A lore question

I like to think I'm semi knowledgeable about the different Elite factions, but one thing absolutely escapes me. What are the Utopians, the faction led by Simguru Pranav Antal? What do they believe and what do they stand for?

As a completely new addition to the Elite universe, there's not a whole lot of lore on Pranav Antal, but here are a couple of articles that might give you a feel for the power.

It's a strange combination of socially radical technology leaders mixed with guru-type spirituality. The implication is that they're trying to rebuild society from the ground up to be free of social ills. This involves tight restrictions on behaviour and encouraging buy-in to their philosophy. They're pretty authoritarian, with "Moral Enforcers" acting as a sort of brutal secret police to weed out dissent and outside influences.

Not a lot of official lore from FD, mostly just hints, but the Antal Reddit community (https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteAntal/) write a lot of fiction to flesh out the gaps. They tend to paint the group as high-minded and mostly peaceful hippies.

Great systems for smuggling I understand; because, practically everything is illegal.

Damn right. All black market prices are increased by 10% and a bunch of stuff is always illegal (even in Anarchy systems) including Narcotics, Progenitor Cells, Performance Enhancers and all slaves. It's a smuggler's paradise!

Basically, they are the Elite version of the brotherhood of steel- finding better technology etc
(From what I know anyway)
Maybe, but we're not the [insert insult here] that they are.

Indeed! Just ask Ben Ryder!

To be honest, I always saw them as an up-and-coming 34th century religion, flush with the growth and energy of a typical religion's early years. I would compare them to 4th-5th-century Christianity, or 7th-8th century Islam, or even Mormonism and Scientology of today. Of course, like all of those examples, there's a dark side to all that growth and devotion (hence the enforcers mentioned above).

I suspect that the exact beliefs of the Utopians are being kept deliberately fuzzy, perhaps to give we players the chance to fill in the blanks ourselves or (more likely, in my view) because Frontier itself hasn't really figured it out.

Criminals undergo mental cleansing for their own benefit and the benefit of society. There are and can be no dissidents in Utopia. Utopia transcends dissidents. Utopia transcends everything. Except Beige.
