A new Commander's experience after a few months // Kind of wondering where to go next? [Horizons]

Well over a year ago, one of my best friends casually mentioned that Elite Dangerous: Horizons was free for a very short time through Epic and I should grab it. So I did. I had a vague comprehension of what Elite Dangerous supposedly was; space trucking, combat and simulation. Hind-sight being 20/20 that really should have piqued my interest, but for whatever reason it didn't at the time. So I sat on the game for a year? Two? I don't even remember exactly. Around October of 2020 my brother and I built new PCs and I messed around with some of my old favorites, basking in my new PC glory. A few more months go by and I'm tired of most of my games and I think to myself, "I bet Elite Dangerous would look awesome on this monitor and my PC will run it like a beast now." (It did and it does, btw ) :geek: So I download elite, fire it up and hop in my sidewinder. My recollection of specifics at this point is very vague at best, but I remember feeling enthralled and basically hooked the first time I saw a starport and auto docked with it. I ran a few missions, racked up a few 10s of thousands of space bucks and said, yep, I'm heading for YouTube. I Immediately learned of road to riches, went back in and farmed up enough to get a hauler. I purchase the hauler and got my jump range up to 30 or so LY and hit the road.

This is where we get to basically what inspired me to make this post. Aside from the fact that I heard a lot of you veterans like hearing about plucky new commander's "falling in love with elite" stories and just wanting to share.

So I hit road to riches, I don't even know if I had enough credits to pay the insurance on my hauler at this point, but I'm hopping around, doing surface scans of every planet on the list, raking in the cheddar. Me and this game just clicked. I was listening to more research about the game while I was farming exploration data, but I was paying so much attention to the game, I probably only kept 10% of what I was hearing. So I end up making, in roughly my first three days playing elite, around 100m credits and I, with very little knowledge of what I was doing, despite what research I had heard, bought a Python just cus it looked good on paper and I remember hearing one video I had watched at that point refer to it as "glorious". Yep. First week I went Sidewinder > Hauler > Python and I am now still using said Python. Tbh, if the station I just happened to be at didn't sell Pythons I very well may have bought a different ship. Also, I wasn't specific about who I turned my data into, so I hadn't pushed one reputation at all yet, I still didn't know what I was doing at all but damn I just felt like a boss and like this game was made for me.

I go out, improperly equipped, and try core mining. It's a disaster. I forgot limpets (lol), I go back with limpets and I didn't have a pulse wave scanner, etc. I'm crashing into asteroids, having a hell of a time with the seismic charges, but eventually, I get my together and actually pull in a 34m credit haul. Then I discovered the commodity tools available online and my next haul I pull in something like 82m credits. Since then I just spent a lot of time trying to learn about everything; I've been exploring combat, working on engineering a little bit, started doing more passenger missions, embarrassed myself in an SRV and have destroyed my Python more times than I care to admit. Most recently, I have mostly started grinding my Federation rep just because I was already 3 or 4 ranks in and was already in Federation territory. I didn't really care about grinding rep early on, I was just farming credits or exploring or inefficiently participating in combat. I did buy a cobra just to see what the hype was about and to try out a smaller ship in combat but I sold it along with my hauler.

So here's my rub, I kinda don't know where to go next. I've been playing for about 6 months (but with a huge break of about 3 months) and I only own 3 ships, a DBX, my Python and the Fer-de-Lance I just bought. I wanna explore combat more obviously as I just bought a Fer-de-Lance, but I really feel like I need to get my engineering up to snuff before I even bother switching from my Python to the Fer-de-Lance. I didn't feel a whole lot better in it compared to my Python in combat, but I could definitely see where it could really shine if I properly outfit it.

I'm currently grinding federation ranks, currently warrant officer and have been running passenger and courier missions mostly. I have 6 engineers unlocked but not all of their upgrades. And after buying the Fer-de-Lance and doing some outfitting, I'm still sitting on 300m, which I know is nothing compared to most but idk, I was considering buying a Type-9 just because I've really been doing a lot of cargo missions lately and from what I can tell I can make more money in a Python over a Beluga amazingly by running bulk passenger missions. I also haven't tackled any illegal activity so far either, but I'm not opposed.

If anyone read all this and feels like helping a still very new commander out,

What are some ships cheaper than a Python that would be fun or worth checking out?

Is it worth it to get a Type-9? Should I just grind/save for a Cutter?

