A Diary On Attempting To Learn About Guardian Tech, Without Outside Help

Part 1.

I've decided I need guardian weapons and modules, because 'reasons'.
But I'm attempting this feat without any external knowledge, except what I may or may not remember from previous readings (which wasn't much at all, and probably not very accurate!)

Having almost zero knowledge of them, my first port of call was Galnet.
I open up Galnet and being scrolling.

Nothing.

...

Ok, so I vaguely remember something about the Meene system and Ram Tah.

I hop in my trusty DBX 'Enter Infinity II', and set off.

A short time later, I arrive in Meene. Not sure where to go from here, so I just fly to the engineer base, and land.

Nothing particularly interesting here. No missions, no information.
I upgrade my chaff and heatsink launchers, simply because I can. Lol

Vaguely remembering the details, I guess I need to dock elsewhere. Felice Dock?

I undock, and set course.
A few moments later, I land, and low and behold a message comes through.

"Commander CosmicSpacehead

My research into the alien ruins has yielded results of sorts. I have developed a way to decode the data from the Ancient sites"

..."the alien ruins"... "the ancient sites....?"
He's obviously been there, he must know where they are.

"Although I cannot specify the various combinations of objects and data types needed, my decoding system should help decipher the ancient data. The key is using the ancient objects with active obelisks to unlock it.

... Helpful.

"Please explore as many sites as you can find. If you find all the data entries, there is a bonus in it for you."

I can find? You mean to say, you have all this data, and don't know where they are?!

What the hell!

Maybe he put a marker of at least one site in my map.

No. He didn't. Great!
Only 400,000,000,000 systems they could be in.

But, I know there's a map filter for guardian civilization, so that's a start.

I set the filter and begin looking.
...
...
...
Found one!

Synuefe XR-H D11-102...

I have a system map available, so I've been there before.

No mention of guardian tech though. Got a feeling this is just that old puzzle!
Not flying back there again. I remember that place. It was horrible.

There's tech brokers... Maybe they know...

*Sets the filter to 'tech broker - guardian'*

And searching....

....still searching...

...more searching...

...and one in Diaguandri! 4 jumps back the way I came from... Yay!

I set course, and undock...

5 Minutes Later I arrive on Diaguandri...

I'll assume I need to land at Ray Gateway, seems that's the station for everything... Lol

And behold! There he is.

Hmm, what first... Let's look at the guardian FSD booster.

I need;

21 guardian power cells. Check!
24 focus crystals. Check!
1 guardian module blueprint segment... Nope.
21 guardian technology component... Nope.
And 8 HN Shock Mounts. Easy, but nope.

So where do I find these magical items? Any clues Mr Bradley of Ray Gateway?

Well I can't select any item on the list for more information... So that's helpful.
Bradley just says "find me stuff".

...

So. I'm basically back where I started. But at least I now know what I need, but still no clue where, or how to get it.

And that's all I have time for today...

And I have a feeling that was the easy part!

The adventure continues...

That's a lot of typing effort just to say 'can't find stuff in-game' - u trollin' FD about the lack of codex? Q4 buddy, Q4 ;)

Anything would help. A Codex, lovely!
A Galnet entry would be nice.
Even a tourist beacon to scan for more information. Being able to select each item on the list to see roughly how you get it.
An email? Text? Carrier pigeon? Message in a bottle?

Any of those is better than nothing. Lol

I've always thought the station bulletin board was wasted in regard to stuff like this.

It's ages since I've played it but, IIRC, Borderlands used to have a thing where every settlement had a "noticeboard" that you could look at and it'd provide you with various side-quests.

Seems like the station bulletin boards, in ED, could be used for a similar purpose.

I know they used to have little "unmarked quests" on them (things like newspaper articles reporting that a ship disappeared in some system or other) and I used to enjoy checking them out but they seem to have disappeared lately.
These days they're mostly just full of the "dry" stuff relating to bounties, crime and BGS.

Might be nice if the station BB had, perhaps, 2 tabs; one for the latest news in chronological order and a 2nd tab for "important information" which would let people know about stuff like Palin wanting folks to deliver Thargoid junk, Ram Tah wanting people to go look at stuff or Canonn inviting people to....
Well, the first 2, anyway.

The station BB is so full of pretty pointless stats, I actually forgot it exists and have just blanked it out. Lol

Good suggestion though. +1

FD could dedicate an entire quarterly update to better interactions with the story and NPC's. Currently both areas are a bit flat.

I was saying in another thread they should have the 'newly discovered Guardian locations' in Galnet - maybe weekly. Would help in this situation. Make Galnet Great Again.

For some strange reason, i think that FD version of codex probally offer same amount of help as galaxy map filter for guardian civilization does.

Did you look on the Civilizations tab in Galmap?

