A question about field of view

Hello guys, a weird question for you.

I've been playing ED on a laptop for years, just switched back to a 17 inch screen, 1920x1080. 50/60 cm off my face.
What would be the most "natural" field of view for you ? For some reason, I'm never satisfied with it, I feel it's too restrained, the physical panels of the cockpit are always in the way - but I don't feel like pushing it to the far edge either.

A good number of you would probably say "try all settings and see what's best for you" but it takes time to get used to this kind of thing before really knowing you don't have the right setup. Just gathering data, what do/would you use with a similar screen ?
Thanks.

If you think of the monitor as a window into the game world. You should use the narrowest setting possible due to the small screen. Possible means, I would prefer to have the HUD readable, not being cut. If you choose a too wide FOV, it will distort distances and scaling even more.

That's what I feel too, and for a time I really tried a low fov. But I just find myself headlooking all the time to catch all the details. Not practical at all... And yeah, that's also why full FOV is a no-go for me. I feel like everything is too small, too far.

Triple screen or VR is the only way to remedy the situation, but both in not perfect either for this game.

Buy an Oculus Go VR headset and enjoy.

Oculous Go Doesn't connect to computers, so that won't do any good.

I've pre-ordered my Oculous Rift S, though; very excited!

I also feel unsatisfied with the view, mostly because I don't currently have a non-mouse based headlook method. When flying around and changing speed and direction the camera zoom and shift will often cut off parts of the HUD. Like sometimes I'm in a tight turn and want to see that my throttle moves are matching what I want them to match.
FWIW, My FOV slider is two notches higher than the default, neutral position. I don't know exactly what that correlates to in degrees. I'm assuming the default was like 75 and I'm around 85 now. I'm using a 32" TV as my computer monitor; about arms reach away. At that level it does bend things at the corners a little...

But like I say, I knew I wanted to get a HMD and now I'm just waiting for it to arrive. So I'm letting it go until then.

I read a thread that you can use it in this game and FDev has a download on their site for it- I am going to try it soon(have one).
And all you have to do is in controls set the output to the vr.

That'll be interesting since they specifically say it doesn't work with a computer. I figured it didn't have any cabling, since it's a self contained device like a mobile console. As I say, already ordered a rift S but, that would be interesting.

Also, this post you linked to seems to suggest that the GO will be less demanding of the computer video hardware than a wired HMD would be... but how can that be true?

What makes VR demanding is that it has to render the game (sort of) 2 times. One for each eye. (and kind of a third screen for the standard monitor output) So if the game is rendering to the headset without 3d, in that case I guess it shouldn't be any more demanding. Also means you're missing out on one of the main features of VR, but yeah.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.
I don't actually have my VR headset yet! I'm just reading this stuff.

Thats why I bought the Go- much cheaper mine was $249 and they have lowered after that, and I bought this HP17t because it offers more over MSI/ALIEN and the rest at about 1500 less.
Just got it a month or so ago- love it! With the SSD's it boots in about 5secs. Boots the game in about 4.

Or HP is coming out with a curved 21" gaming laptop shortly- if it's not already out.
21" is still pretty small, don't you think? I have already been playing on a 26" screen back in 2008. Even today with triple 27" screens or a single 31,5" screen, the world size is still not as large as it should be.

Well I'm playing in a truck not from home so my idea of big is well what can fit in here :D