Without guardian tech or engineering, what are the best combat hardpoints for a Python or Fer-de-Lance? I do have the engineered frag cannon, double shot I believe it's called.

I also just pledged to Duvall, was kind of thinking I want those shields, good call? bad?

I've played for a couple of years, but decided lately to unlock all the engineers in the bubble, and then to head out to colonia. I don't know if it was a mistake to grind, but I maxed out on raw, manufactured and emissions (looking at youtube) and then started unlocking them. I must say that it has shown me a lot of aspects of the game that I didn't know or didn't know how to do well. Driving a SRV, hitting combat zones, mining, engineering ships, exploring, etc, etc..

Still grinding/relogging for mats is a bit mind numbing... But it made me a much better driver, and CZs has made me a better combat pilot.

So all in all I think it's been a good learning experience.

I figure that if/when I've done the engineers, I still have plenty to investigate with guardians, thargoids, odyssey, etc.

Sounds like you are having a great adventure and spreading your time between activities. FWIW, I have every ship I want including Cutter / Corvette but I still find myself using Python/AspX/FDL a lot. They are just more fun to fly and flying is the main activity in Elite. It looks like you might have skipped AspX. It's my taxi and has a great range without engineering. It has one of best cockpit views and is good all round ship for early/mid game. The T9 is a great hauler but you definitely need to be ready with a high-wake because it isn't outrunning anything. Or, cut back on storage and fight it out with a more defensive build.

Krait Mk2 or Krait Phantom will help you live out your Millennium Falcon dreams.

Alliance ships are fun too.

If you have Fed ranks their flying bricks are fun for combat, and the Imperial Courier and Clipper are the pinnacle of "fun to fly".

For hardpoints on a Python: All frags on top and a Rapid Fire pulse or Efficient beam on bottom. It's more of a tanky jouster than a dogfighter.

For a FDL: The meta is 1 PA in the Class 4 hardpoint, with 2 more PAs and 2 Rails with feedback cascade in the other hardpoints. But the FDL can use anything you're comfortable with.

When in doubt, you can literally run all Multicannons or all Frags on any ship in the game (with the right engineering mods).

there is so much you can now do, your just on the tip of the iceburg.

The Krait mkII makes a great fighter with a fighter pilot to keep you company.

keep up with the engineering of ship and weapons they will serve you well for the rest of the game.
remember lasers bring down shields multi cannons rip thru hull.

pick up some massacre pirate missions they pay good and fun to do, in res and has-res spots
( res spots safer because feds protect you kind of )

Go to Guardian sites to unlock Guardian fsd booster. Spooky place and fun to do

Go out to hip-36601 and fill up on raw materials at the crystalline shards fields.
Fleet Carriers take commanders out there weekly, find times on discord..”Fleet carriers owners club”
Remember to bring 1 or 2 srv’s

Visit cmdr Jameson’s crash site at hip 12099 1b great lore and spot to get data material.

I basically flipped a coin when I bought my FDL, it was either that or the Mk2.

I haven't unlocked the Multicannon engineer yet, I'm about to tonight if I decide to leave my mining spot (got a Fleet Carrier docked .13ls from my spot paying 350k for void opals, ik I can get more but the time it saves...) but I did randomly unlock Zacariah Nemo and have access to his frag cannon upgrades. I was literally just thinking about putting all double shot frags on my Python while I was mowing my lawn just now, no idea if that's bad or what. I was just gonna test it out lol, was also thinking the PA in the class 4 and just filling the rest out with double shot frags on the FDL. Thanks a lot for the reply!

Cool, thank you. Guardian FSD is near the top of my to do list for sure. And yeah, the MK2 I've been eyeing hard. I almost bought it instead of the FDL, idk why I went with the ship without the fighter bay, I guess the huge hardpoint. I just unlocked Marco Qwent last week and took a break from grinding engineering after that. I have gathered a ton of data too, I forgot to mention that in the post, I put a lot of miles on my DBX doing that. I didnt bother to look up every bit of info regarding engineering, I like figuring out on my own sometimes and I admittedly unlocked some rather useless engineers. But I'm also a completionist and would probably have wanted to do that anyway. Thanks again for the info.

