A question for all the PS4 CMDRs who also want PSVR support....

If it meant getting said PSVR support would you be willing to buy at the very least the core game again just as a VR version of the game?

I was just wondering as it seems that most of the time, to get VR support on a game developers will instead remake the game specifically for VR rather than just add the support to the currently existing game i.e. Superhot, Surgeon Simulator and Skyrim and charge at the very least the same as the original game if not a little more.

So with that being the case, if it meant you could almost literally climb into the cockpit of your ship would you be willing to shell out the cash and but the game again?

Dude, talking about Elite on PSVR is a huge waste of time. It will not happen, ever. Hell, NMS was designed from the ground up to run on PS4, has a MUCH better support for PS4 and for Pro (4k patch and all that), and yet it will not offer VR. And that's because PSVR is simply not powerful enough. If Hello games can't pull it off, Frontier -- with their track record of not giving 2 poops about PS4 optimization -- will definitely not make it happen.

Maybe (and I say maybe because by then Elite might be dead or they will decide not to port it) we'll see it on PS5 and on the new generation of PSVR.

To be fair with NMS they had to make the game worth playing first before VR was a thought. They have done that so there's nothing stopping them from doing VR in the future for PS4 plus PC.

PSVR runs Elite just fine. The PS4 (and Pro) are probably the limiting factors, and I agree PS5 is the only realistic option to get VR for us.

To OP: Yes, in a heartbeat.

Absolutely.

I normally play on the PSVR, even with the lower res 2D, it has a better feel than sitting in front of my TV. As a byproduct, this also frees up that TV for Mrs.4335.

And secondly, I was thinking of buying a second copy or a digital copy anyway. My son recently got his own PS4, and it would be nice to have him as a co-pilot. But having a disc only lets me run one instance.

I believe ED will be alive and well and have PSVR support on PS5. I worry more that they'll let it stagnate on PS4 because it's easier for them to throw more hardware at ED than it is to properly optimize it for the current consoles. See my * below.

Now to the OP's question, I'm with SynVision that it's never coming to PSVR PS4. What I'll be interested to see is if PS5 games will need to be repurchased even though we have own them for PS4. This was the case for most PS3 games, but PS5 is supposed to run PS4 games and even offer enhanced visuals for those games... That said, yes*, I'll buy ED again for PS5 if required, regardless of whether I own a PSVR at that time or not.

* this assumes Frontier gets their act together and fixes all these bugs that have plagued the PS4 edition; Q4 has me hopeful.

I would, but it's all academic since Sony requires PSVR games to meet certain performance thresholds on regular PS4 and PS4Slim. While a PS4Pro might have acceptable performance, the need to have it working on regular PS4 is the issue. The regular and slim PS4 PSVR version would run great in Elite 1993 mode. :p

My former game dev shoulder angel says don't worry about ED on PSVR for the PS4 generation. Look at being a launch title for PS5 VR. ED could be a great PS5 VR showcase game if they reach out to Sony now and express the desire to do so.

Launch title seems a bit optimistic to me, but yeah, if Elite is still actively developed in 2020, the new PS will definitely have the oomph to run it in VR, and there will be no excuse for Frontier not to port it.
Also, it's very likely that we'll eventually see a second-generation PSVR, which will be an improvement on the relatively blurry experienced offered by the existing PSVR.

Yes as well, but I think we'll have to wait a few years for a PS5 and PSVR 2 for having a chance to do that.

Of course. BUT...I would like to hear from Fdev. Whats the problem? We've been banging on about this for a while and they haven't waded in as yet IIRC. So is this indeed a Sony Hardware / software issue or is it Fdevs engine issue? There are many good PSVR games running complex 'looking' games but are they just optimising their games in a 'smart' way that Fdev can't due to software limitations their end? This argument never goes away and we simply don't know the answer...just idle speculation most of the time. I'd rather Fdev were open and honest and either said - we can do it, it cant be done on the PS4, or said they are looking into it because in theory it CAN be done, they just cant MAKE it be done.

And frankly, if Duck is still having shader issues I mean....imagine that in your face in VR....sheesh.

I played Skyrim for endless hours on PS3, and then again in VR for the few weeks I owned PSVR. Since it was for sale, I grabbed the SE version for my wife while it's on sale. I didn't expect this, but it has sucked me right back in as well.

Here's my point - Skyrim VR was pretty amazing, especially indoors or close to structures. However, the quality of what I was seeing mostly sucked. Between the low resolution of the PSVR itself and the very low LOD of the rendered scenes (especially if any distance was involved), it was sometimes actually worse-looking than PS3. The SE version, on the other hand, looks absolutely amazing for an older game. Sure, many of the models still look wonky, but the scenery is breath-taking.

If I still owned Skyrim VR and also the 2D Special Edition, I have a feeling I would be playing the 2D version most of the time. Now when VR can replicate what I see in 2D, both in resolution and level-of-detail, I might put that helmet on and never come out!

Conclusion - If ED supported PSVR, I would definitely try it, just to get the sense of scale. However, I'd probably do most of my flying in 2D, because visual quality matters too much to me.
