A weird encounter, may have been a hack but definatly an expliot if not.....

I get the impression that many of the "cheaters" aren't really doing it to get an edge in the game, but more for the same reason people take apart complex machines to see if they can put them back together again.

i genuinly think there are 2 kind of people.

some, like you say, who just do it to prove themself they can, and some who do it for the $$.

but the issue isn't only at that point, because often those people just use it once or twice, as a POC.

the issue is from the people USING them, they just want an edge, and are even willing to PAY for it...... and ruin legit players experience..

i really hope fdev do something and ban those players

Hopefully, people caught doing this stuff will simply be banned - at least from Open, i fnot totally...
Thats the worst thing FD could do, because it just encourages people to find ways around bans, or ways to avoid detection.

A far better strategy is to force all cheaters into the same instance(s), so they only get to play against other cheaters. That also avoids FD having to deal with false cries of "Why did you ban me, I didn't cheat", since they most likely won't even realise they've been caught (and it's hard to complain about being put into the same instance as other people using the same cheats as you!).

I got taken out in the Tenche system by a Cmdr in a Viper. He was getting his jollies by flying into a space station and then blasting people as they entered or left. He one shot killed me in the back as my Asp was exiting the door, then he flew off out the door with the station blazing away at him. About 10 mins later I was entering the station slot when he came from inside and hit me with one blast of what looked like frag cannon. It took my Asp's shields off completely and hull to 8% as he flew past and out again under heavy fire. I repaired, rearmed and waited for him to try a third time but no luck. If he can one shot kill an Asp and shrug off a space station I have to have suspicions. He's already clearly an [masked swearing redacted - please avoid this thank you] of the largest possible dimensions, its no big leap to imagine he was also cheating.

Bound to happen, cheaters gonna cheat. We'll have to see what FD will do about it.

Don't let a few cheaters ruin the game for you, they would exist even with a better validation system/anti-cheating.

Instead of fleeing to solo, stick to Open, we need legit players to report the cheaters.

Exactly. Chicken out in front of a bunch of m^^ons who dont actually get, that a game is for playing is not the spirit. Besides technical protection, that is indeed a point that needs attention by FD, players should stay alert and report such incidents as frequent as possible. Its a shame that game developers even have to care about such antisocial behavior at all to protect those who like to play a game.
In my opinion, such individuals should be denied access to the game servers completely.

We're being quoted on the cheater's forum! Fame at last. They lurk, so be wary of doing any oblique naming/shaming, or suggesting too much in the way of workarounds. They're smarter than non-cheaters obviously, so will have thought of all the obvious stuff before we even suggest it...

given the game implementation, i'm afraid this is only the start of us seeing that kind of player....

...

don't hold your breathe on that, p2p game so nothing for fdev to see, i'm afraid that this will soon be openbar for them.....

P2P games are notorious for being easy to hack, but this game isn't entirely p2p, there's a fair bit that gets sent to the server.

That said, I haven't heard of a multiplayer game of any significance that hasn't been hacked, regardless of the architecture or protections that are built in. Unfortunately there's a never-ending arms race between cheaters and developers.

I had the weirdest encounter yesterday with a player in a viper

I saw him cruising along with a 14,000 bounty so I pulled him over in my ASP

I see he has 17% hull left and he immdietely starts bad mouthing me about attacking him for a measly 200 credit bounty

I check and he only has 200 now but before the interdiction he had 14,000

"Ok sorry my mistake"
i tell him he's free to go, despite being in my sights I could have easily killed him

I go back to super cruise and I kid you not, 30 seconds later I'm interdicted and guess who it is?

Same guy, 100% hull

He did NOT have time to go to a station and pay his repair bill

He also now has no bounty at all and starts shooting me, I decide it's not worth my time and hit a shield cell

Noise goes off, no effect on my shields recharge

Mg chaff seems to hold him off and just before my shields are about to fail I press shield cell again, nothing, does not work at all and I take some heavy damage

Right, I head back, repair and seek him out

See him again, bounty is now 9000 somehow, I double check it's the right guy, interdict him and he now has no bounty at all, he's clean even from a Warrent scan, and him hit with everything I have, his shields go down but he speeds away and turns to meet me head on

I know what's coming so I hit 4 pips to shields and yeah he rams me head on, there's a massive crash, my shields are down and I have 6% hull and a breached canopy

I hit FSD and look at him, he had no shields before the impact and he still has 100% hull

I limp back to the station blind, dock with 8 seconds to spare

I leave the station and he Interdicts me again.....

I submit, FSD and log off once I'm sure he's not following

I really have no idea what to make of what happened

If anyone wants his name
ill PM it to them

Why not just inform FD and let them look into it?

Actually, this is a very good idea...

*Imagines a world of all A grade Anacondas with unlimited ammo Plasma accelerators, shooting at multicannon speeds, all invincible, circling each other like sharks at Nac beacons, and never being able to kill anyone...

That would actually almost be worth watching for fun.

I hate cheaters, and it saddens me that they have already shown their ugly mugs here. I only hope FD can catch them easily and ban them quickly.

OP here

i meant to reply sooner but work kept me busy

I can't be sure but I think he had 4 Multicannons as a lot of lead was flying past me

The first shield cell I used may have been to weapon fire, but then I hit chaff and he wasn't hitting me the second time I used one (I put it down to lag and that's why I went back)

I was about 2km away when I fired the second shield cell but after the chaff ended he closed the gap and started hammering my unprotected hull

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has experienced it, I thought I was going mad, it's been bugging me all day as I've been trying to figure out reasonable explanations

After a bit of reading and experiencing it myself I can put the log out and log in bug down to his wanted staus

shield cells down to lag (maybe)

The head on impact? I have never seen a ship survive undamaged when his shields were down and hit someone head on, we were both going at full speed and I was sure that he would die

Theres a chance that was also lag, but when he appeared with his hull fully repaired that really made me think something was wrong, I was thinking I must have mixed up the names or something but it was definatly the same guy I interdicted with 17% hull

He even continued to bad mouth me throughout the battle in the same way

I really appreciate offers for groups but I do like the experience of running into random players who you never know what their intentions are

I think I'll stay with open for now and see how bad this kind of behavior gets

This is the beauty of being able to block players and if forced play in group mode

When someone has a Mobius style Group mode, that also has pirates (CMDR ones), I'll consider it...

The risk is part of the fun, though not so much when it's invincible ships.

Out of curiosity, what are they saying about us? :p

Cheaters aren't smart. They're all dumb and lazy, that's why they are cheaters. Their only "achievement" is using a cheating software that someone else wrote. Monkeys can do that. The only ones with at least some brain are the ones writing the softwares, and they usually do it for the challenge of breaking into a program, not because they want to cheat.

When a game reaches a certain level of reputation, some wise-guy will eventually write a hack for it. Lots of sites make money from distributing game hacks, especially when the game is attractive and difficult at the same time, and FD will have to up the security or we will have an army of people in "God-mode" pretty soon.
