A few animals that need renaming

There are a few species in the game which aren't specified to the subspecies that the game refers to them as, here are the ones that should be renamed:

  • African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer) renamed to Cape Buffalo
  • American Bison (Bison bison bison) renamed to American Plains Bison
  • Dhole (Cuon alpinus alpinus) renamed to Ussuri Dhole
  • Diamondback Terrapin (Malaclemys terrapin terrapin) renamed to Northern Diamondback Terrapin
  • Giant Forest Scorpion (Heterometrus swammerdami titanicus) renamed to Gigantometrus swammerdami referring to the species Giant Forest Scorpion rather the Asian Forest Scorpion which is the Asian Forest Scorpion
  • Galapagos Giant Tortoise (Chelonoidas nigra) renamed to Chelonoidas niger to be accurate to be the correct spelling of the name, which subspecies of the Galapagos Giant Tortoise we have, I don't know
  • I mean I know it doesn't have its common name, but the King Penguin is specifically Aptenodytes patagonicus patagonicus, which are the King Penguins found only in the South Atlantic Ocean, so maybe just generalise it to the King Penguin
  • Proboscis Monkey (Nasalis larvatus larvatus) renamed to Nasalis larvatus to just generalise the name
  • Timber Wolf (Canis lupus) renamed to Northeastern Wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis)
  • Rename the Pygmy Hippo to Pygmy Hippopotamus
  • Given we have both species of Hippopotamus, the Hippopotamus should be renamed to the Common Hippopotamus to match the zoopedia description
  • Grey Seal (Halichoerus grypus atlantica) renamed to Atlantic Grey Seal
  • Raccoon to Common Raccoon
  • A potential alternative name to a geographical name of the Indian Rhinoceros would be the Greater One-Horned Rhinoceros

I agree with the following:
  • Cape Buffalo: the zoopedia map shows this subspecies
  • American Plains Bison: the zoopedia description clarifies it is this subspecies
  • Northern Diamondback Terrapin: the zoopedia map shows this subspecies and the education board shows also shows the full scientific name with three words
  • Proboscis Monkey: its scientific name (Nasalis larvatus larvatus) should be changed to Nasalis larvatus to make it general
  • Pygmy Hippopotamus
  • Common Hippopotamus
  • King Penguin: its scientific name (Aptenodytes patagonicus patagonicus) should be changed to Aptenodytes patagonicus to make it general so that it matches the zoopedia map and contintents.

I do not agree with the following:
  • Dhole (Cuon alpinus alpinus) renamed to Ussuri Dhole its scientific name should be changed to just Cuon alpinus to make it general and match the zoopedia map, countries, biomes and education board
  • Grey Seal (Halichoerus grypus atlantica) renamed to Atlantic Grey Seal its scientific name should be changed to just Halichoerus grypus to make it general and match the zoopedia map, countries and education board

It depends:
  • Timber Wolf (Canis lupus) renamed to Northwestern Wolf (Canis lupus occidentalis) - only if we also get an Eurasian grey wolf.

You didn't mentioned:
  • The Eastern Blue Tongued Lizard: its scientific name (Tiliqua scincoides scincoides) should be changed to just Tiliqua scincoides to make it general and match the zoopedia map
  • The bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus) should be renamed to western bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus eurycerus) to match the zoopedia map.

Edited for clarification and better wording.

Personally for me, I like what the Localization Mod from @Narwhaler and @GiornoPizza has for English names:

  • African Buffalo -> Cape Buffalo
  • African Wild Dog -> African Painted Dog
  • American Bison -> American Plains Bison
  • Dhole -> Ussuri Dhole
  • Plains Zebra -> Grant's Zebra
  • Pronghorn Antelope -> Pronghorn
  • Raccoon -> Common Raccoon
  • Red-Necked Wallaby -> Bennett's Wallaby
  • Timber Wolf -> Northwestern Wolf
  • West African Lion -> African Lion

I don't think that changing normal names to scientific names would have any good effect.

Agreeing with the stuff above,

  • The Eastern Blue Tongued Lizard (Tiliqua scincoides scincoides) should be renamed to just Tiliqua scincoides to make it general and match the Zoopedia map
  • The bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus) should be renamed to western bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus eurycerus) to match the zoopedia map.
  • Rename the Pygmy Hippo to Pygmy Hippopotamus
Personal preference, Formosan Black Bear to Moon Bear.

There's only one species of hippopotamus. Wasn't it?

I agree with a lot of your suggestions. Generic-Sounding Names should be kept whenever possible.

  • American Plains Bison: the zoopedia description clarifies it is this subspecies
It could also just be Plains Bison. Much like Cape Buffalo, not African Cape Buffalo. But both versions (African Cape Buffalo/Cape Buffalo and American Plains Bison/Plains Bison) are correct though, for both animals.

  • Common Hippopotamus
  • Given we have both species of Hippopotamus, the Hippopotamus should be renamed to the Common Hippopotamus to match the zoopedia description
I don't think this is all that necessary. River/Common Hippos are usually called simply Hippopotamus in most contexts. It wouldn't be wrong to add "Common" or "River" to their name, but I don't see it as necessary.

  • The Eastern Blue Tongued Lizard: its scientific name (Tiliqua scincoides scincoides) should be changed to just Tiliqua scincoides to make it general and match the zoopedia map
In that case it would also have to be renamed to Common Blue-Tongued Lizard. An alternative solution is to fix the Map instead, if we want to keep the Name. Too many animals starting with "Common" could get boring in the Zoopedia List. Unless for species that are absolutely necessary. So I rather keep the names of Eastern Blue-Tongued Lizard and Hippopotamus the same.

I didn't mention the Blue-Tongue because the scientific name is true to the lizard we have in the game

The Bongo on the otherhand, shouldn't be renamed, but its distribution map changed, as the bongo we have is modelled after the Mountain Bongo, because male Lowland Bongos are bright orange, the same colour as females, just slightly larger and with larger horns, the male we have is distinctly darker, which is characteristic of the Mountain Bongo, so perhaps the Bongo we have should have its zoopedia changed entirely, to match the Mountain Bongo to be synonymous with the animal we have in the game.

Some people think that the model is specifically a northwestern wolf for some reason, rather than just being a species-level forest ecomorph.
I maybe don't have the eye for such type of detail, but there's no feature or lack there of on that wolf that couldn't make it Eurasian as well.

Making it NA local subspecies is taking away one animal from EU roster. We already have Arctic Wolf

I mean to avoid confusion, Frontier could add a selectable subspecies option, being able to select which subspecies you want, although it would remove the Arctic Wolf as a separate animal to use, it would still exist just as a subspecies of the current Gray Wolf, I mean if this were the case, the wolf could be generalised to Gray Wolf, with subspecies able to be chosen, Eurasian, North-Western, Mexican, Arctic and Great Plains.

That would definitely be the best option

Arctic wolves were mostly white and lived in colder and upper parts of Arctic. That would be the way to tell some grey wolf subspecies apart unless... Were there any other grey wolf subspecies that were mostly white?

Were there any mountain or lowland or both bongos in zoos?
