A Simple Solution to Combat Logging

Knowing British Consumer Law, you can count on it.

I think its probably inevitable and would be a sensible move for consumer protection rather than any sort of unwarranted imposition. Fall below the acceptable standards of human behaviour and get shunned has been a thing since Ogg the Flatulent was flung out of the cave to fend for himself.

Who's the bigger nutter, the nutter who combat logs, or the nutter that looses his shyte and posts thousands of posts about how much hurt there is in his buttocks because of it?

I'd say its the extreme end of the doxing, death threat sending, swatting, furiously misogynistic types that give all of us gamers such a bad name and make things like block necessary who can be on either side of the debate who are the real issue.

The people who get mad about exploding spaceships or not exploding spaceships are overly cross about video games but very tame in the grand scheme of things.

The fact I can use the systems put in place to control those people to purge boring greifers from the letterbox is a side effect and a bit of a bonus for me.

As always the best solution would be for the player ship to start powering up the hyperdrive which sometimes takes fifteen seconds etc, then when full it jumps. AI equivalent to the Cmdr rank takes control for evasion.

This has two benefits one players can attack the ship secondly it won't break immersion of a ship just vanishing.

Oh most certainly, compared to the real worst humanity has to offer, these folks are pitiable at best, annoying at their worst. Kind of like Ogg.

What is your beef with british consumer law? Are you a salty purveyor of finest chlorinated chicken or somethin? ;)

Hmm... it IS called Peanut Butter. It damned well better contain peanuts.

thousands of posts? On their own? Yeah I hate it when that happens all the time. I miss the old Indigo who at least put some effort into trolling. This is just anaemic

I've never put any effort into trolling, because I have better things to do, no matter what someone might think. Now, poke some fun at things that should be obviously ridiculous, sure, I'll do that, in the hopes that someone might just open their eyes, engage their thinking material, and go "You know, THAT is pretty ridiculous, now that I think about it."

They probably prefer popping the warning on just for the simpletons rather than going through all the hassle of coroners court. Look on the bright side, every time I see the "warning may contain shellfish" label on a packet of prawns I smile.

We didnt have a litigation culture 30 years ago. Now we do. Wonder where that came from. thanks cuz so we gotsta have labels to protect producers from people who aren't really equipped to look after themselves.

Having said that, why do slow learners or people from other cultures with chronic allergies deserve to play russian roulette with processed food? Is it chronic allergies you hate?, people who (for whatever reason) arent familiar with labelling conventions? or just the Dutch ?
Who cares, its a tiny labelling convention that makes life easier when you have one place to look on each product to know for sure the allergy risks.

These events are used & publicised as they are because they are shocking and indefensible. Then these extreme & extremely rare acts are exaggerated & extrapolated to gamers at-large to beat them with a stick, to serve ulterior motives.

like i was saying.. Pretty innocuous as ulterior motives go. Usually its a Social Agenda for Change, or some 'Insert My Politics Into Every Orifice' assault on reason & sanity. Which neatly brings me back around to arguing about peanuts.

Not that rare it happens here fairly regularly, aside from the swatting. Bound to happen when any game sells millions of copies because "people".

There is no culture war going on for anyone not actually in the trenches. Its more of a spectator sport for the most part.

You created a ridiculous strawman who makes thousands of posts about a clog incident, and then pointed out it was ridiculous. Great job in raising awareness buddy. Fundamentally, you're victim-shaming, and should be ashamed  .. oops, i meant 😭

As I think it's been stated many times before, due to the way the game network works we can't always say for sure what's going on when people disconnect. And more importantly we can't actually take control of a player's ship if they disconnect. It's not like a standard client-server farm where the server is the final arbiter and they go, "OK, you disconnected; I'll keep control of your ship." We just can't do that.

Do I really need to say more?
Err... yeah, kinda. I shake my head at the likes of nuts-may-contain-nuts as much as the next fellow, but when such legislation comes in a package alongside cars that are less likely to crush you in the event of a crash, or Christmas lights that won't ignite the tree and burn your house down, my reaction tends towards having a giggle and moving on. I understand other countries adopt more of a caveat emptor attitude towards consumer protection, and some people may find something attractively Darwinian about that, but I rather like my cocoon of regulations. Sometimes niche examples can seem unnecessarily proscriptive but there's generally a good reason for them. Overall I'd sooner have them than not, but I guess it's easy for me to say that having lived for so long with them. Maybe if I was looking from the outside more of them would seem a bit crazy.

