About wasting our precious time

It is hard for me to comprehend that everytime something new is added to ED that make the game world and the experience richer, there are players thinking this is a waste of time, my routine now takes 2.5 seconds more time to earn x amount of credits/reputation/whatever! And other times even these same players moan about game being boring and shallow.

I mean, games ARE a waste of time to be frank. There is no real reason to make credits fast. There is no real reason to get best ships fast. There is no real reason to spend any time for anything in game... but to enjoy, be entertained and maybe forget real world and stress for a moment.

For example, walking to a mission giver and interacting is more engaging gameplay than selecting mission from text list, no?
If time and being fast is everything and immersion and atmosphere is nothing, where do we need beautiful graphics or ship models or any visuals?

Lets make all interactions and menus text-based, remove all non mandatory gameplay including boring travelling, landing etc. Visually let's reduce everything to bare minimum so gameplay is clutterfree, lean and fast displaying only what you need to see to accomplish your goals. Planets could be round circles, weapon lasers white lines, enemies just triangles visualising direction of movement, docking port just a rotating rectangle... Hm...

I am glad someone has already decided for me what is a waste of time and what isn't.

Watching <insert soap of your choice> is a waste of time - I would get the storyline if they compressed it down to 3 minutes - but for some reason some people want to waste their life watching the whole time consuming episode. I've got much better things to do with my life like exploring every nook and cranny of the latest updates of whatever space sim alpha release is out this month - but I'm just weird like that ;)

People enjoy playing this game for different reasons.
  • Some people have no problem with the material grind, and flying from HGE to HGE. Some people hate doing this.
  • Some people don't mind flying from system to system to check what the best prices are for the goods they want to trade. Some people would rather use 3rd party tools.
  • Some people enjoy exploration, and everything else to get them the best exploration ship is a grind.
  • Some people just want to pvp
  • etc.
The thing about making a game with freedom of choice and a variety of gameplay options, is that sometimes people will be bound to collide on their preferences and what they see as "boring gameplay". It's just a side effect of ED.

Sure, people can stop complaining (or be less annoying) about the grind and having to do X, Y, Z, to do/get something. But if doing X, Y, Z (even if it's immersive/graphically awesome) prevents them from enjoying the game in a way they want to enjoy it, can you really fault them?

Navigare Necesse Est, well, in some ways, yes. Best parts loose their charm if you are high all the time. Major part of the good, memorable experience is preparing for what ever you are planning to do, getting excited about it!

Edit. To pace the action, if you will.
