About to jump into the VR world .. simple question.

Okay, are you using a USB port tied directly to the motherboard? If so, it might not be getting enough juice to do the job. I had to buy a USB 3.0 card for one of my empty slots, one that actually gets powered separately. That cleared it up for me.

I thought that might be it .. I have already ordered a usb 3 card .. fingers crossed it's that ... here's hoping :) cheers for the info.

Ok so after messing around for hours, I have gotten nowhere. the headset apears to be fully recognised in device manager but i'm being told i'm plugged into an incompatable USB controler. any ideas (i have looked into this and already tried a few things out I could find).

still very happy with my purchase BTW :)

I'm a VR noob so others will be of more help....BUT, are you plugged in to USB 2 or 3? I have to have my Samsung hooked in to a USB 3 port.

On an even less helpful note. I'm another SRV lover in VR. I found scuttling about in it quite dull and restricted on my monitor and avoided surface prospecting as much as possible but in VR I can drive around for hours exploring and am even thinking of doing a planetary circumnavigation in VR.

Luniticisi - stick with it and keep checking back here, someone will be along who knows their stuff and get you up and running

yeah, I'm not worried .. it'll work eventually .. also yes I have it plugged into my USB 3 slot, it recognises if I plug it into a USB 2 slot. it tells me I have done so. so it must be the onboard USB issue.

From what you said it's likely the USB and the part you bought will fix it.
If you haven't already seen it this post is helpful for the next stages.

I had issues with no sound to my headset, I fixed that by updating ASMedia USB 3.0 drivers in Device Manager, perhaps that might fix it for you.

Go To Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers (last one in the list).
Expand, If ASMedia USB 3.0 drivers is installed > Select update drivers from the web.
If the latest version is already installed uninstall and restart pc, repeat above procedure.

It might fix the issue, It certainly fixed my sound issues Rift CV1.
MSI Krait Z270 Motherboard. ASMedia USB drivers is also available from the motherboard OEM

Only thing I can think of if the usb slot is a blue usb 3 is the bios maybe has some sort of compatibility mode switched on that is making it effectively a usb 2? But the card should sort it.

Also some cases might have usb3 slots but older motherboards might not have a 3.0 19-pin connector on the board to run usb 3 to the case slots, so a converter has been used converting it to usb 2 so the slots are useable.

Luniticisi you're not having much luck m8 :(

Mine was ridiculously straighforward.....literally plug & play

Been having some issues with bluetooth headphones AND the controllers (I know....it aint supposedly allowed) but got it working now (not sure what I did!)

Don't get disheartened!

Still waiting on the USB3 card, but my deliveries are usually pretty sound, so I expect it today. must say, I am still good, still excited. (also, I won't be using the controllers with elite so haven't YET bothered with the bluetooth)

Nor me, just need 'em to select certain 'show off' demos in the portal to friends and family :)

You got Dr. Kaii's ED Profiler set up for your first foray? It's important to reserve judgment and tweak and tweak till it's optimised (I could care less about the odd stutter or glitch....visual fidelity is where it's at for me)

Once I get the thing working, that's when I'll delve deep into the depths of optimisation :)

Absolute cheapest are the Acer and Lenovo WMR headsets. Downsides are they use an LCD screen (colors not as nice, worse black levels), and they have a fixed IPD of 63mm (interpupillary distance, basically how far apart the lenses are so they are centered on your pupils). The IPD thing may be an issue for clarity if yours is much larger than this.

One step in price above that, your options are Rift and Vive. Advantages of those headsets is better tracking (WMR headsets use inside out tracking where the sensor cameras are in the headset rather in sensors you attach around your room) for roomscale stuff, but that isn't very relevant for sit-down games like ED. Another advantage is they use OLED screens, which provide better color and black levels. IPD is also adjustable. One down-side compared to WMR headsets, however, is that they use lower resolution screens (even compared to the Acer and Lenovo ones!). So it's a trade-off here between resolution and color levels.

There's also the higher end WMR headsets the Samsung Odyssey and Odyssey+. Probably the best commercial headset for Elite right now if you can swing it. Has OLED panels, adjustable IPD, and higher resolution than the Rift or Vive. The + version has an anti-screen door effect filter which apparently really reduces SDE.

Those are pretty much your main options. Keep in mind one factor I haven't discussed is comfort, and this is quite individual. Some people find one headset comfortable, while others do not.

I HAVE the Acer and it's excellent. AND the IPD is adjustable within the Windows 10 Mixed Reality settings and works very well, I have had no issues. I can't imagine playing this game any other way now.

IMO it depends on your budget and what rig you have. The rift tends to be quite forgiving and is still a solid choice for so many reasons. If you plan to game outside of ED in VR I’d go for that.

Haven’t personally tried the cheaper windows headsets but people have good things to say about them - fixed IPD on some is a drawback though. If they are anything like the odyssey then they are better for ED simply because of the screens.

Welcome to the VR club whatever you choose!

IPD is adjustable within the Windows 10 Mixed Reality settings. Works perfectly.

Also, there are some resolution/Hz adjustments you can make in the WMR settings. BUT, the biggest bang for your buck in optimizing any WMR headset comes if you are using SteamVR. There are settings there that will let you really push the headset in term os resolution. I had not messed with this for a long time and then followed someone's guide on it. WOW, it stepped up the visuals.

OP, Have you considered a pre-owned Rift? PM me if you are interested as i am in the market to replace my rift. Nowt wrong with it and it works 100%

Cheers for the offer, but I am very happy with my Lenovo Explorer. It's pretty awesome, even on my bare minimum system!

Software and hardware IPD adjustment are not the same thing. I can guarantee that someone with a 73 ipd is not gonna have a great experience with a 63 ipd headset, because no matter how much you adjust software IPD, their pupils will be way off the center of the lenses, which is critical for a good image on fresnel lenses.

My IPD is 71, I use a Lenovo Explorer (obviously with software IPD adjustment), I set the IPD to 71 by typing it into the adjustment box in WMR portal.....very good image and text clarity.

Luniticisi - you have reneged on your promise to update us on how you get on! How's it going?

It's going really well, everything is working better than I thought it would. haven't done too much in the settings as I don't want to push my luck as my system is just scraping the bottom of the barrel for VR.

Really loving it ..
