yeah, SA skunks could be good in game
I'm just learning there are three rhea species. Huh.

But basically yes. To all of this.
This genus of bird (Rhea) is curious, because these ostrich-like birds can live both warm and cold regions (Cerrado and Andes)

I appreciate that a moderator likes my pictures about South American biodiversity :)
South America is in my opinion the continent with the most amount of missing animals (perhaps after Africa from which I would like to see the same amount). What I miss in your lists is the Tamandua, a Spider Monkey and the Agouti. But nevertheless, thank you for your work 🙂.
Yes, we need more SA animals. Also, I added a pair of animals more.

Thank you! I added the southern tamandua and giant armadillo to complete a bit more my pictures
I'd want the Pampas pack, please

"Adios, pampa mía"
A Pampas Pack sounds great!

One other animal from South America I'd definitely love to see is the Northern helmeted curassow - an endangered montane rainforest species from Venezuela and Colombia that, certainly here in Europe, is the most commonly-kept of the curassows in captivity.

Another ground bird I would love is the giant wood rail, again quite commonly kept in zoos (I've certainly seen them on a couple of occasions) - they would represent the aquatic habitats found in South America's tropical savannahs and are lovely to watch.

Yeah, i'm from Argentina. I've seen both rhea species in the wild (they are pretty much everywhere in grasslands and the patagonian desert, even in the mountains) but i always thought there were only two species: the ñandú (greater rhea) and the choique (lesser rhea). Apparently the mountain one (puna rhea) is considered a separate species for some.

And this is another reason why i want them for the game! :D No SA section is complete without a rhea for me :)

Wait, do Spectacled Bears live in Tropical Rainforests? Like the same way Monkeys and Sloths do?

I thought they lived way higher, maybe on the border of tree line "higher". Places with sparse vegetation. The environment similar to those in background of the animals in "Andes" category.

Cloud forest is their main habitat i believe. They are kind of tropical-ish

Had no idea. Always thought they share their habitat with Llamas.

So if we were to get them in PZ, would their habitat needs be more similar to those of a Sun Bear?

Spectacled bears seem to have a fairly broad range of habitats - according to the IUCN they live in dry forests, tropical moist lowland and montane forests and shrublands and tropical high-altitude grassland. I'm not entirely certain how that would fit into the game's biome set - definitely tropical and grassland, possibly also temperate and maybe even desert.
Yes, the spectacled bear habitat includes both the border of tree line in the Eastern Andes, which is called paramo (a alpine tundra ecosystem, where also can live other animals like llamas and cougars), and the montane/cloud forest, which contains part of the amazonian flora and fauna at the eastern andean slopes (for example, jaguars, sloths, macaws, some species of monkeys and toucans, and other endimic animals and plants), apart of the fact that its clime can be both temperate or warm depending on the altitude.

According to the data from the IUCN website, I think if the spectacled bear were included into the game, it would fit into tropical, temperate and taiga biome. Personally, I don't agree with fitting this bear into grassland biome, because the paramo shrubland is located at the cold highlands, and this fits better with the characteristics of the alpine tundra ecosystem (in other words, with the taiga biome into the game).

Their habitat would be more similar to that of the Formosan Black Bear, but with the difference of south american plants (although the plants currently avaible for the South American temperate and taiga biomes are still few)

That was very detailed. Thanks for the clarification 👍
