I think now that the galaxy is actually dangerous there would be an incentive to have player (or NPC!) escort crafts under your payroll. I wish you could transfer money to other players :<
The pitiful reward they get from being in a wing when you trade in is not near worth enough the hassle. I'd rather pay someone 1mil to escort me a few times back and forth or something. There would be a reputation system where you would know mercenaries that actually do the job versus those who bail it. Could do it over private or open. So much potential.
