A nice problem to have...

Well, it's not even a problem to be honest, more of a decision I'm umming and erring over so I thought I'd ask for opinions.

Last night I made Elite explorer rank (yay me!). I've set myself goals in ED, the first was to get a Cobra Mk III (which I realise now is not that difficult but it seemed a lofty goal back when I was a noob in a Sidewinder) the second was to get to one of the Elite ranks and it's turned out I've leant more towards exploration so far so here I am.

The next goal is ...well, I have a couple I could go for... I want to visit Sol, so I could work towards that , getting the permit, etc, or I could just go for another Elite rank, which would probably be combat as that's my next most advanced one.

Now, the nice side effects of making Elite are: 1) access to all the ships and modules at Jameson Memorial & 2) all that exploring means I now have just over 370 million credits in the bank. So I think I deserve a reward for all my hard work in the shape of a new ship. :D

Should I go for a combat ship and another Elite rank? (I don't do multi-player so combat would be PvE) Or should I do some Federation ranking so I can visit Sol - and what would be the best ship for that? ...or is there one that would work for both?

My current fleet is small, just my starter Sidey, my Cobra (set up as a general purpose RES-bounty-hunting/cargo mission ship) and my Asp X (set up for exploring) so there are lots of untouched ships out there for me to choose from.

What do you think?

First of all - Right On, Commander! for the Elite rank :D

If you go for a combat ship your 370M might not be enough. Combat ships get expensive.

Go work for the Feds. As you gain rank you'll gain credits. Eventually you'll get into Sol and might get access to Federal Corvette at the same time (I honestly cant recall the rank requirements for both; I had Sol access from being a KS backer and got top Fed rank before the Corvette was a thing.)

You may also have saved enough money by that point to actually afford a combat ship :)

Right on, commander.

Now, why not working on your Sol permit WHILE going for the other two Elite ranks? :)
Find yourself a nice Fed system and bounty hunt, trade and do missions for them. You'll have all three in no time.

best multi purpose mission runner for grinding fed/imp rep is the Python by far...

I've got every rank (triple elite, king and admiral), every engineer unlocked and 2 billion credits only using a Sidewinder, so it's not important which ship you use. When you use a small ship, you have to spend more time figuring out how to get what you want, like solving puzzles. Ultimately, everything is easy when you've figured it out.

Small ships are definitely more fun and make the various activities more interesting, but it's also satisying to teach the NPCs a lesson by blitzing them in your invincible fully-engineered Corvette.

If you want to give combat a go, go and get a Vulture and do a bit of RES farming. Fill it with MRPs.

The engineers are pretty well designed to get you to try every activity, so why not just work your way through getting them all unlocked. That should keep you busy for a bit.It teaches you a lot about the game, though the RNG can make it boring or frustrating to collect some of the stuff you need.

Congrats Cmdr. on hitting elite rank. o7

Just do whatever one you feel like as others have/will say.
When you get tired of doing one, jump to the other.
Getting the Sol permit will seem very quick compared to another elite rank.

Running missions for the feds in a multi-roll ship will allow you to work at that elite combat rank at the same time. :D

Really? A sidewinder? How much trading time did that take?

Congrats.

SOL is nice to see, but it won't take you very long to unlock it. A few hours at most.

So that's not a long-term goal.

So I guess it'd be the combat rank you'd be going for next :)

Congrats.

I currently have 4 goals left in Elite although I will think of more.

1: Get Triple Elite currently have 2 out of 3 but got combat left to do.

2: Circumnavigate the galaxy atleast once, last time I attempted it I got dragged of to help a friend get back in to the game and didn't complete it, I managed a quarter way round.

3: Pay off my almost 900M Cr fine at Robigo and also have a 1B Cr in free "cash"

4: Hit max rank with Emp and Fed

I have been to Colonia, Sag A* and Beagle Point, I have no real interest in the Thargoids at the moment and the next thing I intend to do is buy an Oculus Rift and go exploring again.

Get the permit if you want to grind Fed faction for ships, Sol is disappointing though so don't expect too much.

I'd get the Python next, if you really want a dedicated combat ship maybe get something like a Vulture, iCourier, FGS, etc. later, you'll have enough cash very quickly with a Python. Before long you'll be thinking about an Anaconda.

Thanks folks. Many good points.

Yes, going for the Sol permit/Fed ranks would also work towards the other Elite ranks at the same time, wouldn't it? Hadn't really considered that because exploring is such a singularly focused and solitary activity and the way I was progressing through the ranks it suddenly dawned on me at one point that the Elite rank was within grasp much earlier than I'd expected it might be. I think that then made me think about the other ranks in the same way as individual goals when they actually can come together as part of other ongoing activity, which is not really the case with exploration.

Perhaps I'll take a little 'rest break' to get the Sol, permit - I've heard it can be disappointing, but I have memories of Sol system in Frontier: Elite 2 and I do want to check it out in ED.

Maybe I'll hold off on the new ship for a while and try it in my Cobra, I do love that ship.

...or maybe I'll get a Python. Hmmm....

Since you asked... I would say - buy yourself a Beluga.
It's a marvelous ship, capable of many things, from Passengers and Quiet Freight to Bounty Hunting. It handles like a dream, clogs Station drains worse than waist-length hair, and makes a great long-range ship, as it has the largest fuel tank available.

o7 Congratz on making elite!

Sol shouldn't take too long to unlock....data missions for fed aligned factions are your friend here.

Don't listen to the naysayers - 370m will buy you a very nice and capable combat ship (and then some).

If you want to start small then a Viper mk III might be worth a look and it's great starter ship for learning combat. Jump into a RES site or Combat zone and see how it feels, learn the ropes etc...The rebuy is fairly small so any mistakes will not be too costly.

If you feel you want more bite try a Vulture...another great combat ship and not too pricey or if you are feeling flush the FDL, lovely ship, fast, agile with plenty of hard points but it is expensive to buy and fully kit.

If you want to try a bit of everything then the Python would be a great purchase and well within your price range.

There are a number of excellent combat ships the OP could buy and outfit for a fraction of 370m - Vipers, DBS, Vulture, FAS, FDL....the corvette is not the only combat ship in the game

This is good advice. It will help you to find out what other activities you enjoy.

And Right on Commander, or course ;)
