Newcomer / Intro A weird thing happened at the station....

Well, I decided to take up mining.
I upgraded my Keelback to a T-10, which left me so short of credits I couldn't pay the insurance.
I went out and mined a planet ring, using the DSS to target some hotspot with a mineral called Alexandrite (I think).
Spent an hour or so mining, didn't get any of the mineral I was in the hotspot of, but made about 300K (noob!).
Jumped to another system, tried to fuel scoop without realising I no longer had one. Fell out of FSD, temp up to 214.
Actually managed to escape in one piece! But when I landed at a Coriolis in system, I find I've only got 316 credits to my name.
Luckily, the system I'm in has some pristine rings, both metal rich and icy, so I may be able to claw it back.

o7 Cmdrs!

Whooops! I'm glad you survived.

You have a cargo of freshly mined ore so can you sell some of that to pay for repairs?
First law of ED is that the more you have to lose, the higher the chance of losing it. Park the T10, sell one of its modules to get some cash. Buy a Sidewinder, then go and scan a few nearby systems to get enough cash to buy back the module you sold and for the T10's insurance.

If you fall into a star of drop out of supercruise close to one, switch off every module except the things you need to get back into supercruise. That will stop your ship burning when you charge your FSD.

If you're mining in a T10, do not fit any weapons unless you have it properly outfitted for combat, ideally with engineering. All fighting pirates does is waste time and put you at risk of losing everything. Plus, fitting weapons and everything else you need to use them adds mass to your ship, which slows it down and reduces jump range.

Alexandrite, iirc, is a core mining resource. As such, you'll need more tools than just lasers...

... just in case you weren't aware ;)

OK, thanks. That would explain a lot. Does this mean that all hotspots that show up with a DSS are core elements?
I've been to quite a few now (Platinium, Void Crystal & Cold Diamonds [?], to name a few), but only seem to get Galite, Uranite, Lepi-whatsit and Bertrandium.
Still not sure about the Abrasive Lasers, the normal mining lasers seem to work better.

Hotspots can be of anything, not just core stuff.

Abrasion Blaster is for displacing surface deposits - completely different to mining lasers.

Platinum you can laser mine, Void Opals you can't, Low Temperature Diamonds go both ways, the others you mention are all laser mineable.

Very lucky. There have been many similar threads which ended in tears. Please learn from your mistakes even though you didn’t really have major consequences. Lots of good advice above

Don’t fly without rebuy.

Do some homework to learn to ensure you don’t run out of fuel and become stranded. If you do, call the Fuel Rats, but you should take responsibility for your own fuel management. And until you know what you are doing, I don’t think you should fly around without a fuel scoop.

Anyway glad you didn’t have worse circumstances.
