Abandonware

Once this game has completed its orbital decay around the drain and makes the inevitable full transition to abandonware, will we be able to play it as a standalone game, or will the game disk just become part of a new game called Coffee Coaster?

Thx.

Braben has always said that it will be handed over to the community. I don't think that's realistic as the servers as far as I know are many, and the BGS is TB of data. No one is hosting this anytime soon. When Elite has the servers switched off, that's it. However, FD are doing well, so that will only happen when there are so few players as to make it an easy choice. But it will be sad that we can't play it forever. Modern gaming, really. Built on sand.

Sir Braben Lord God of Elite, has always said it will be open source. and by then i will be able to host it on a spare old i101 GTX 9798 30000kTB laptop
Don't see an issue personally

I don't see why this should be locked, this is a legit question. But AFAIK, the game is unplayable without the Servers of Frontier, so whenever the Support for the game Ends (see: ten year plan :p) you will have to find another game like this. Which Frontier will of course have finished developping by then :D

I'd imagine keeping the servers up and going shouldn't be very expensive. However, before the plug is pulled on those, it'll be the fact no one is being paid to do all the background work like CGs, Galnet stories etc etc?

But I can't imagine all that happening anytime soon...

I don't intend to abandon it lol.

I don't either

I have a lot of server power online right now and a fiber optic gigabit pipe. I also add new servers as the technology improves. I might not be able to support the entire current player base, but I bet I can get a decent game server up to have an active presence.

Don't see it going away anytime soon but I can imagine it modded and local and lots of private servers with different themes in the future.

This game open to the modding scene would finally mean some decent content!
"The modding scene" would at this point better resort to making games from scratch instead of relying on benevolent or apathetic "suppliers" and then going all teary-eyed when the platform they don't control doesn't cooperate. The expectation that a game studio makes a platform for them to play with is fairly arrogant.
