Newcomer / Intro A question on hellos

Monin' All,
What's the good word?

I've got a n00b question about sending DMs.
While docked at Harma, I went AFK to take care of a couple of things (namely starting a pot of coffee and throwing the soundtrack from the movie "Heavy Metal" on the record player) while running up the clock on my next Kumo pkg and when I returned, I noticed that another Commander had passed through and saluted on their way. Not wanting to be impolite, I tried to send a "Good Morning" of my own in response, however the message wasn't delivered. So I'm wondering, do DMs only work when both players are in the same system?

Thx in Adv
Cannabal

PS CMDR Blaad the Impaler, if you see this, Good Morning! :D

To send a chat message to everyone in the system you have to select the System Channel first. Type "/help" in the chat window to see how to select it. The normal mode for the chat window is Local. In that mode your messages only go to the commanders in your current instance or to one specific commander if you address them explicitly (see /help). You can chat galaxy-wide with commanders who are on your friends list.

Pleased to meet you, Jago!
I might be mistaken, but I thought that I saw an option/prompt to respond to the o7 I rec'd after clicking on the CMDR's name in the chat panel.

Yes, it works for replying, if you're quick or the chat isn't too busy. It could be a lot better though.

/r used to make the comms input be a reply to the commander you received a direct message from - does that not work now?

(/l to return to local)

Evenin' Slick!
I whole-heartedly agree with you, amigo! :)
I can still remember the first time I saw that movie part of it anyways... I was a young teenager who had been sick and slept most of the day away so when I woke up around 3AM (not at all tired for some strange reason) I plodded out to the living room, fired up the TV and started clicking channels thrilled to find a cartoon playing. It ended up being part way through the final story arc of the movie, but I didn't care... I was completed enthralled by the stoic while-haired warrior woman on the screen. I'm not going to lie... I found the movie right at the part where she was getting out of pool, completely naked. That may have been a factor. ;)

It was about a week later that I was able to see the movie in its entirety.
I enjoyed it even more watching it again some years after that, once I was old enough to appreciate the references.

BTW, Do you know where a guy can score some decent Nyborg in these parts?

Let that stuff stay in the 80's, bro. The music lives on. You will find that a large segment of the ED playerbase are veterans of the '84 original, so the references are known by many. I played it as an adult and I'm nowhere near the oldest guy on this forum. 🤘

Hi there Cannabal.
The easy way to send a reply to a DM is to open the comms panel, and and use whatever is assigned as your cursor-up button to select the concerning message. Press "fire" on it and you're all set up to reply.

Other than that, don't worry. Although it is deemed polite behaviour to reply to friendly greetings, while sitting in a station eveybody knows you may or may not see your comms panel, so nobody will take offense when no reply comes in ;)

"84 original" caught my attention... so I did a little research.
I wasn't aware ED had such a history to it. My appreciation for the game and community around it has increased.
I think I'm going to like it here. :D

You can play the original Elite (1984) - it is a free download on the frontierstore.net site - contains the original game, its manual and a BBC B emulator.

Hi Hans!
I never had a C64 m'self, I was a Texas Instruments kid with my TI 99 4/a :)
One thing I'll never forget about that experience was that somehow the N and M keys were reversed on it.

I had the thought a few weeks back that I should pull it out again... until I realized that I no longer have a tape deck to plug it into... unless... could you record the programs as MP3s and use those to save/load programs into memory?

Wow, this has turned into a tangent. :D

Believe it or not, a TI 99-4a was my very first computer. I remember those cartridges holding the games, and if one wanted to program it in anything but BASIC one would have to buy costly extra hardware.

It was a revelation what one could do on the Commodore in comparison. Had a good time with it anyway :)
