Astronomy / Space A real image of planets forming! Genesis in action.

Looking forward to visiting the HL Tau system

I would love to visit this system (or a system like it) in Elite: Dangerous.

This article includes an amazing new image from ALMA of a young star system about 450 light years from earth with a disk of dust and gas still in the process of star and planet formation. I imagine this would be a very dangerous system to visit given the FTL mechanics of Elite. You would have to arrive near the star far enough outside the ecliptic plane to avoid a ship stranding mass lock. But once you arrived safely, you could supercruise around a solar system wide ring system full of gas, dust, asteroids, and newly formed planets. Because of mass lock you would only be able to penetrate into the disk in normal flight mode, but the visuals would be awesome and unlike anything I have so far seen in the Beta. Because the young planets are clearing out gaps in the debris cloud, you could supercruise close to planets and pass from one side of the cloud to the other. The opportunities for mining in a system like this could be really great, perhaps you could even find clouds of minable material suitable for scooping without the need for a mining laser. I think it would also be cool if my ship reacted to flying through gas and dust clouds, things like slower top speed, the sound of many small objects impacting the shields or hull, accumulations of grime on the hull and canopy that requires cleaning. It's fun to imagine all that is possible with the future development of this game.
