A question for Elite Rank exploerers our there....

So in theory, I could fly to the other side of the Galaxy, land on a very flat high g planet, get into the srv an press a Makro button to let my srv drive in a straight line for days?

You'd run out of fuel if you just left it. Not to mention hull damage which you'd get even on a high G world.

Can any Elite explorer tell me roughly how many systems you had to visit to gain Elite ranking?

Purely a function of calue of data returned, not number of systems...

On my coreward journey, my highest rated system was about 250k. It had a black hole, two neutron stars, and three IIRC white dwarfs, a water world and an Earthlike.
I think it's something like 100m credits of exploration data or something like that to get elite.... (They may have raised the thresholds a bit when they buffed exploration data value back in the day)

Really?? How does that work? Credit per KM ?

Presumably. It scales with distance from Sol - so anyone driving around on the far rim would be increasing their rank a lot. Though - as someone else pointed out - if you're already that far away chances are you don't need the extra rank bonus!

Thanks all for your replies!

I realised it was based on money earned, but just wondered if there was a rough estimate of system visits needed to achieve said earnings.
As some have done it within 3k systems and others 7k, it obviously matters very little In the grand scheme of things lol
I've visited 5300 systems so far and have 7500ly until I get back to the bubble, so I should probably get ready to set of again when I get back ( and I swear I'll remember to buy a detailed surface scanner before I set of this time)...sigh
.
Go +/- 1200~1500ly above the galactic plane and scan a load of neutron stars and black holes. You get 60k a pop doing that.
.
OT: It's very strange that efter being back in the bubble for half a year, I'm getting the urge to head out again. Following the progress of the Distant Worlds Brigade has made me yearn for the Black again.

Not too late to catch up, i'm about to re-fit and rejoin the fleet

Hey, come on in. The darkness is lovely and warm and misses you *waves from Distant Worlds Waypoint 5* ;)

I just got to Elite rank in exploration a week ago.

I haven't scanned that many neutron stars or black holes, maybe 100 or so.

Mine ticked over at somewhere between 150-160m but I was selling around 130m credits worth of data at the time and the game crashed a few times. The crashes meant I never got the elite notification message, so it was all worth it *sarcasm*

11 Weeks played...
DUDE!!!!

You DA MAN!

EDIT: Your ava looks like Bulldog... LOL

Haha, thanks :)

You should see my finger info in some old mud I've been playing... "He was created Tue Nov 12 10:30:09 2002 and he is 5y, 100d, 3h, 3min and 45s old." :) (though I just idle there nowadays which builds up the age)

7702 Systems is was for me, but I got it long before V2.0.
Unsure how much exactly driven km and found Materials with the SRV now contribute - but they do (reportedly quite notable especially in the lower Exploration Ranks).

If you wanna be an explorer the rank is only a nice thing to show off. A true explorer doesnt farm neutron fields. He doesnt deliberately visit every system with an Earth like that is mentioned on the forums.

A true explorer gets distracted, he looks for interesting nebulae, bright stars, and generally wanders off in a general direction with a vague sense of where he wants to go. Thats exploration :p

You'll get elite by just going on journeys slowly and finding interesting things :D

I hit Elite around 8500 systems visited with 25k detailed scans. I had a good mix of detailed exploring and turn-and-burn Fog-horning. Unfortunately, the latter is extremely boring, but yields the highest creds/hr. Would usually only do this if I was in dire need of some pew-pew.

This included every flavor of exploring - Sag A runs, hunting Earth-Likes and terraformables, neutron farming, searching for rare star types, and exploring nebulae.

If someone wants to get to elite rank quickly (or, well, 'quickly' may not be the right term), head to the neutron fields in the direction of Sag A*. That's a perfectly legitimate way of doing so, and many have done so. You don't have to do that, you can go elsewhere and explore, or, if you are really bold, go on a single epic voyage. If you do that latter, make sure to take pictures!

But whatever way you do it, its not so much a question of systems as a question of how much real-life actual time you want to put into playing a video game. I made several long trips to the Perseus and Outer Arms, fairly prosaic trips compared to other explorers, and never got more than a 21 kly from the bubble. It took me several months of real time to do all of this. I did take breaks from Elite to play other games, but in the end I have cracked 1000 hours of total play time.

Getting to elite in exploration is not intrinsically difficult, it just takes a lot of time. It's more a question of patience and persistence than anything else. I found it to be very rewarding once I cracked that barrier, and frankly, I am proud of my accomplishment (as silly as that sounds, its video game after all). It was extremely nerve wracking coming back to the bubble on that last trip to the rim, wondering what would happen if I was interdicted. Very nerve wracking and adrenaline pounding. I had spent two months on that last trip, I wasn't sure I had enough to make elite, but I knew there was a chance I could lose it all in seconds. It was all the excitement anyone can ask for in a game. I'm glad I did it.

But I would never do it again.

It's such a massive time sink. A year ago I was excited about also being able to play No Man's Sky. Now, I'm not so sure.

To actually answer the question, though, the number of systems I visited on my exploratory trips was around 6000.

A true explorer explores anyway they like.