Yeah, I skipped the Asp. I've since watched some videos and learned of it's awesomeness. It's a very beloved ship, my DBX was just really decked out by the time I learned of it, it has like 52 max jump range and I wanna say 45-46ish laden, I just never felt like it wasn't doing exactly what I needed it to do and then I had the Python for everything else lol. And yeah I was really happy with how the FDL flew when I tried it out after my Python, so far I continue to be happy with my choices in elite so far, thanks for the input :)

DBX is a great ship. I never bothered switching to AspX or Phantom. You can still get most of what you want for exploring on it.

That aside, a lot of your internals from the DBX can easily be switched over to the AspX or Phantom, including the frame shift drive.

Yeah that's a good point, was just thinking I might strip down the DBX and just trade it in. I just kinda have the itch to try out some more ships, I love my Python but it's basically all I've known.

I highly recommend planning a trip out to the crystal shard fields you can fill up all top level raw materials but selenium having full raw material will help with engineering.
you can catch a fleet carrier out on Friday and be back on Sunday, leaves weekly.
you can fill up on Polonimu,Ruthenium,Tellurium,Techtenium,Yttrium,Antimony
then you can trade down to fill up on the rest of the raw materials.

Easy Peasy

Hell yeah, that's a really good idea. How far is it to just go without a fleet carrier? Tbh I kind of have a lot of time on my hands right now.

Edit: nvm, I looked it up, the wiki says closest to Sol is 1500 Ly. That's not terrible.

Sounds like you had (and are hopefully having) an enjoyable time, for the most part! Nice.

As far as what to do...

Are you in squadron?
  • Do you enjoy powerplay (don't you salty vets laugh, it's possible)?
  • Do you enjoy BGS?
  • Do you enjoy PVP?
  • etc. Being in a squadron can be a great way to improve gameplay & meet strange new people

Seems like you're a ship person (aren't we all)...

What are some ships cheaper than a Python that would be fun or worth checking out?
- Eek, I like them all? Partial to the Eagle MK II, but honestly, I enjoy any ship...even (or especially) the sidewinder (great for short-range odyssey missions, btw ;-))

Is it worth it to get a Type-9?
  • I think so...I like mine at least?
  • It provides a nice stable way to get credits early on.
  • It'll help with CGs or any mission that requires lots of cargo

Should I grind/save for a Cutter?
- Up to you. I don't have one myself, but I hear it's a great ship.

I also just pledged to Duvall, was kind of thinking I want those shields, good call? bad?
- It's an...understandable decision? The prismatic shields are great, but I personally prefer bi-weave. Again, it just depends on your playstyle.

What are the best hardpoints for the python or fer-de-lance?
  • Depends on what you're trying to do. AX builds have different requirements than PVP which have different requirements from PVE, etc.
  • At the risk of sounding like a broken record, again, how you decide to allocate your hardpoints is up to you. You don't necessarily need a guide to determine this for you.
  • For instance, I prefer multi-cannons and missiles for conflict zones even though they might not be exactly meta.

I just spent an entire day grinding in a T9 to get the money to buy my Cutter. Got it all A-rated and partially engineered. I'm also new to the game. I can say with absolute certainty that the Cutter is worth every drop of blood you have to spill to get it.

And don't get hung up on owning "only" three ships. There's no prize for collecting them all and you can only fly one at a time. I have my Cutter for hauling and a Phantom for missions/bounty hunting. I also have a Clipper I'm not sure what to do with now that I have the Cutter. I don't currently feel the need for another ship.

Yeah, I hear you on the personal playstyle dictating your choices, which is probably one of the biggest reasons I really like elite. I never really completely resort to just flat out looking up what's "best" which is why I asked, being a meta slave is boring. Just kind of at least like knowing, or having the peace of mind, that you can have success with basically anything, which is what I've been doing, I basically have every different weapon stored atm because I gave them all a shot. I had a lot of success with 2 class 2 gimballed beam lasers, 2 class 3 gimballed multi-cannons and a class 3 seeker missile rack. Thanks for the detailed response, I didn't respond to everything but I read it all carefully and like your take on it.

Edit: I will add, I haven't tried much in regards to powerplay, I just pledged to someone to have access to prismatic shields. I've been too busy lol. This game makes me feel like I have a lot of crap I need to get done but never have time to do it all. And also, I've been using Bi-weave since my very first combat build lol, I wanted to try out making as heavy of a shield as possible and stack shield banks on my Python, some people love bi-weave and some people think the recharge time isn't worth it so I'm gonna try it out and see which one I prefer.
