A Final Plea to Frontier for Longer Hairstyles

Ok, so look at it from the development side of things.

Short static hair is easy (well, easier). Its just a model. Long hair will clip through the spine if the head moves back. Realistic long hair takes more effort.

Adding code and models that support that takes more. Have FD got that code yet? Will they implement that code at some point? Those are the questions.

If they have that code and ability, then its likely long hair will be added sooner or later, so this petition is a waste of time.

If they don't, then this petition is a waste of time.

Best thing to do is simply wait and see if they say they have plans to add at some point, or whether it is coming. Well, maybe a dev will comment here about it or in the megathread, but otherwise, don't get your hopes up.

The "emotional" development side, Auntie...."emotional" :p

For me it's fine, but when you canopy breach you'd see your rebuy screen instantly... that would be fine :)

But what a good lookin' frozen corpse a person would be...

You can't just force me to like something I don't just because you're okay with it. Clearly this doesn't bother you. I'm trying to have a constructive discussion here. I'm not making demands. I'm asking for the devs to reconsider. Why is that such an issue for you?

The only person that is forcing anything around here is you. You are also making demands and indeed ultimatums.
Did you not say in a previous post you would quit the game Elite if you didn't get your way after spending 2 years on it?

Can I hold you to that?

I don't think it was done just because realism.

Long hair (and hair in general) is among the most difficult things to implement in 3D. Almost all games go for military cuts and short hairstyles not because developers like these, but because it is extremely hard to make long hairstyles look and behave realistically. Not to mention making it work in real-time without big performance drop. You may remember Lara's ponytail in last Tomb Raider installments - AFAIK, they used proprietary software to model it, and it was just for one ponytail (you couldn't change Lara's hairstyle).

Hi Momoka, I have a question for you.
Does the real life you put your hair up in a bun or back in a ponytail for those days when your hair simply gets in the way of having to do a particular job?

It's just that I imagine long hair would be a bad idea working around heavy machinery etc. especially within the Elite universe, also a bad idea with pop up helmets but that's been brought up many times already.

Frontier may include many buns and ponytail's for your Elite self.
I'm sure you'll find something to your liking and we've seen only a small range of hair types and styles so far.

Shoulder length hair won't cause an issue in any world. My hair in real life is down to my waist and I ride a motorcycle daily and it's not and has never been a problem. I've had more issues with the color I choose to dye my hair, which isn't a problem in Elite because pink is in the game. (which I'm shocked to see given that shade of pink is only on the Cobra MK III predator pack atm) This is still a video game. Realism needs to give way to fun every now and then. If they can go with something like telepresence which way more unbelievable that a woman with long hair putting on a helmet then is what I'm asking really that far out of line?

I can not support this petition without pics....pics please. For development reasons....of course. And science...hair physics...and such...

If there is no long hair then i quit, not really just maybe possibly. Op you have my full support my character commander Shardinara Cry is known for her long jet black hair so i will be struggling with the charator creator without it

Fdev give us long hair, and dont give me that health and safty bulls....t It sounds a bit silly that in a galaxy were i can fly my spacship into tha side of a station at several hundred km/h that helmets would be compulsary. If the helmets are not needed for breathing as we have cabin pressure so from a lore sense that is not it, long hair is a must also note powerplay people have long hair so dont skimp on this for players. Dont want another case of a great idea only going halfway for god sake do something properly for a change.

First off. That wasn't an ultimatum that was me saying I personally can't get over not having long hair because it would bother me to no end.

Secondly. You are being standoffish for no reason. I haven't been rude to you but clearly I wronged you somehow.

Finally. Don't you worry your pretty little head. If I'm that much of a bother to you then you'll be happy to know I'll be leaving these forums soon enough because I've had about all I can stand of comments like this.

While I sympathize about wishing to create a certain look for a player character, the devs were clear that the lack of long hair styles is because of the helmet.

Even if we excuse the internal consistency issue of needing an airtight seal in helmets for instances of pressure and oxygen loss, there is also the matter of texture and model clipping. The art team would necessarily have to model longer styles twice: one style for the helmet-less, flowing look and one for the stuffed-up-inside-the-helmet look.

Ok, here's one for the naysayers saying that shoulder length hair and space helmets don't mix:

Exhibit A: Commander Lewis from the film The Martian

And now Commander Lewis wearing a skull cap as part of her helmet:

Notice how through the wonders of grooming and science she is perfectly able to wear a skull tight cap and helmet without dying in the name of fashion :)

Question:

How did this person get all her hair into a space suit helmet or did she have a crew-cut and then grow it out in orbit?

Hair clipping can be got around by fixing the end to the shoulders, does not require any physics, when remlok activated the hair is disabled, no need for complex mechanics.

She had a team of specialists stuff it under a skullcap which she wore during ascent and descent. But she's not an Elite pilot, flying along on her own in a ship designed for combat where fancy lasers can cause sudden and catastrophic pressure loss and a canopy explosion necessitating a helmet quite suddenly collapsing around her head to save her life.
