Ability to build space empires?

I just learned about this wonderful, visually stunning game and have been reading up on it. You can mine, trade, pirate, bounty hunt and explore. But can you and your friends claim a section of space and claim it as your own? Can you build starbases? Fleets and defenses? Bring in colonists or cause a planet to be terraformed?

In short, can you have any great influence?

Tes, No , Yes, and No

You can do what you want. This is not EVE online where you can do all that, but this is better as players are always here to help

The problem is, that it'll require a ton of people to get anything done, so the individual's efforts will go largely unnoticed.

I'm sure that's just down to some coefficient somewhere, pretty easy for Frontier to tweak if need be if it's not dynamic enough.

This kind of player influence sounds like fun too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uKD1ap5hsI
I wonder if it would be possible, for instance, for a group of like-minded anarchists to occupy a cluster of anarchic systems and, say, influence their independent infrastructure development, protecting them from imperial expansion, etc...