Still, give it 18 months and this may all be academic anyway. Bonfire of the regulations. Jagged metal Krusty-Os for all.

The peanuts may contain nuts thing comes from packs of peanuts & nuts often being manufactured in the same factory and cross contamination is possible. For the vast majority of people that slight potential for cross contamination does not matter in the slightest, for those that do it's a life threatening Big Deal.

Like a lot of 'silly' signs they are there for a reason & those that feel it is unnecessary can just ignore them. Most people don't CLog, or don't CLog in a way that significantly affects other players competing against them. But some do, and that's what the (proposed) rule is there to deal with.

I am an opponent of the "Nanny State", supporter of (un)Common Sense over Common Law, favor far, far, far Less government in the lives of people instead of more. I reject the notion of a "genetic right to rule" in favor of "Qualified to Lead". I don't object to Darwinism winning out, in fact, I support it. This isn't to suggest I support anarchy though - some regulations, especially those based entirely on (un)Common Sense, along with Reasonable Standards, are simply necessary. Yes, I fully expect my Peanut butter to contain Peanuts, possibly even nuts, but certainly not Pea (read phonetically, not literally).

Back to CLogging though.. River, there's no (proposed) rule - there is an End User's License Agreement, to which we, the End Users, have Agreed to abide by. No additional layers of rules or regulations are required. The problem is not one of too few rules and regulations, but that the existing ones are enforced, and even moreso, they are not enforced instantly and observably by those who have witnessed, or believe they have witnessed an infraction.

Anything short of an instant, full-screen, server-wide message of "CMDR ThatGuy has been banned for life for Combat Logging against CMDR MahImmushon" is just not going satisfy the loudest of the squeeky wheels around here.

You need to attend a university and study Language Arts and Logic. Your desperate search for this mythical grass-person is pitiable. I highly recommend studying the art and science of the Hyperbole in great detail. You can substitute this with an accounting of the total number of threads on this subject, along with a threads-per-page count. If that number is not at least 1001 I will send you a dollar. If it's greater than that, you can send me three. If you refuse, then you must recant your claim, and swear a Holy Oath to never use terminology from the internet again, or bring down a Generational Curse upon your bloodline for 100 generations.

I also think it is easy to confuse a problem that doesn't affect an individual with one that isn't important to anyone.

This is both important an urgent. FDev have stated they have a solution in place. There are no obvious outward signs of this, however. So it's difficult to say whether it's an effective punishment or not, but it probably is reasonable to say whatever they are doing isn't much of a deterrent. I favour removing the benefit of CLogging, and one of the ways to encourage that is for there to be an obvious deterrent.

"If I CLog I'll have to log back into the mode I left. I learned this when I was accidentally disconnected earlier. Now that I'm faced with the consequences of my poor in-game decisions I know that rage-quitting will only delay rather than avoid this sticky situation I find myself in".

Stuff like that.

players just pull the plug when they realize that they do not have a fair chance to stand the fight against an especially prepared pvp ship. when you encounter one of these you have two options: either you try to fight or you leave your ship alone with the ganker having a nice coffee break or bath awhile. In both cases your ship will get lost. As long as the game is made like this, as long as people feel they have no chance anyway, they will simply pull the plug. not to mention that fighting against a ganker makes you face an endless "chaff, target lost, chaff, chaff, target lost, target lost, chaff, chaff, drive malfunction, fsd not charging eject eject ... which can not be called a nice entertaining fight between two pilots anymore. Get rid of kidding game mechanics and technologies annoyances and players will less likely want to just pull the plug ...

High wake. If I can do it in an e-rated sidey so can anyone else.

A brilliant solution. Except you missed an important part:

I'll log back into the mode I left TOMORROW, after I go do something else for the rest of the day, because no one is so disparate to see my ship go "boom" that they'll sit in the same place for 24 hours waiting.

Can't make progress if you don't log in. The CLogging Griefer isn't sealclubbing, the blockade runner isn't getting to that dock. The player that stays in the game achieves their goal of preventing the CLogger from achieving theirs (for a while).

It makes CLogging part of the game rather than a loophole to avoid the game. Bit like high waking where you escape the immediate threat but have to start your run all over again from system entry.

ETA this has been discussed (years ago now) in my thread in the proposal section.
