A Question For VR Gurus

I'm thinking of getting an Oculus Rift S. My current gaming desktop will work fine as it has dedicated DisplayPort outputs on the GTX 1070 GPU.

My problem is that I will be abroad for several months so I'm also looking at buying a gaming laptop to use. The Rift S apparently cannot be used with an HDMI -> DP converter as the DP output needs to come from the GPU direct. I can't for the life of me find any laptops with DP outputs.

Is there any way round this? Oculus themselves say there are no converters on the market that work with the Rift S.

I'll answer my own question. After some digging I've found that the Rift S will work from USB-Type C 3.1 Gen2 to DisplayPort.

Now to find a laptop with a USB-Type C 3.1 Gen2 connector. :(

I've had a Rift S for about a year now and I just pre-ordered the HP Reverb G2. I'm hoping the tracking is better with the HP. The Rift S loses tracking at least once a day where I have to reboot the Oculus application. I wish you luck.

Don't buy a Rift S...not now

I didn't realise HP were bringing this out. It's £200 more than the Rift S but on paper it looks like a better piece of kit.

The Quest might be a better bet, and you get to play it without a computer if you want. I've tested a friend's, and the picture and response is very good. Having said that, I won't touch Oculus now that you need a Facebook account to use their new hardware.

Okay, I'm starting to come down on buying this laptop so my next question is:

Will the Reverb G2 run at full resolution with an RTX 2070 Super (laptop version) graphics card?

I know the laptop card is a cutdown version of the full desktop card but will it match the performance of the minimum stated desktop card which is either GTX 1080 or RTX 2060 Super?