I went to the first place mentioned , turn that on an found a whole load of Guardian sites and ruins...

and by the way massive rep to you - I followed your guide to the ruins last year and had a ball. I managed to get all the blueprints I needed (not the new ones) looking for myself. Maybe I got lucky but it was the first time in game that I didn't have to give up searching and google it (other search engines are available)

Codex aside, this is why the Tip Off mechanic (in my opinion) absolutely must be used to say "Hey, so we heard that there is some sort of strange sighting in the XYZ system, possibly some sort of alien tech around. Could just be a hoax, go check it out!".

... and it may lead to just some ship, or a human outpost, or a wrecked Thargoid, or a Thargoid/Guardian structure. But whatever it is, it needs to have some value, whether that's expensive cargo, storyline leads or anything.

That way there's a sensible progression of "Get cozy with a faction, and share secrets".

Nice as a way to introduce people to alien stuff, lousy if you want to go unlock stuff at the broker "How do you get these components? Go SC around a system for a while, and look for a tip-off"

Tangentially: I wonder how tip-offs & SC missions are going to work with the new ADS - before you often got tip-offs when hanging around waiting for USS - if we now just hoover these up and are not hanging around there will be less chance for these to happen (and they're pretty rare as it is).

1. Why bother? Canonn has a hella map with all of the different ruins made up already. Why are you reinventing the wheel?

2. So we can still get Ram Tah's mission?

I think this is what I'm gonna do sometime soon... I'll have to go back over there and see if he's still hiring. I just unlocked him, but I don't think I landed in any other stations in Meene.... maybe that will do it... I already had plans to head over to the ruins to loot a bunch of guardian junk, but if I can get a fat payout for it too? Score!

Every piece of in-game "content" like this has been an epic fail on Frontier's part from day1.

"OOOOh the Codex is coming!!!"

Who cares? They have had every opportunity to EASILY signpost all of this stuff using the existing in-game information sources, and they have absolutely blown it. Every. Time. There is no reason to assume that the Codex will be any better. It'll be another one-and-done affair and we're still going to be looking everything up online or experiencing the game vicariously through YouTube. That's my prediction. Elite has absolutely failed as a piece of game design and the fact that none of this was fixed AGES ago (and it's easy to fix it's literally just text+empathy) is a testament to its absolute enduring commitment to squandered potential and irrelevance.

Elite: the game where every piece of new content is hidden behind the equivalent of an arcade game kill-screen.

If your primary goal is to "consume new content" as quickly as possible, I can understand why you would feel that way.

Part 2
Still attempting without outside help.

I've found more guardian sites, turns out I was looking about 500ly too close to the bubble, so no wonder I wasn't finding more systems!

I head out to something-23-something-other, and begin searching for the ruins. Turns out they show up on the nav panel, so that's handy.

I've got "ancient ruins" and "guardian site" on my nav panel. At least that part of the puzzle doesn't require much thought... Lol

I bring my DBX in for a flyby, and notice 2 CMDRs running around.

Brilliant, I can ask them for help!
It also appears they are under attack from those guardian cheese wedges. I have rockets. So I assist.

I land, and hop in my SRV, and say a friendly 'hello o7'.

... Nothing.

No 'thanks for the assist', no Comms what so ever.

So I just start trying to figure it out on my own. I scan some stuff, shoot some stuff.

Then out of nowhere "warning mothership under attack!"... "Mothership destroyed!"
Yes, my DBX is made of paper. Barely had time to open the menu to dismiss... Lol

So, these guys are hostile then. With just my pokey SRV Vs an Anaconda and T6, I just run, with very little in the way of a plan on what to do.

After doing more damage from hitting rocks, than being shot, I finally meet my demise at the hands of a harmless shieldless Anaconda and a mostly harmless T6. Lol

Annoyingly, I respawn back at Ray Gateway, some 1000ly away. Grr.

Time for revenge. Sweet sweet revenge.
I rename my DBX 'Enter Infinity III'. And fly to my battle ready Anaconda 'Pancake IV', which also happens to be outfitted to do various other things. But only has a 26ly jump range.

I set course for something-something-23-something system and... It's 40 jumps away...!

Almost 45 minutes later, I arrive in system, set full power to weapons, and pull off an awesome low altitude reentry to bring myself in above the guardian site at just 2km altitude.

Annnnnd no one's here....

So I fly to the next guardian site.

No one.

And the next.

No one.

I can't even get revenge right!

I decide to give up on my dreams of sweet sweet revenge, and get back to figuring out these bases.

I squeeze my Anaconda in to the tightest space I could find and deploy my SRV.

Then aimlessly drive around scanning stuff, and collecting random bits of alien tech again, still having no clue as to what I'm supposed to be doing.

At least I'm in my Anaconda now. I'm prepared for anything!

Except other players. And aliens. And flying home.
