Absolute new questions...

I searched for a bit to find some sort of answers to my initial set of questions. Found some, didn't find some. So figured I'd start yet another thread with questions I'm sure have been answered before but could use some dusting off:

  1. The "Standard Beta" Availability note says "Coming 2014". Okay...I can live with that. Does this mean there stands a posibility that fully released game may not come till sometime in 2015? Or has Frontier said somewhere that the game will be released in 2014?
  2. If there is no monthly fee, how are the servers being paid for? Micro-transactions? Please tell me there is no "pay to win" feature.
  3. Multiple monitors. Will the game support it? I'm not talking spreading the main screen out to 2 or 3 monitors. I'm talking about 1 monitor can be the cockpit, another can be something else.
  4. Will there be a "safe zone" for those of us that choose NOT to play PVP? A pvp mode much like Star Trek: The Old Republic? (you have to manually go into pvp mode.)
  5. This is a rather odd question but would be interesting to know the answer to this. The game developers boast a galaxy of over 400 billion star systems. IMPRESSIVE!! How are 400 billion star systems named?
  6. Will there be an in game option for talking to a group via headsets or do we rely on TeamSpeak?
  7. Storyline. Will there be one? Or just a "sandbox" gameplay?

I think that's it, for now. Very much look forward to playing here very soon!

1. Standard beta is coming 29th of July.
2. I hope not
3. Yes
4. SP
5. Known ones are named correctly unknown ones computer generated
6. Yes
7. Sandbox only

Sorry, but I cannot see any new questions here. Is it that difficult to read a little about the game?

New questions for me and I'm sure others as well.

As for reading a little. Sure, I can do that. Thanks for your help, Aleksej. :D

Anyone else care to be kind enough to offer any constructive assistance?

Thank you.

  1. They aim to release fully end of 2014, of course things can slip but that is what the intention is. Standard Beta is July 29th.

[*]If there is no monthly fee, how are the servers being paid for? Micro-transactions? Please tell me there is no "pay to win" feature.

There is no pay to win feature.

[*]Multiple monitors. Will the game support it? I'm not talking spreading the main screen out to 2 or 3 monitors. I'm talking about 1 monitor can be the cockpit, another can be something else.

Not sure on this I would guess so. If you mean something like having the cockpit as the main screen and and web browsing on another that is already in. If you mean main screen as cockpit and say, galaxy map on another? I'm not sure.

[*]Will there be a "safe zone" for those of us that choose NOT to play PVP? A pvp mode much like Star Trek: The Old Republic? (you have to manually go into pvp mode.)

Thankfully, no, and long may that continue. Although there will be single player mode, group mode and "safer" areas of space with police support around stations for example, it's a Dangerous place, and the NPC will try and kill you more than players.

[*]This is a rather odd question but would be interesting to know the answer to this. The game developers boast a galaxy of over 400 billion star systems. IMPRESSIVE!! How are 400 billion star systems named?

They are procedurally generated along with some manual intervention.

[*]Will there be an in game option for talking to a group via headsets or do we rely on TeamSpeak?
Not sure yet, but either way is fine.

[*]Storyline. Will there be one? Or just a "sandbox" gameplay?

You make your own story in Elite, but there will be loads to do and events.

I think that's it, for now. Very much look forward to playing here very soon!

Hope that helped see you in game.

Thanks, DraigUK. Your reply was very helpful and appreciated.

In continuing on with these standard new questions (for me)...

DLC. If there is no storylline (which is fine by me), what will the new DLC potentially contain? New hardware I'd imagine? I can't imagine expanding on 400 billion star systems!

From today's newsletter....
We do intend to release small, free updates after launch, but expansions that include significant new features and content will be charged for separately. For example, our current roadmap is to add (in no particular order):
Landing/ driving / prospecting on airless rocky planets, moons & asteroids
Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports
Accessing richly detailed planetary surfaces
Availability of giant ‘executive control’ ships to players

DLC is going to be tricky, it will be stuff like landing on planets, I heard you can hunt alien wildlife, walk about. Who knows what else.

I'm just wondering how they are going to design it where as some people who dont have the DLC are locked out of certain parts of the game.

If its not pay to win then having no DLC should not be a disadvantage to those that do.

By the sounds of what was mentioned, you just won't be able to land on planets, drive stuff, hunt stuff, etc. You simply wouldn't have that capability.

I'd also imagine that based on how far into the game' life they release this DLC, you will have already established yourself as a trader, miner, bounty hunter, etc and will be looking to expand your horizons.

Well played!

Some DLC stuff will be free, essential stuff. and I guess that answers your 'how will they pay for the servers' question. A constant stream of dlc.

Its peer to peer too so I think that makes it alot cheaper.

I wonder if there has been thought about cosmetic items to help subsidize the cost of the servers. Items such as ship decals, ship skins, etc. These in no way hamper gameplay, only offer more eyecandy. Heh...if anything it would be a slight distraction as someone stops to admire your new ship' decals all the while you are readying your weapons to fire on the onlooker! :D

I know Guild Wars 2 is a free to play, played it a while. Basically after paying for the game, I never sunk another penny into the game. I still don't know how they are paying to keep the servers & network up & running.

No safezone sadly which is a great pity but there will be areas which will be heavily patrolled so in essences "safer" zones :)

As long as you cant buy money I'm happy with whatever.

Spray paints, little bobble heads, hair styles, or helmets. Cosmetic stuff.

People out there will pay a fortune for stuff like that. And if it pays the devs bills then I think they earned it.

Usually there is a mix of the features being in your game just that you can't use them (like flight sims where paid for aircraft are in your game as AI's but you can't fly them unless you pay for them) and paid for content being in new 'maps', (eg in this case zones where you can explore planets etc and you have to pay to unlock them)

1: Gamma release will be this year (full game to everyone that has pre-ordered) but full retail might slip to 2015 if a game breaking issue is found.

2: The way the multiplayer has been written to work peer-to-peer there is only need to run a small number or linked server so the running costs will be a lot lower than other networked games and the need to make charge via "pay to win" features won't be needed.

3: The answer to that is No without a change to the basic idea behind the game. Your monitor is your eyes view on to the Elite universe. Be it a single monitor a group of three or the Oculus Rift. The current engine output as far as we have seen it hasn't been set out to allow UI elements to be moved to different screens.

4: There will be no such things as SAVE ZONES even the capital systems could fall to attack, but think of the core worlds being like the U.S. and then the places like the solar system would be New York. Lots of police and a big army to protect it and for the millions that life there it will be a safe place, but that won't mean there will be no crime.

5: A lot of the closer mapped star system will be named using current star charts. For the other 399 billion they will most likely use a system based on location. Otherwise it might be hard to find a system just by a catalog number.

6: Yes both a voice comms system and text should find it way in to the code before the end of the beta.

7: There won't be a storyline to follow this isnt Mass Effect. But you will be living in a real universe with a history and events will happen all around you.
It will be up to you what part you play in making or changing that history.

You could become famous or infamous, or you could change the universe in a way no one could think of and be forgotten.

Or you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife and you may ask yourself, "Well... how did I get here?"
